Personally, I think Batman: The Animated Series had the 40s aesthetic but also the technical aspect. What most batman shows lack nowadays is the scenes of batman showing his humanity and that he is and always will be human. The animated series gave it a huge unique perspective of Batman, for example the baby doll episode or when batman felt sadness over clayface falling into the water at the laboratory.

The wreason why the crime and gritty aspects are handled so well is probably because Ed Brubaker who wrote many Batman comics in the early 2000s post No Man's Land time period was a master of that genre, remember he and Greg Rucka collaborated a lot on things like Bruce Wayne Fugitive and Officer Down etc. He's in his element here and I think when it comes to writing compelling murder mysteries he's one of best Batman writers in the past 20 years.

It's a bummer to hear that the show is just kinda average. Batman: The Animated Series is my all time favorite TV series, and I also love Superman and Justice League to death (Bruce Timm is a genius). They did some very odd race swaps which werent necessary at all. but besides that they did some cool stuff with characters like gentleman ghost showing up early for this batmans carreer. And the setting was really cool to see. but there are legit issues that a season 2 needs to solve. But im happy i took the time to watch this show.

Batman TAS nailed what people expected from this show already. I think where it really fails is the middling supporting cast and Batman being the side character. Some of the episodes I did enjoy, the Catwoman one was the most fun. And I liked the unique take on Clayface for this era the story takes place. However I’d say this a mixed bag. If you want something akin to the old classic comics you’re better off with Batman: The Brave and the Bold or the Batman: Year One film.

I will admit the show could’ve used a little bit more Batman. Also, I literally binged the entire series this morning, and it actually felt really rejuvenating and kind of good to binge a show. Since we’ve been so used to an episode each and every week. I thought it was pretty solid. I don’t think anything will ever match the animated series, but this is a solid series so far. A few bumps and minor things, I felt Penguin being female wasn’t really a “agenda” to be “woke”.. I would say the same thing with Harley Quinn and Renée Montoya.. it didn’t feel woke it just felt odd and kinda there but I was in bothered by it too much. But I really enjoyed the new guy as Batman quite a lot, definitely gave me Affleck vibes with a bit of that heart of gold in there. I adored him slowly caring for others and Alfred

I’m personally a huge fan of the Batman that ties the line between a lunatic in a bat costume and an actual hero and this has it in strides. On top of the fact that you’re aware one of the major writers of the show wrote Gotham Central right? I personally don’t mind the show not being about Batman all the time because of how great the political aspect with Gordon and the commentary there was, and Montoya as well getting a spotlight that she hasn’t had since btas really. As well as there are episodes that aren’t focused on Batman in btas, so I don’t get the beef with that either. Gotham is its own character, so I’d expect the officers in gcpd to get some love etc. The only thing that really suspended my immersion was the stuff in ep 5. I feel we’ll get Gordon more in the next season since how they left it in the finale and probably more Batman. It’s an 8/10 for me, I really liked eps 2,4,6,7,9&10. Didn’t care for the Catwoman episode at all, probably the most mid episode by far. Hopefully they’ll go in the same direction with the next one with some light revisions.

Nailed it on the head. A lot of the choices are baffling. And someone at BAD ROBOT has a fat fetish. From ALFRED to MONTOYA, a lot of the character models are fatties. They gave Harley the Venom treatment. Venom ain't shit without Spidey and Harley ain't shit without Joker, especially when it comes to her origin story. The show was more irritating than entertaining. Just kept asking myself "why?". Keep BAD ROBOT and JAJA ABRAMS away from my Batman. The woke aspects ruin the good stuff.

I’d give it a 7/10. It’s okay at some parts and the show feels scared to display Batman or convey Batman and his origins. One of the strongest episodes imo focused on Bruce Wayne. It just feels like the GCPD were the center of the show rather than Batman or Bruce. Harvey was also done pretty dirty considering his perfect display in BTAS, I just wanted different voices, penguin didn’t quite feel like penguin nor did Harley Quinn and her brainwashing which did feel like Harley but instead a genderbent mad hatter that used those brainwashing to get his way. I do hope Batman is more focused on within season two.

