Anakin and Obi-wan’s final confrontation is everything I wanted from the show. The way you could hear Vader’s voice blend with Anakin’s was perfection. “Goodbye, Darth” shattered my heart, with Obi coming to terms with his friend/brother truly being gone. The series as a whole wasn’t the home run I thought it would be, but at least they stuck the landing with the final 2 episodes.

The Owen and Beru fight gave me more context and appreciation for their deaths in ANH. I had always felt they were helplessly slaughtered, but this told me no, they would've fought back hard against the stormtroopers. Also, I love how during the Vader fight, he slowly became less "robot Darth" and more "angry Anakin." He started off with his one-hand fighting stance, but then after a while started using both hands, and at one point there's a quick shot of his hands holding the saber, and they did that twitchy finger repositioning thing people often do when they're excited or nervous. Loved that shot.

Yeah but then you think about how incompetent the stormtroopers are and then realize how insane it is that people who held their own against a inquisitor could die to what I assume was a few stormtroopers

My favourite two writing moments in episode: 1. Vader forgets he has fighters on the cruiser and he can follow both he doesn’t have to choose 2. Obi wan decides not to kill Vader even though he has committed a lot of atrocities in the last 10 years, has no desire to change and plans to commit more with no reason other than he just won’t

Vader's mask getting damaged and the words shared between him and Obi-Wan has probably become one of my favorite scenes in all of Star Wars. Say what you want about the rest of the series, but this specific moment is perfectly written, directed, and acted. Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen have such good on-screen chemistry. Ewan nails Alec Guiness' speech pattern perfectly. Hayden gets a lot of flak for the prequels sometimes but honestly it's the dialogs fault and not his. George Lucas wrote some wonky lines for that role in the prequel trilogy. Show ended up being like a 6/10 for me which is "good". The Obi-Wan and Vader stuff was legitimately great but every other aspect of this show struggled. The entire Reva plot just wasn't compelling for me. The reveal that she was a youngling was painfully obvious, and they never really did anything all that interesting with her as a character. I liked little Leia in small bursts but the show used her way too much, that said her final moments with Obi-Wan were really beautifully handled. The action looked pretty decent, especially the big fight between Obi and Vader. Thats obviously were this shows budget went. The other "vault" scenes just looked cheap and awkward. The score was really lacking, which was obvious once the original scores were used and it felt like a breath of fresh air. Overall it was a good show but just so inconsistent. I really don't need a season 2, and it really seems like that's what they're setting up.

The fight was good, but Kenobi literally has 2 chance to kill Vader and save a lot of innocent people from dying by Vader's hands and yet he didn't do it. He fu** up twice now. And what's funny is he already come to terms that his friend is truly dead in this very same episode, and yet let a very powerful dangerous Sith Lord go. Way to go Kenobi.

To me, the holster thing was, and I don’t remember the exact line, but at some point, Leia’s like “give me a blaster” and Obi-Wan’s like “no, you’re 10”. So the holster’s like “you’re halfway there. If we ever meet again, maybe I’ll give you the blaster that goes with this holster”

Two cliches that kept happening that really got old fast was: 1) I need to sacrifice myself, you go run on ahead without me. I rolled my eyes when kenobi said it again in the ship that's getting shot at with only one cannon. 2) Having your foe in the perfect spot to kill instantly by chopping off their head but you instead drag it out or leave them for dead. Need to have a policy that you thermal detonate any body you leave for dead.

