. MY STORE: waddaplayagolf... for the super adhesive stick-on patches on my hat, like a BAUS.
NORTH HILL GOLF CLUB IN CHIANG MAI: www.northhillch...
I spent 5 days with Pro Mo and his family.
It changed my whole life.
I didn't even want to play golf as much after 5 weeks off. I had some pain in my trap and lat and lower back muscles from editing videos, playing and neglecting my body. I have tried to grow this channel and the movement a lot this year. After 5 weeks off, I wondered why I didn't feel like playing.
Then i played with Mo and Bo. Bo really turned on my feeling to play again watching how SIMPLY and RELAXED she went about tearing up the course FROM THE SAME TEES.
The week with Mo also gave me some insight into how he thinks and how he tries to get his game to the next level. The mental game si so huge, I didn't even realize HOW HUGE.
He wants to simplify everything and he pointed out that I looked like I had WAY TO MANY THOUGHTS speeding through my head like cars on a highway. It was true. He mentioned how he is in pursuit of a totally quiet mind so he can just swing and hit the ball wher ehe wants it to go.
The mind must get OUT OF THE WAY. The first 6 holes in this video, that was not happening. My mind was very much in the way. Some typical thoughts in those first few holes:
1. I must film two people, this will be tough
2. Where must I go after this shot, where is Bo's ball?
3. I can't believe I missed my flight on early Monday morning
4. Caddie don't tell me there is water or OB anywhere just point me in the direction of the fairway
5. Why did I go to the range, all I did was smash.
Multiply that by 100 and you have how many thoughts were clogging my mind. Then I listened to Mo and I realized I was playing golf in my favorite city, with my new favorite golfer, and his awesome sister and it wasn't that hot, there was beautiful scenery and I COULD BE UNDER THE THUMB OF SOME SHITTY LUMBERGH!
It suddenly just changed. Total relaxation. More humor, more fun. This video series in Chiang Mai will be my "Dark Period" as I was not in a good state of mind. I enjoyed every second with Mo, and in Chiang Mai, but for reasons I will explain in a video in a couple days, the course was less attractive to me.
On one hand that happened, and on the other, I started seeing golf as it is supposed to be seen. It's a game. It's for fun. The main purpose I play is for fun and socializing so if that's you too...then I hope you also are as lucky as me to find great golfing friends who keep it fun and keep it light hearted. Mo and Bo do this. Didi and The White Fox do this. Steve does this. Rahat, Tiha, Liam, Matt Penkoks all the playas from the channel I have met do this. This is what is so fantastic about the Golf Sidekick movement. We are all each other's sidekicks. We all want fun, we all want stress-free golf. We don't want the traditional stuffiness, rules aficionado, "future pro" mid handicappers, snooty low handicappers, swing mechanic advice givers. We wanna jam and we wanna jam with similar people!
I got over all that stupid misery and there are tons of new videos coming from Malaysia and I realized I also don't need to film everything! I also realized I don't even have to play while filming other interesting people!
I love to show you playas interesting things and good scores, but I realized i can also have some leisurely rounds without a camera and that's okay. I actually felt like I was depriving the playas of seeing something good or learning something from the bad if I didn't film. LOL, how presumptuous! I am looking to bring new people to the channel so we can celebrate other people's games instead of watching me hack it around the place like a bonehead.
Thank you playas for watching!

I believe it was Mike Tyson who said that first. If not, definitely a boxer. Obviously, basically saying all the planning is great but when it comes game time it's all instinctual and subconscious, so if you can't operate on that level, you're screwed.