Based on how the season ended, I can see this Batman becoming closer to BTAS Batman's personality. I also liked that it showed other members of the supporting cast actually doing things. Made Gotham feel alive. 8/10.

I didn't know Penguin being a guy was such an integral part of the character honestly I have watched it and the gender and race swap didn't bother me at all the characters were interesting and while different still feels like the character we come to know just different going back to Penguin while they did a gender swap and made her a mother still feels like the cold uncaring mob boss we know in her episode and spoilers ahead she kills one of her sons cause she thought she was a snitch and tries to kill the other cause he was the snitch with an artillery cannon while he's in Gotham precinct you cannot tell that does not sound like something any other version of the Penguin would do

I didnt like harvey he was too much of an asshole, when he became 2 face, i didnt feel as bad a The Dark Knight Harvey, also im tired of them killing 2 face before he becomes a villan, he can be pretty solid

They did that because the formula was to go back to one dimensional evil villains from that era of comics which at times can be off-putting. I like the BTAS formula where it humanized some of the villains. They had real reasons to resort to crime and in some cases you see them try to fit back into society

I feel like it's more of 5.5/10 when it does things right it does things right but the Penguin, Harley, and the last episodes were just bad for different reasons that are all spoilers. Worst offender being the Harley one idk what was the actual point if only to have the gay character. Which is brutally honest but that how it felt. She didn't move the story further and kinda has a weird fetish thing going on for her patients which is kinda creepy. Also also 4 mins of breaking plexiglass until it cracks instead of going to the console. Man they made Barb stupid. Penguin was pointless you really could have kept the character the same and it wouldn't have changed a thing the only that's there is again for diversity sake and "strong" woman character which you could've had with Catwoman but they messed that one up too.

I also find it ironic that for show trying to be "inclusive" for a modern audience they somehow found a to double down on being sexist and racist all while protaying Batman in similar vain to Robert Patterson where he acts more like a rich brat who thinks that he can help the city but causes more harm than good which I can give more excuses for this version than Robert Patterson since he actually did have a personality albeit he's a jerk but the performance wasn't devoid of life and he actually did detective things and at times really did act like Batman. But I guess all this is following the whole Batman is a rich white man who's bad but rich white man 🤦‍♂️. Main takeaways you can't give the excuse that's it's an elseworld story for bad writing especially if your said elseworld doesn't have a main universe tv show that is getting multiple seasons to back the elseworld show that's just stupid. Second the show is definitely something that I can only watch once but I wouldn't pick it up after that because it just doesn't hold interest the same vain especially if you're going to insult the characters by "fixing" them

I liked the show, but there were times where I was slightly put off by times where they would try and portray women in the show in a way that seemed motivated by some type of company agenda. I’m trying not to spoil but entire characters genders are switched for no plot related reason other than what seems like representation although better representation would be if you just portrayed every character in their comic accurate versions that people already liked and is known to work

Im definitely mixed, im ok with some of the changes. The Penguin being a woman works. Clayface looks great but the writing couldve been better. Catwoman was great, Firefly was there, Otomotopia was fun, the girl was there, i liked Batman saving her, Harley was done alright until she was Harley Quinn, amd Two Face sucked. When we talk about modern changes the best way wau to handle it is by trearing it like dye. Its still thevsame character just eith a different look, which alwas begs the question why do it? Some things work, other dont. I think we all know what they are

To me, an aspect i personally hate is the purposeful blackwashing of redhead female characters. I haven't seen much of the show, but from what iv heard, they don’t even use it for anything except look shes black. It's an oddly specific attack that all these redheads are specifically changed. Almost like theirs something wrong with being a white redhead but fine if black. Its like a calling sighn for someone on their high horse preaching how good they are. Their has been good black redheaded characters, diesnt mean everyone should be made to be so.

Honestly a pretty good show for me. I see what you mean about the 1940's issues but it didn't necessarily ruin it for me in anyway since I saw it overall as like a fictional 1940's era specifically. I did like a lot about the show and yeah we did need more Batman. I'm looking forward to that second season regardless

Loved all the Barbra Harvey stuff and the dirty Gotham PD cops and Rupert Thorne stuff too and I liked that the Batman was barely. On. Screen nice change and it feels so organic as a new chapter in the 90s Batman the animated series universe and new Harley design was actually pretty cool too and the setting is a fictional animated version of the 1940s bro it was not supposed to be accurate and the writing was as stellar as it was for the original Show.

