@Fabian Kirchgessner Yeah, I know. Stannis commanded his men from the rear, as Tywin Lannister did, if we wanted to talk referencing the books. But it's a cool line and I like it nonetheless.
@Longshanks16905 жыл бұрын
@Fabian Kirchgessner So Martin doesn't understand his own characters, because he wrote Blackwater? And yeah, that absolutely is Stannis. It doesn't matter how many had to die so long as he could take his rightful Throne.
@Longshanks16905 жыл бұрын
@Fabian Kirchgessner Yes, it was his duty to take the throne to save the realm (or vice versa.) And it was the duty of every one of his soldiers to die if necessary in order to put him there. Stannis accepted this. This is not a contradiction. Keep in mind this is the same man who sacrificed his stepfather, executed his brother, would have murdered his nephew and will murder his daughter. (And he will) Duty and sacrifice are part of the same coin to Stannis. Also, he only let the Wildlings become his subjects so long as they bent the knee. They refused, which made them his enemies, for Kings only have subjects and enemies, according to Stannis.
@Longshanks16905 жыл бұрын
@Fabian Kirchgessner I didn't condemn him for having Renly killed, merely pointed out that he did it. Stannis is the One True King, ruled by justice and duty. And he murdered his brother. A good act does not wash out the bad and all that. Ok, now you're just making excuses. In the books, Lord Florent didn't even get the chance to present his terms to either Stannis or the Lannisters. He had him executed for thought crime. And in the show, Stannis had him executed for refusing to tear down the sept under Stannis' orders. Moreover, you can tell from the scene that Stannis disliked having to do it, he simply regarded it as his duty. Either way, he had no right to burn him. The punishment for Treason in Westeros is beheading - NOT burning. So either way, he isn't acting as a traditional King would. As I said, he will burn her in the books. And Stannis in the books expresses disgust at the concept of harming Edric Storm in the same book that he orders that boy's execution. What's the point about him naming her his heir? He is capable of changing his mind, and does it often based on circumstance. They didn't attack "his" realm. They attacked the Night's Watch, outside the Iron Throne's jurisdiction. And he wasn't in any position to punish them. They're not his subjects. The point is moot. Also, can people please stop saying "Stannis would never..." in regards to something cruel? Yes, he absolutely would.
@justafaniv10975 жыл бұрын
@Fabian Kirchgessner I dont think it is particularly cruel, it's just realistic. Stannis knows that this is his one chance to take the city and crush the Lannister menace. Though thousands may die, they will win the war. Stannis sees that the Lannisters are prepared to mount a vigorous defense, but he knows the casualties here to end the war will be worth it if he wins. Unlike other kings *cough* Renly *cough*, he has no illusions about the cost of war, and wont delude himself or his men.

Stannis is indeed the rightfull heir, but he sadly never stood a chance of capturing king`s landing. To dispel some of the hopes and dreams of his fans: if edmure had allowed tywin to pass, the tyrell`s would have just marched on stannis` back on their own(at tywin`s request), since they CANNOT have him win due to his wife. if the vale joined robb, it would only have pulled robb east to link up with them, given the westerlands more time to recover and force tywin to retreat south, thereby linking up with mace, even earlier. thanks to the personalities of balon greyjoy, tyrion, baelish and doran martell, no-one else was rising against the lannisers. stannis and robb were doomed the moment renly declared himself king(curse you melisandre!). heck, scarp that, I think with all the people in power at that particular time, the lannisters were certain to win the second tywin beat roose bolton. tyrion and doran silenced dorne, baelish the vale, renly and melisandre wrecked stannis` chance to claim the throne and created the tyrell-lannister alliance, and balon, theon and roose made sure robb was doomed in the long run. some things just aren`t meant to be sadly. :(

I know this is besides the point you're trying to make (that they should of had the trebuchets inside the walls at Winterfell) but those trebuchets were WAY too far away to fire over the walls. The biggest trebuchets with the heaviest counterweights could fire 200-300lb (90-133kg) rocks maybe 1000 feet (333 yards). GRRM has stated that King's Landing was slightly bigger than Paris or London. Meaning a trebuchet as far back as it is claimed to be would be MILES away from the walls. For a trebuchet to be able to fire into the river they'd have to be pretty much directly behind the walls. Or on Aegon's High Hill between the Red Keep (outside of it) and the river.

There was ZERO reason for Robb to keep him in the dark about the full extent of his plans. It's crazy how just a little bit of better diplomacy could easily have assured victory for Stannis, Renly, and Robb. Robb's father died defending Stannis's claim to the throne. If Robb realized this, he could have been content being Warden in the North under Stannis as King, just like his father was for Robert. Renly is the next in line the throne after Stannis because Stannis has no sons, not for lack of trying. If Renly realized this and was patient, he could have helped his older brother and just become king later in life. And then both Barratheon armies working together with the Starks and Tullies could easily have overwhelmed the Lannisters. It seems like it's Stannis's fate to get perpetually screwed over by people who should be allies not being satisfied with arrangements that are still very much in their favor. It happens again later with Jon. Jon has the chance to make a beautiful wildling princess his wife and get turned into Jon Stark, Warden of of the North if he helped Stannis, but the dumb vows to weirwood trees mattered to him more.

