. Playas, this was my last round in Malaysia and I followed my basic rules to play golf except for two holes where I made two ego shots which were terrible. This is how to play scratch golf. A lot of people may think a 72 here is scratch golf, but in fact the rating is 74.8 which means, 72 would be -2.8 under par.
JUST YOUR AVERAGE GOLFER (Barney): / @justyouraveragegolfer
SHOP: waddaplayagolf...
FB GROUP: / waddaplaya
IG: / golfsidekick
URL: golfsidekick.com/
The 74 I shot here is -0.8 under par according to the rating. This was one of the more solid rounds of golf I have played and fits into the Way of the Playa perfectly. A lot of scrambling because in the end I am still a casual golfer playing once or twice a week.
These rules and principles are essential for good golf and I believe that to my core. I try to always avoid disseminating nonsense to you. I want to always give you the most relatable ideas and really show you some new concepts you could try to get immediate results.
So when you see this and think, 'oh boy he hits it longer than me', I hope you'll realize it's the same game relative to yours in terms of distance.
7,400 is long for me. But that can correlate to 6,400 yards for you. The tees are irrelevant, just pick the right ones. The concepts remain the same. Nothing changes. We play our best shots, at all times, commit, enjoy, plan, think.
I am very saddened when i see "pro's" WHO HAVE LOST TOUCH WITH THE COMMON MAN'S GOLF GAME, showing the common man what they can't do and how if they can't do it, then it's a problem.
I see a future of golf instruction, not golf destruction. I see a revolution. I see an awakening of people who are just tired of being shamed and guilt-tripped into nonsense clubs and shots to hit. Nonsense negativity that caues doubt, fear and anxiety - the three worst things to happen to a golfer.
I want to give you permission so you can play YOUR game, have YOUR version of FUN, enjoy the game of golf and break free of the nonsense other people have put in your brain that makes you question yourself and stay at the level you are at.
We all want to improve. We all want to have fun. Switch off the nonsense, ignore the stuff that you will never be able to or even care to do, and focus on what you can do. be the maximum playa you can be.
When it's time to go see an expert, you should go. Get yourself upgraded in the skills department. Get advice from a solid pro. Get some lessons from someone who has helped someone you know.
KZbin videos of generic swing mechanic information is KILLING this game. Every now and then one will help a certain person but there are so many ideas floating around and your job is not to discern what is good and bad - your job is to enjoy the game and seek knowledge from someone who knows the swing and how it relates to YOU personally.
You are all you ever need to play good golf. You are the thing standing in your way. This game is all about YOU. YOUR preferences are not anyone else's. Youre comfort zone on a golf course is YOURS. Own it playa. You are the BAUS.
For everything else, of course, there's Golf Sidekick. Because I love you all.

Hey matt, had a round of 18 yesterday. Put the way of the playa into work and I broke 100 for the first time! I split distances when I knew I couldn't hit the green. I made sure to eliminate 3 putts as much as I could. And the chipping technique you taught was solid. I am realizing more how important the shots that are 100 yards and less. Gonna go to the range and work on those!! Because of you I finally broke 100!!

Thanks to you, Matt, I'm solidly on my 'Way of the Playa.' Clubs I can always rely on: 3w, 7w, 6i, 8i, gw, putter. Shots I can always rely on: 3w off the tee, 7w off the turf, gw from 90 yds. 7i chip and run, putter from anywhere within 10 yds. And, at 71 yrs. old, the gold tees are plenty of challenge. I'm channeling OMP here in the desert Southwest!

This was an excellent video and just what I needed after my round TODAY. But Matt will this help with competition? I want to be competitive and I'm worried that laying up will waste me good opportunities for lower scores. Trust me I know about the ego that's why I also watch OMP and I love this positivity and style of playing but the players in competition are scoring sometimes 19 under par. Will we ever reach that level playing like this? Hearing about distance helped me because I am struggling getting my ball out there at the moment.

Matt, my game has been a little off lately. 11 handicap that has broken 80 once but have been grinding to break 90 the last 2 months. After watching this video, I played from the tips yesterday at a familiar course. This video is exactly on point. Had more room to miss off tee shots, used 8 or 9 irons instead of wedges into greens, and played smart shots while I watched my group try to smash drivers into the trees while I went 3 wood all day off the tee. Shot an 85 with 600 more yards than I’m used to. Got greedy 2 times and paid for it but used your method for 95% of the round. Thank you for getting my head straight. Playa keep playing.

Have to thank you, Playa. Started playing around 4 months ago and could not break high 90s, low 100s. After watching a handful of your videos and listening to the way to strategically play the game, I was able to not only break 90, but I've consistently shot under 90 the last few rounds.