Late to the party but after finishing the season, there are definitely things I didn't like, but the good outweighed the bad and I definitely want a season 2 so we can see Batman grow more as a character. Maybe add Robin to help with this transition

Haven't seen this yet but I'm almost finished with my very FIRST watchthrough of Batman The Animated series and The New Adventures. All around a solid series with a few weaker episodes and lack of consistency with characterization but my standards are set HIGH. So I'll see how this is...but can't say I'm too hyped with all the character changes...like "Oswalda" and Harley Quinn

I made it thru the 1st 3 episodes, the show is ok, its keeping my interest...I do like the '40s atmosphere, a simpler time. correct me if I am wrong, I am not a DC guy but this is EARTH 2 BATMAN...right? I dig it, not even close to BTAS or THE BATMAN but a good watch. I like the BATMAN stuff but I would like to see other DC heroes get showcased in their own shows.

Good review, my man! You got me laughing when you said "if you're gonna be in the 40s, stick with the 40s". Even for Bruce Timm and James Tucker that was gonna be hard, I think. Like you, I grew up on BTAS and found the Bronze Age Batman to be his best era as I got more into it but I'm glad that Timm/Tucker are visiting this golden age take now bc I can probably better appreciate it as an adult than when I was a kid during the original run on Fox Kids. Super excited for it when it drops (please increase the episode count for S2 and S3, Amazon)

The show sounds like it's got some major promise to it. I'm excited to see how they do this. A couple small things before I address your review/preview: 1. The comment about sane people. C'mon, there's at least ONE person out there that likes even the worst things. I'd have said there are some things that would drive fans crazy rather than insinuating that things that you didn't like are well...insane. 2. Fleischer cartoons, not Fisher 3. TV was around in the '40s but to a very minimal extent. Indeed if the show had been set in the mid '50s it'd be fine. I can buy TV technology if it's limited to Batman/rich people but if everyone has a TV it's stretching things a little bit. Anywho, onto your review/preview. It makes sense that Batman is really brutal and sticking to his mission as that's the way Batman was in his early days both in the contemporaneous comics and in modern interpretations of that era. I'm not sure i'm completely jake on the idea of a funny man Bruce Wayne but i'll give it a shot considering this is early in his career and he probably doesn't know how to balance out the two personas quite yet. The GA Batman is my 2nd favorite iteration (I'm with you, the O'Neil/Adams Batman is awesome) so i'm sure to like that take on the character. Regarding how Batman is kind of in the shadows with other people having more of a lead role is not a foreign concept as it's been done from time to time in the comics. It all depends on the balance. If Barbara Gordon is all over the screen and feels like she overwhelms Batman than that can be a problem but if Batman is going to be more of a shadowy, violent and scary figure you DO need a brighter character to enliven things. Not sure if we can call her a Mary Sue without the masses seeing her. Even so, let's not forget that Harley Quinn and Renee Montoya were pretty Mary Sueish in B:TAS. Last but not least, I can understand the push and pull you're talking about. I'm sure the people working on the show wanted to COMPLETELY put this in the '40s and keep it super accurate but the suits ALWAYS get a little scared when you play a bit too much out of the established sandbox. From what you're saying it sounds like there was at least some light interference. As for the show itself it sounds like it has promise and there's going to be some bumps along the way. Not every show comes out perfect straight out of the box. Hell the first broadcast episode of B:TAS was NOT indicative of what came later as it was closer in tone to the Adam West version than what followed. IMO everyone should at least watch a couple episodes and JUDGE FOR YOURSELF. Don't let others influence your enjoyment or dislike of the show. From what I get the series seems to morefocus on other characters aside from Batman and batman himself seems very dower and dark. Yeahhh being very cautious about this... Maybe if there's a season 2 where there's some character development with batman being more heroic and friendly and gets more focused or maybe Barbra becomes Batgirl and works with him then maybe I'll give it a shot. That said, this series doesn't sound up my alley. Waster opportunity