There were moments in their fight that were direct parallels to the flashback fight the episode before
@reflectionist
@reflectionist 2 жыл бұрын
I can't wait to see somebody do a frame-by-frame breakdown of the entire duel. Even before it cut away the first time, I noticed that the fight choreography is almost entirely comprised of specific bits of fight choreography from other lightsaber fights in the series. Not only do I think that it was 100% intentional, I think that the sparring flashback in Part 5 was there to call attention to it without pointing it out - the "Mercy doesn't defeat an enemy, Master!" bit. When Obi-Wan starts to run toward Vader, the way he twirls the saber is intentionally set into the frame as a callback to Obi-Wan hauling ass on Theed to catch up to Qui-Gon and Maul, only to be stopped by the last laser wall, forcing him to helplessly watch Qui-Gon be killed. When Obi-Wan starts just swinging wildly and getting the upper hand over Vader perfectly mirrored the stance and technique of Luke Skywalker doing the same in Return of the Jedi, when he yells "CHAAARGE!" (he doesn't really) and starts going ape-shit on Vader right down to the posture and footwork. When Vader throws Obi-Wan, the way he rolls out of it is exactly how Luke rolls down the stairs at the beginning of the duel on Cloud City... That's probably ten percent of the references.
@CrossOutBryce
@CrossOutBryce 2 жыл бұрын
I noticed there were references too! The only thing that felt 1000% new was when Obi Wan escaped the rocks and swung at Vader, only for Vader to stop and deflect the saber back with the force. The move Obi Wan uses to use the momentum of the deflection to spin into another swing that ALMOST hits Vader really surprised me.

I adore the goodbye Obi-Wan gives Anakin. He says, 'then my friend is truly dead' which mirrors the line Luke gives to Vader on Endor where he says 'then my father is truly dead'. Also, he says 'goodbye Darth' which shows that he knows Anakin is no more. Such a powerful scene and one of my favorites in all of Star Wars.

Totally agree with Barrett on Qui-Gon - it was fine for me, but I really, really wanted a bit in Obi-Wan's "A New Hope" hovel, with the two sitting down and talking about Anakin and how Obi-Wan should realize now that he can forgive himself. Vader killed Anakin, Obi-wan did not fail him.

Barrett’s way too obsessed with the cartoons and canon that it shows in his criticisms. Nah that’s fucking dumb lol even the episodes people claim to be good have terrible writing. That’s why I can confidently say those cartoons are for little kids, awful writing. Compare that to something that has amazing writing like the last airbender or Pixar movies, made for kids but adults can enjoy them too.

@@gorzio666 not when they’re cartoons they don’t. 99% of people watching the movies and shows have never seen an episode of the cartoons. I thought that in that moment, Anakin was letting Obi-wan off the hook basically telling him Anakin is dead, so it’s ok to kill me(Vader). I think the reason Vader is so mad in the next scene is because Obi-wan didn’t end his suffering, then the conversation with the emperor suppresses that little bit of Anakin that’s left. My problem with the show is it just feels too low budget / fanfictiony at times. The action wasn't great (with shaky cam trying its best to make it seem more dynamic). Vader saying: "That is why... you will... ALWAYS... lose!" seems like something straight from a comic book. And the music in that fight sounds like it was composed on a Midi keyboard.

The biggest missed opportunity of this show and finale? Not playing the original "Duel of the Fate" score in that last fight. It would have fit perfectly with their relationship and story. Bound by fate, deciding their fate and ending their relationship as master-student. I was shocked that they missed that opportunity. They used a similar score in a similar scale, but much slower (or an extremely abbreviated version of the original) and it just felt underwhelming. Series was okay. A 6,5-7/10 in my books. Some really good moments, but overall just not that great.

But alas, I'm happy overall with the product. The scenes with Anakin and Obi-Wan were top notch throughout the show and I just wish we had more of that along with more flashbacks. The iconic imagery of Darth Vader with a broken mask, where you can see enough of his face to recognize that it's Anakin Skywalker was something I expected all along. I think we all did. The scene was heartbreaking, as it should've been. What I didn't expect was Obi-Wan being like, "You know that weird plot hole with Anakin where he has this huge gash on the top of his head in the Original Trilogy that doesn't look like it could've been made by being set on fire almost 30 years prior? *CHOP!* There it is! It's right there, you can see it clear as purple crayon while Darth Vader's rolling around on the ground scre---trying to scream, and crying sparks." Also, the other thing that I kind of expected, was the VOICE. From the moment that I started to recognize Adam Driver's voice under the post-production of the Kylo Ren mask... and after finding out that Dr. Strange (in the MCU) isn't actually Benedict Cumberbatch's voice, either. He's saying the lines, you can hear it's clearly him saying the lines, but they doubled his voice with another actor because Benedict doesn't have "A Batman Voice", and then hearing how cool it sounded when Ben Affleck was talking through a broken mask in his "Fuck Superman" suit in Dawn of Justice.... I've been dreaming of hearing an amalgamated voice that blends Hayden Christensen and James Earl Jones. And this episode delivered it, and THEN some. I've been rewatching that scene for almost an hour, and I'm not sure if this is because Hayden is older and has a noticeably deeper voice, but there were a few fricatives and plosives in there that I'm almost CERTAIN came from Matt Lanter. (For anyone who might not know - "fricatives" are your F's, and Ph's. "Plosives" are your T's, K's, B's, G's D's, and P's. Literally just the enunciation.) Which is AWESOME, because I actually tweeted about exactly that after watching Part V of Obi-Wan Kenobi, and I'm pretty sure I tagged *all* of you in that tweet.