You give wisdom beyond your years young Man. You remind me of me 30 years ago. I still play twice a week but can't hit it like I used to. Keep up the good work and good luck to you in the future.. I miss being young, but I really enjoy being older- in that you can (in my case) throw your ego in the dumpster where it belongs, and win almost every weekend. If you lose, you can still go home to a Wife and a Dog that love you, and you are only out a few bucks. I get to play like a child with my best friends and do it every weekend. We are competitive as hell and enjoy every moment of it. It is truly the game of a lifetime.

Thanks playa. I miss being younger too. Wisdom only gets the intelligent chicks now. What we need is the baby face and full head of hair again! I mean, a long drive does help. Chicks dig the long ball. Regardless of what hapoens on the course, I am so happy I got over the delusion of PgA tour grandeur. I CAN go home and lie on the sofa and have a barbecue and scratch the dog and not think about golf for a week. But a pro cannot and its great to be an amateur casual golfer. We should embrace all the imperfections as welcome additions! Otherwise we are deluding ourselves into thinking we can be pros

Matt, I recently came across your channel and have been using your 6 6 6 methodology. It works. Biggest thing for me has been keeping driver in the bag and only hit it when you need it. I’ve been using 2 3 and 4 irons off most par 4s and hitting your approach from the short grass is great. I’ve been stuck in the 80s for about 6 years and finally my last 3 rounds I got into the 70s. You’ve made golf fun again. Thanks mate.

Matt just want to tell you that I shot 79 today using the way of the playa. First time cracking 80 and I had 3 birds. I think I’ve found my favorite approach distance which is 8i or 9i distance. In true way of the playa fashion I don’t even mind hitting a bad 2nd on some par 4s because I know I can stick it close with my favorite club for a par. Thanks Matt you’ve revamped my game and love for golf!!

Great video as always! Hole 3 - your wedge shot - I've always found (and this is cliche but true), for wedge shots in between clubs, I take the longer club and grip down. It takes a tiny bit of practice, but once you know your "griped down" yardages, you essentially have double the amount of wedges in your bag. There are two big advantages to this: 1) you always take your normal swing - none of the touchy-feely shots that get us in trouble, and 2) your wedge spin is more consistent. There's often the spin paradox with wedges - the harder you swing, the more spin you produce, so the extra carry yardage is eaten up by backspin.
@GolfSidekick

I usually just tug those shots. I hit that one a bit crap, kind of had a change of heart at the top of the swing and didn't commit to it properly. I wanted to kick myself after that

Hey Matt, I've been loving your channel. This is a great example of why. Very practical mental tips that really tip the scales. Love the whole story around finding your most comfortable shots. It's been life changing for me. I spent 25 years as an 18 handicap. Have in the last 1.5 years worked my way down to 9. Have worked on mechanics of course, but at least 50% of the gain has been due to an improved mental approach. A meaningful fraction of that is due to you. Thank you. If I'm ever in your part of the world, I'll be looking you up!

18 to a 9 handicap. That's what I call, SMASHING the handicap. Waddaplaya. Mental approach and perspective changes everything. People are too focused on the physical, but we cannot see the mind, it's merely there. We need to control it and mould it to our best possible usage. Well done

The best swing tip I ever read, I saw about 24 years ago in a Golf Digest while I was waiting to get my teeth cleaned. It was straight from the man himself, Jack Nicklaus. He said you want to feel as if you are pulling the butt of the club with the left hand down towards the ball in the downswing. When I take my practice swing and I need to really pinch one, that's what I think about, turn low away and pull down through the shot. It creates lag and Matt does it well.

Your focus on developing a few go to clubs and to practice the hell out of them is so spot on. Most amateur golfers don't have the confidence to believe they can get up and down if they're hitting 3 from fairway but as you said you will surprise yourself. I've gotten to the point that I have no problem laying up to 85-125 yds because I honestly feel that maybe half the time I will hit it close enough to not be surprised to make the putt.

Hi Playaz, just in case golf is not fun for you at the moment, despite the great videos from Matt try this honestly it will be great. I am a 25 HCP, but have been playing sh!t the last 5 months, on a good day barely hitting my HCP. I decided to try to make it fun, so I decided to try to run, jog, stagger through 18 holes with just 2 clubs in my hand that I know I can hit easily (no bag, just 2 clubs, balls and tees). I chose my Hybrid 5 and PW. I needed the exercise. What I found over 36 holes, was that I shot 15 over (breaking 90). 2 best rounds of the year. Also my decision making was super easy. My H5 goes from 130 meters to 200 meters. My PW goes 110 to 5 meters. I putt with my Hybrid (it is just as good as with a putter). It is so much fun and I get a workout. Also people at my club think I am nuts. Try it. 😁 Matt I was inspired by your video where you did a round of gold with just a 9 iron hitting under 150 meters.

