So interesting the glove question. My mother is Jamaican and old school. She passed a few months ago and in her case with her documents I found a pair of lace gloves she wore on her trip to settle in the Uk 🇬🇧 in 1960. It was very traditional in n the 50s and 60s to dress in your best for a journey like this. It’s amazing looking a photos of all the black ladies arriving by air and sea dresses amazingly to their mother country. It was obvious she wanted to be buried in them she looked amazing dressed for a journey again. I did her hair and makeup myself for her casket she was 89. Be interesting to see if it still happens with the younger generation. Not really so here in the Uk.

That was really horrific! Several years ago in the community I lived in at the time, a man poured gasoline over his whole body, and then lit a match. I worked in Emergency Room Registration at the time, and by the time the Fire Engine got there with him, (they just had their EMT’s working on him on the back of the engine, if I remember right, because he was burned so badly, he was burned eying recognition, the only reason we knew it was a man, was because he did it in a public park. Luckily, there was a Fire Station right next to the park. He died a few hours later in the trauma room. I will NEVER forget that smell, although since it’s been almost 20 years, I can’t describe it anymore, but if I ever come across burning flesh again, God forbid, I will absolutely hlose it, and probably suffer a bout of PTSD.

They could not keep her eyes closed we laughed that she wanted to see what we were doing as we did her hair and makeup. I still grieve for her. We had a funeral Service and opened casket before the service and the closed during the service. Can I ask why was her face covered before the casket was closed. I have always wondered. I am in the funeral service, hailing from Barbados and one of the reasons persons use gloves - especially in many black/Caribbean funeral homes - is as you suggested, tradition - a very European and Judeo-Christian tradition. The funeral - though occurring a while after death - is seen as the symbolic and ceremonial event representing the Holy matrimony of the Spirit - which has existed in its mortal prison - with the Father/God, and thus the final disposition of their mortal remains. The verse goes (2 Cor. 5:8), "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord" and thus the deceased is usually dressed as if attending a wedding - "the Wedding of Heaven" - in the most formal wear; traditionally all white for ladies (like at their confirmation/baptism) and men in formal black and white, with gloves, hats, and the like. Funeral directors alike, also wear their finest. You will still see Funeral directors wearing what is termed as "morning dress", which is a long grey pinstriped pants, with waist coat, pocket watch, tie & matching pocket square, cuff links, formal socks and dress shoes; with the iconic "scissor tail" (usually incorrectly called a "swivel" tail coat - as some persons pronounce scissor as " siz-zuh" and hence the confusion). For Official and State Funeral, you will also see the traditional top hat, gloves, and walking cane/umbrella carried by funeral directors. I am not sure when this dress officially started but I'd say for a few hundred years this has been the case. Gloves do also - naturally - serve a more functional rather than aesthetic purpose and that is to cover the hands from unwanted less-than-optimal marks or colorations being shown. Even how the deceased is transported in the casket to and from churches or buildings, to the committal of the body, it all is shrouded in ritual and symbolic practices which aid with the visual and the overall dignity and formality - and to a great degree - the mystical/spiritual understanding of death and all that surrounds it. The mortician - and by extension - funeral home, is tasked with the final disposition of an individuals earthly remains - that will never be seen on earth again - and many take this responsibility very seriously and execute it with the utmost dignity.

It was the 1700 hundreds where white gloves were given to pallbearers. They were a symbol of purity and considered a symbol of respect and honor. White gloves were also warn also by some funeral directors to set apart the pallbearers from the families. Other wise white gloves are used to cover decomposing hands. My Uncle passed away, in June 2020. My Mom was 91 at the time, and my Aunt was 77. They decided that it wasn’t safe for them to go down to the funeral, which was 3 hrs. away. He had 6 children, many grandchildren, and “oodles” of great grand children. They knew there would be NO SOCIAL DISTANCING! They were wise NOT to go, (it was a LDS FUNERAL) They made the right decision, because, with all said children, grands and greats, there were over 150 people, (family members were in attendance only) the chapel was completely filled! This was at the beginning of the COVID scare. And my Mom and Aunt were obviously elderly, and at high risk. We still believe that this should have been kept to children and his spouse only. What is the cost to be cremated? Is the body handled the same as for a funeral ?
@KaritheMortician3 жыл бұрын
It depends on the funeral home. It is a $5000 range and depends on the type of services you want to do.

When my mother was laid to rest I noticed her hands decayed faster than the body I was very disturbed about this I wasn't happy how she was presented but I was a child and I had to stay in the child's place!!!!!

My friend died from cancer at 51 in July. During the viewing I noticed her arm was dark gray. Should she have been turning that color so soon after death?
@KaritheMortician3 жыл бұрын
It could have been shadowing or reaction to the fluids

My grandma donated her body to a medical school 20 years ago & I had nothing to show my work..they gave me such a hard time 😡
@KaritheMortician3 жыл бұрын
If there was not a service how much time did you take off? Usually they give you time for a funeral.
@karenjewell65433 жыл бұрын
@@KaritheMortician we had a "memorial "lunch,but not a funeral home..because no body no ashes,why pay them? I work for a large corporation that requires paperwork..we had nothing..gma went to u of michigan medical program... thank God I had a boss that went over and above.. I ended up getting the time off but it's the last kind of stuff you want to have to deal with at that time.. hopefully the donation program issues something these days it was 20 years ago

On a similar note, why do we put glasses on dead people?
@lorraineclement72793 жыл бұрын
Hi Kari, do you tell the person you are working on, what you are doing? I know they are dead but I was just curious.