24:35 - It almost felt like Darth Vader's voice was the result of a pretty complicated and nuanced audio effects chain, built specifically to catch Anakin's weak, damaged, thin, almost frail, voice - intentionally built around the enclosed Vader mask. Some compression, some EQ, some noise gating, a bit of distortion, etc. all working together to create this very specific James Earl Jones voice. So when when the mask is damaged, it was like having that very same complicated and nuanced audio effects chain over a cellphone recording, so those effects are still kind of picking up his voice, but not in the way that they're supposed to be, and being run through a blown speaker.

Qui Gon should've appeared to Obi-Wan when he was buried under the rocks. He shouldn't have said anything at all, and just placed his hand on Obi's heart or shoulder and let Ewan's acting tell you that the point was Qui Gon telling him the strength he needs comes from all who have ever believed in him, which is what the point of that moment was how they did it anyway.

@@alexlyster3459 That's not how Force Ghost Obi appeared to Luke in A New Hope or Force Ghost Yoda appeared to Luke the last one. Both were moments of crisis over their own strength.

I did really like the show, but it was completely carried by Ewan. Don't get me wrong, I liked little Leia, and some of the smaller characters were good enough. I even loved seeing Hayden back! And I still don't think there was anything egregiously wrong with this show, even if some things didn't make sense or were just plain stupid. But Ewan did a really great job, and I have to hand it to him because I've never seen a show be so completely propped up to be better than it actually was by one actor's presence.

Does anyone genuinely want a reva show at this point? Even with better writing I just don't personally care about her character. I would have preferred she held on long enough to learn her lesson and then finally fade away after her semi redemption.

The only thing we didn't get that I wish we would have got was duel of the fates. Other than that, this episode was pretty great.

As a huge fan of Obi-Wan and the tone/atmosphere of the first trilogy (4-5-6), man that new series was bad.

Hmmm. Leia "hung out with a dude for 2 days when she was ten?". She was kidnapped by sith lords twice and was rescued by a mythical jedi but I guess... also if she was aware that she had to be hush hush and protect obi wans location/ identity shouldn't she have sent the message to Ben Kenobi? 🤷 I dug the finale but some issues for sure.

Reva ending up possibly as a grey jedi is best option. I always hoped to see more of grey Kylo Ren.

I think a season 2 or at least continuation of this series exploring connecting to the force and learning more of the force through qui gon would be really cool. Not a 6 episode show but maybe a 3 part mini series involving obi wan and yoda

I did think it was kind of a weak choice to have Obi-Wan once again just walk away from ensuring Vader was actually dead. Like I feel like after leaving him for dead once and having him return, I'd be like okay I need to make sure this dude is in multiple pieces this time

I LOVED this series but I was disappointed with how poorly done Reva was done in the end and the whole Luke battle as well. That was too close to breaking cannon for my liking. Reva could have just survived and that would be enough.

Reva attacking the farm was completely and utterly unnecessary. Leave Luke alone for the love of god. Not every single gap needs to be filled in the canon.

I mean the entire show is technically unnecessary. But that's not the point. For her character it was the tipping point. Like Anakin she'd been giving into her rage for so long she was about to become the very thing she'd sworn to destroy. She couldn't kill Vader, that had become VERY clear to her, so out of pure hatred she tried to kill his son, which would have completed the cycle of violence. It felt like a good conclusion to her arc for me.
