its interesitng how this "scene"/era (and i mean the more neon/power pop side of scene music) is pretty much not codified or spoken on outside of your channel but will inevitably have some big comeback in 10 years when the next generation finds out about it

The Maine is one of the few bands that did the “country-adjacent” thing right. Black & White’s country beats weren’t jarring. It all blended together really well. I haven’t heard anything new since American Candy though so I’m not sure if they kept that vibe, but John’s voice is really suited for it
@dominicsavankham07099 ай бұрын
Their newest self titled is more dance like. John doesn't really have a country vibe or voice in any of their recent work. Everything from American Candy onwards is gold!

I always loved the rainy day sessions EP they did with Larkin Poe in 2010 which I guess was like part of their descent into country after on your side came out. The songs they picked really leant themselves well to that like slow, harmony-focused kind of style though and Larkin Poe have always been brilliant, I wonder if maybe that partly inspired the vision of the next album but who knows! I'd be interested to know how that record came about anyway

Summer '07 EP is still slept on IMO; "Baby We're Invincible" and "Are You Catching My Drift Yet?" live rent free in my head to this day. Still remember downloading it off PureVolume. I don't think the pop-country pivot was *that* strange, looking at what started blowing up in the early 2010s, with the rise of "Indie" bands like Mumford and Sons that drew on the hipster-meets-Nashville aesthetic. Boys Like Girls and Quietdrive tried the roots/folky stuff on their last couple albums in the 2012/2014 era, and Every Avenue was headed down the same path (if the lead singer hadn't gone to prison). Heck, how many emo/scene kids grew into the hipsters of the 2010s? I do think a lot of the bands that took that path were chasing trends to some degree and that's never a good sign. It seems like Beach Weather is embracing the lo-fi, heavily produced/distorted vocals vibe of early ARRTM and maybe that's where Nick Santino always wanted to be.
@paow105 ай бұрын
After reading your comment, I'm checking Nick's new band. I recently rediscovered Your Best Idea and remembered why I was obsessed with that album. I always preferred ARTTM when it was a solo project.
