David and I knows that this weekend will be crowded up in local mountains here in SoCal so we picked a less popular trail to continue training for some mountaineering skills. Acorn Trail is such a challenge for anyone who wants to try to climb Mt Baldy, Pine Mountain or Dawson Peak thru the North Backbone Traverse side. It's closed to being vertical, direct and strenuous of all approach towards Baldy. The trailhead is located in the private retreat center, the Saint Edward Retreat Center. The parking is limited and they ask for donation instead of parking fee. From parking you still have to hike half a mile to reach the proper trial head marker. This is the trail the PCTeers take to get down to the town of Wrightwood and resupply.
This day was cold, windy and rainy. By the time we reach 600ft of elevation gain, the terrain becomes so icy and dangerous for us to traverse the mountain. We decided to call it and we head down to safety. It was a fun day nevertheless. We had some great Mexican food at Mexico Linda Restaurant, we never went home empty-handed after all.

Such a great example to show people that you need to consider safety before the goal of the trip. Always surprised me how a sketchy uphill section going uphill can feel so much more treacherous coming back down. Best advice I tried to give hikers in the winter was: "If you don't feel safe, turn around and consider it a training hike. The mountain will be there for the next try when conditions are better." Meanwhile, Tacos!!!

Well said, Lonnie! Part of our training is the discipline how to accept the reality. Hike is not just reaching for the summit as a price but keeping oneself out of danger as well. We learned a lot on this attempt. Maybe we will be back this way in the summer.

That's a rough trail in the best of conditions. Can't imagine doing it in freezing, blowing snow conditions. Glad you guys made the decision to end the hike when you didn't feel comfortable continuing.

A friend told me about this hike and he said that it was a beast. Me and David did a lot of climbing winter and some of them were failed attempt due to trail conditions.

Smart decision , regardless of the mountain when weather is dangerous is time to go back home . March 3 was really icy everywhere I did turn around at Ice House Canyon Saddle on my way to Ontario Peak .

Robert you're a good soul and I'm glad you didn't die because if you did it would have been on the wussiest sounding trail I ever heard of. I guess you didn't want it that bad and I don't blame you . I love stations of the cross kiosks along the way. The only real disappointment I see is the fact that you guys didn't eat at Mile High Pizza. It's stupidly good! God bless you man . Tagay!

Ha ha ha! Of course we wanna get home in one piece. We were thinking of pizza but I forgot the name and address so we ended up going back to same place. Next time! Tagay!

We've climbed Mt Shasta in May, Baldy Bowl in Jan, San G in Jan, San J in Feb, and were defeated by the puny Acorn trail 🤣We'll have to go back when it's not so windy, cold, and icy for redemption.

Ha ha ha! Sometimes we lose I guess for our benefit. But yeah, we should redeem ourselves. And we can, let’s go all the way!

Actually a sheriff’s patrol car passed us by before the trail, both officers seemed playing in the snow for a while before leaving. You can even see the white car in the video at the beginning.