Good stuff, as always, Matt. Along with telling oneself IDGAF we should realise that other golfers or our playing partners DGAF about our bad shots either. What I mean is that we can sometimes worry that everyone's judging us and we can get self conscious and far too nervous. This is especially true for newer players. I will always remember my first ever competition; with my shiny new 26 handicap I was drawn to play with three relative strangers whose handicaps ranged from 6 to 13. I was crapping myself on the first tee, (I don't need frogs legs and buffalo to crap myself). Anyway, long story shorter; I walked off the green, on a hole where my previous worst was an 8, with a 13 and hated every moment. That was entirely down to me being tense and scared of what my playing partners would think of me. On the walk to the next tee I gave myself a kick up the arse and made a conscious decision to not GAF, (though I may have used different words). That was the last time I cared that much what other people thought of my golf game. Don't get me wrong, I can still get nervous, but it doesn't impact on my enjoyment. The simple truth is that every golfer only cares about his or her own score, they aren't really bothered in the slightest by ours.
@GolfSidekick
@GolfSidekick 4 жыл бұрын
This is a very simple and overlooked truth. No one cares. It is so true. I dont care if some dude loses 12 balls on the first 5 holes as long as between shots he is pleasant. And then we get in our own heads and think we have to impress others and play to their expectations which dont even exist lol! Great post playa. I should expand on that in a video

I haven't seen you that "untidy" on course in months, but you still put together a relatively decent score for yourself. The majority of your higher scores came in the first few holes, and the rest of your round was only a few strokes over par collectively. That's some serious discipline to keep your head in the game and grind it. Pretty damn inspirational as always brotha!

Hello Matt, about your "range" considerations. It is useful to always visit the range in terms of PRE-ROUND warmup. Hit 2-3 Balls with every club you have and fine, go onto your round! ;-) this is a lot of value...
@GolfSidekick

Yes for sure, i mean when you go to practice, you need to remember somehting of value. For warm up, just to get the swing loose, I think 5-10 balls total, finishing with the club you use on the first tee will be of value

Matt, great video as always. On hole 16 tee shot you can have your choice of any distance for your approach from 50-150 yards and you choose to leave yourself with a partial wedge from 75 yards? I was banking on the draw so I would leave 100 yards into the green. I pushed it a bit. I thought about this before the shot, and knew if it were too far right I would be in partial zone. My intention was to be like 40 yards left of that! LOL

After five weeks away, and playing with two very good pros, it couldn't have been easy. A few suggestions: 1. Lose that mid-mallet putter; 2. More screen time for Pro Bo; 3. nebulonV same here... that’s why I love these videos. Focus on the reason we are out there, to enjoy time with friends, the outdoors, and time away from stresses. No reason it should be additional stress because our game doesn’t meet our standards.

I was about 3 or 4 over after 7 yesterday. On the 8th tee, OB right, I draw my 4W, I aimed at the OB and hit my draw. I had a wedge in from 133m. I then hit 2 shanks, both OB. pretty much f******* the rest of my round. Gave up on shots, lost the fun and care factor. The mental game is of the highest importance.

Yes. Its only one hole. Too much focus on final score. Too much pressure on oneself to have a personal best every round. Too little focus on fun. One hole doesnt make a summer

On hole 10 with the longer birdie putt, playa in chief puts his arms up just before it goes in the hole LIKE A BAUS. If I do this 9.9/10 times the putt isn’t going in the hole 😂

Main problem is eating out. I have 4 or 5 spots I eat out at regularly. When I go upcountry away from Bangkok, I get them more because I am eating in strange places with varying levels of cleanliness. I usually actually eat at home. bit of imported Aussie beef, some NZ lamb, occasional slab of pork belly. And trusted clean fresh produce. These hole in the wall spots will be the death of me, because I like to try a bit of buffalo and frog and whatever else is going

I start to focus on things I love. Like in this round, I imagined my dad and I birding after the round. I imagined we would leave the golf course, and drive to a nearby mountain and bird watch. Then we'd buy some fire wood and make a barbecue. Then we'd tan some meat and wake up to go birding the next day in the cold of the mountains of Chiang Mai. My dad wasn't there and we weren't going birding, but that made me realize this is an escape and that life is a holiday and then we die. I have two other people I am playing with, let me make their experience fun. Don't destroy someone else's day or fun. I tell myself to just hit the next one there. Then walk to the ball and try hit it where I want. Then if it doesn't go where I want, I just remember another good memory of something else. You're going to be there another 3 or 4 hours. Best to just make the best of it, otherwise I really mean this, rather walk off and stop playing...could be for a week, a month or forever but if golf is a source of aggravation, then it's time to get a coach or stop playing for a while and reassess what the purpose of golf is to you
