This is so important for any business owner. I'm a therapist and it always amazes me how many don't realize or know what they can and cannot do with taxes, nor all the rules that can provide some creative opportunities! My parents' treated their pets as corporate mascots for their midsize business and anything related to their care (including food and vet bills) was a tax right off! How many youtuber creators have pets they regularly include in their content that could be used as a corporate mascot?

😭 my accountant said anything i used had to be a % of personal and % of business, can't be 100% business because i "consumed" it. like if i had a smoothie or travelled, and posted about it... only a % of that can be biz expense. is that true (in canada)
@BenStimpsonAuthor7 күн бұрын
@@vegantechnomad mhm, there's definitely nuances! each country have their own small rules and loopholes. I work as a therapist in my regular, non-author life and we're allowed up here to claim a percentage of our home expenses if we have an office, but we have to justify it if we get audited. and with food it's tricky because it depends again... buying yourself lunch isn't a business expense if you're a sole propriater, but buying a client lunch (which falls under advertising) or buying your team lunch (which falls under office supplies) is a write off. If you go on a trip thats essential for work like if you go to KZbinCon2025 or something like that you could claim the expenses of travel if it's essential for your business to be there, but if you're going just to attend you can't. What you could claim though is the ticket price you pay to attend that event, so this is where like trainings and courses and paying for events you cover will be classed as a business expense. Say you do theatre content creation and attend a play or production and get to go back stage to interview some of the staff, the ticket price for you to go there would be a write off. This is true if you were a writer or journalist. This is where the food piece becomes tricky because if your primary channel was food reviews and you buy yourself a smoothie for a review about it, you can claim that smoothie or meal because if audited you can turn around and say 'this food is essential for my business as a food reviewer'... definitely a lot of nuances.

Appreciate your continued dedication to helping average folks try to build wealth and not get rekt in the process, I love your confidence so keep shrugging off the naysayers. Your experience is clear and I look forward to your pragmatic and bullish viewpoints in a world that’s increasingly easy to get caught up in the constant negativity and bearish sentiment.... Long & short-term trading is generally safer, allowing investors to weather market volatility. I have managed to grow a nest egg of around 100k to a decent 432k in the space of a few months... It’s very important to make sure you are taking all the deductions you are entitled to as well. Studio space in your home (rent/mortgage), utilities, and more. This is where some financial help is worth the investment (also tax deductible). For many starting Creators, profit takes some time to achieve if you really consider what expenses are legitimately involved in creating your content.

Katie, just to let you know, I watched to the end of the video. So worth it. Great info on taxes, setting up a business. Even if we don’t think of ourselves as a business, we still have to pay taxes. I have a question. KZbin takes about 26% in taxes from my YT income. I assume I still need to put money aside for Canadian Taxes, right? So, as a KZbin creator, my income is taxed on the US side and Canada. This almost makes it seem hardly worth it. Am I right? Taxed on both ends?
@katie13 күн бұрын
hey Sue! thanks for watching to the end 🤗 so as a Canadian you shouldn't have KZbin withholding taxes, (I actually just learned about this last year!) you need to fill out a form within your adsense account to let them know where you're based, and because of the tax treaty that Canada has with the US, they shouldn't withhold any - take a look here! support.google.com/youtube/answer/10390801?hl=en

Would you recommend creating an LLC from the beginning, or waiting until your content creation is actually making good money? Also, would you name the LLC with your personal name (if your channels use your personal name), or some totally different business name?
@katie13 күн бұрын
so in Canada we don't have LLCs so I can't speak to that directly, but in Canada at least, it makes the most sense to remain a sole proprietor until you're profiting about $100k/year, then it makes sense to register your business as a corporation (similar to LLC) but I don't know if that's the case in the US!

Get a tax account/attorney….. relatively inexpensive & completely worth it- especially when setting up & structuring your business 🙌🏽 This video is “informative” in an “overview” sort of way….. but by no means anything you should use as a instruction manual for setting up a business in the United States and/or IRS tax specifics. Lots of good concepts & “food for thought” here….. which I believe was the intention of the creator 😊

I always appreciate how you bring the "magical thinking" of how this all works and really ground it. I remember working for small businesses, decades ago, surprised about the quarterly taxes and such. I was lucky to have a couple of mentors guide me in the ways of running an LLC during that time as well. I was wondering if you were going to suggest the straight "take 30% and set aside for taxes"-because that really helps focus on "investing in the company and the infrastructure" perspective. I didn't realize it would be 30% on the profit-just something that makes a big difference, rather than 30% off of the revenue-which can feel daunting. Thank you for your topics and wishing to see others to succeed!

Thank you for being so open about how you go about with your income. I haven't quite started making money, but what I AM going to do is set up an excel sheet/workbook in which I track all my expenses and incomes (from the future income streams) and have it automatically calculate what is for taxes (set that aside of course), what is "free profit"(for small companies here in the Netherlands we can deducted a part of our net profit BEFORE taxes) and all of that. I hope that will give me enough insight and thus make it possible for me to pay everything I need to pay :) I WILL let an accountant check the set up to make sure I don't get into issues 😁 I hope in the future it can help me live my life as a full time author 😃

Exactly, so many people mistake revenue with profit and take home amount which are totally different things. Because there are expenses and there would be future expenses However, its always great to focus on increasing your overall revenue (whilst keeping your expenses in check) as that way you can look towards a better profit And for me, it would be looking out for more income streams