I'm desperately waiting for a video on The Battle of Winterfell. The fact that the whole cavalry was used to charge at an enemy which was not going to lose morale or break ranks, because it was the undead, was just abysmally stupid. They were better suited for harassment, reconnaissance, logistics and communications. The Dothraki and the Unsullied were sacrificed for convenience and saving money and time. Then, the position of the infantry outside the walls, the absence of any trenches, a poor use of two dragons, no use of missile infantry, little to no force stationed on the walls and a pathetic line of stakes that was apparently mean to be a barrier, these factors prove that the battle or defence if you can call it that was planned by idiots. If their objective was to draw out the Night King, why not use Bran as the centre of communications and command, as well as for reconnaissance? The fact that they killed the Night King was due to sheer luck and poor writing, it was not an outcome of good planning or strategy. And I can write an essay about the show's pathetic writing.
@Geo35z5 жыл бұрын
I agree it was definitely a poorly thought out battle and a bit disappointing. One thing I’m not as bothered about as other people are is the Dothraki charging though, in the show and book lore Dothraki are famous for being unbeaten on open ground, also Dothraki don’t fight skirmish tactics they are only loosely based around the huns and tribes of the steppe but don’t fight like them. One example in the books is when they charged something like 3k unsullied spears head on over and over again and totalled up something like 20k losses, because they valued strength above all else and would rather die than lose in an even contest. So I think it’s very reasonable that these people who have the strongest cavalry in the known world, weapons tipped with dragon glass and also ablaze that they would think they would make a sizeable dent on to the dead army, no ones ever fought the dead before they didn’t know. My problem is that they didn’t make a dent ! They should have ploughed straight through the dead. Rest of their tactics I agree with you were dog shit

Tywin is the perpetual perfect choice for the second-in-command of an empire, as the way the man schemes almost always improves the stability and health of the seven kingdoms at large, even if it may be worse for his enemies on an individual level. Additionally he can be trusted to always support that which benefits his house the most in the long-term, and this consistency makes him easy to work with and around. Tywin does not rebel until he can be certain that the emperor has lost. Tyrion takes after his father, and will likely prove an equally skilled player once he achieves the level of experience his father managed before his irrational hatred of his son brought him down.

As the smoke cleared, more Baratheon men emerged on top of the hill. In the front line, was Ser Clayton Suggs, holding a pike. On the blade of the pike, was the head of The Bastard of Bolton. The vanguard of the Baratheon Army was led by The Bastard of Eddard Stark, who drew Longclaw. He led a fierce charge down the hill, ripping through the Frey van. As intense fighting ensued, Ser Godry Farring and Richard Horpe both led two halves and crashed into the Lannister flanks. On the hilltop, was King Stannis Baratheon at the head of 500 cavalry. As Jon's center started to open up, Stannis' knights charged through the Frey lines and straight through the Lannister center. Within 5 minutes, the whole army collapsed. Every Frey and Lannister man captured was drowned in the river as retaliation for the massacre of Northmen at The Battle of The Green Fork two years prior. The Twins were burned and the food was added to Stannis' baggage train.

Tyrion held Stannis’ armies long enough that Tywin’s incoming force would crush the majority of Stannis’ army. It’s hard to say who did the most in that battle. On one hand, Tywin just had to move and charge at Stannis’ huge army from the back, hoping that Tyrion bought them enough time. While Tyrion bought time, burning like half of the Stannis fleet and led assaults himself. But also killing most of his defenders and burned all of his fleet down as well.
@enjoythestruggle Жыл бұрын
Stannis' army was, sadly, not so huge. He had about 20,000 men, roughly what Robb had. The combined Lannister - Tyrell army had 80,000, not counting the defenders in the city. The reason for this is that Renly went to confront Stannis with only a portion of his army, the majority of which Stannis converted, but Stannis never got to convert the rest of Renly's massive army because the Tyrells made sure to disband it and send it on their way before he could do so. Basically whoever secured the Tyrells' aid was gonna win, but Stannis had no time for politics, he had to use his army or lose it - those men were eager to attack King's Landing, and waiting would've conferred no advantage. Tyrion definitely did the most work with the least amount of resources, then almost gets murdered by his own during the battle and gets no thanks for his effort. Whether Stannis would've had enough time to breach the city and the Red Keep to make his victory complete had the outer walls fallen sooner is unclear. It's very likely the deal between Tyrells and Lannisters wouldn't stand if all of the Lannisters ('Baratheons') in King's Landing were dead though.