Hi Matt, great video as always. I agree with all those points and have been trying to follow them in my own game. Most importantly the "every shot counts" thought. I play off 4.0 now, and played an even par round in a tournament yesterday (in pretty awful rainy and windy weather!). To prove the points you make in this video, here are my stats: Par 74, 6650 yards, slope 142, CR 73,8. Fairways hit: 50%. GIR: 44.4%. Up%Down: 75%, SandSaves 50%. Putts: 27. 3 birdies, 3 bogies. That was all - no flashy plays, just a solid short game and good strategy. Lovin your channel, keep up the good work - most playas at my club now understand why I keep planting feathers all over the place! Greetings from Germany.

Glad I came across your videos. I’ve started to employ a lot of your stress free tips before seeing your videos. Glad I can pick up some tips and reinforce some stress free thinking. I started to remove driver much more frequently. No need to take out driver and open myself up to big misses if the hole doesn’t suit my driver swing and I don’t feel comfortable over the ball. Also, it is more important than most realize to account for where a good miss on your approach shot is. Long, short, right, or left. Plenty of misses where an up and down is not particularly tough. Plenty of misses where an up and down is near impossible.

Excellent vid and very enjoyable. Gorgeous course. One thought - to add 4 very useful shorter distances to the toolkit, hone the 9 o'clock shot - left arm back to horiz on the backswing (for rightys) and through to full finish using the same tempo every time. 4 wedges at 9 o'clock = about 75% of the full shot. Practice practice practice and measure. Now you have 4 repeatable partial shots. Then practice the 7:30 and the 10:30 swings for 8 more repeatable distances. Not rocket science but totally game changing. (Not my idea of course - from Pelz's "Short Game Bible"). Cheers and thanks from Sydney, Aust - Dave

He’s correct with the philosophy he’s speaking with. When I was in the junior pga, there was this lil workshop at this big golf center, and the Michigan (UofM) golf coach even stressed to all of us, golf regardless of tees you play at, is the same. You still have to hit the shot, and drain your putts. If people would get that they would probably play better golf, and even see lower scores.
@GolfSidekick
@GolfSidekick 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks playa. You have to hit it into good places, get it in the hole. An easy course on a bad striking day is as difficult as any slope rating 150 course. I could have shot a much higher score here, maybe 81 or 82 but for the desire to get it in the hole.

This should be re named BIBLE FOR SMART GOLF. This is the video that has all the elements playas, watch this one if you like any of Matt's stuff. GIOTG, get to comfy distance, work backwards, lose the ego - it's all here playas. This will be way better for you then watching some swing mechanics of someone you don't swing like - swing mechanic thoughts = death. Matt's right. Just jam.

You mentioned swing thoughts. Mine is " I'm a mo f'ing Samurai !!" Just before the swing. Silly ? of course But it DOES help. It gets me in the right mindset and pushes any other technical nonsense out of my head. I was glad to hear it aligns with your recommendation. Very vague, Very simple, Very fun. haHA

Waydahanginthere! I'm still working to implement your breaking 80 system when I play. I break 80 once in a while, but I'd like to more regularly. So far it's: 6 pars - no problem. Hit 6 greens - check. Get up and down 6 times - nope, I'm lucky if I do that 2 times a round. That stands to reason because the only times I break 80 is when I hit a lot of greens.

I'm sorry to be picky and idk if it was said already...but did you confuse the actor for the golfer? Nicklaus vs Nicholson.....? But overall your channel is awesome. Changed my thought process and started hitting to Texas on a lot more holes. Went from averaging 82-83 to shooting a 77 even with a double bogey. And missed 3 other birdie putts and made 2. It felt good!

I had the round of my life going yesterday. Never had been under par at any point in my life (birdies always came when I was already over par) and I was -1 through 3. Ended up getting to +1 through 7 with 3 birdies already, then couldn't keep it together. Finished around my average, +16 or 88. Decent round but man, it's so hard to put together a mistake free 18 holes.

WOTP is religion! A question for you Matt - You seem to generally play a fade with the Driver but I notice some high draws as well in recent videos. In your vlog with golfeverysecond and promo, you talked about how golf shapes the ball away from trouble. Is there a reason you stick with the fade on several holes in this video when trouble (water) is on the right? I find myself getting nervous if I'm playing a shape that bends towards trouble, even if it's only in play on a horrible slice/hook.
@GolfSidekick
@GolfSidekick 5 жыл бұрын
I don't have the ability to shape it both ways on command. I have been working on the high draw which I can generally pull out now, but I like the fade, it's reliable, it's easy to hit, hit won't get me in toruble like a duck hook and it loses some distance, but fairways and avoiding water is all I need. I just aim it further left for the fade to be able to land middle of the green. This video I was getting the ball flight under more control from range work.. Usually I am looking to fade it and start it left edge of the fairway or further left is there is water right. Often I use 2 iron though when the danger is too present
