I gotta say, I absolutely hated Abby. I saw all the hate and felt that she deserved all that and more(Abby, not Laura Bailey). But once I got to that part where Yara dies and.. to see Abby stand in the way of the WLF and Lev and to see how she was willing to just give her life just to give this kid just that extra moment at life, even if it wouldn’t be that much.. that is when Abbys character turned around for me. That is when I started liking her and actually caring for her Its crazy because in literally any other situation Ellie and Abby would’ve been best friends. The only reason they’re enemies is just because of the circumstances. I mean, if you put aside your hate for Abby, then you can see just how much her relationship with Lev just parallels with Ellie and Joel. What’s even more crazy is how in her relationship with Lev, she takes on Joel’s role. Hate me if you want but.. The similarities you see between Abby and Joel are insane.

How can you not eventually put your hatred toward Abby aside if you are a sane person though? She is a fictional character who killed a fictional character in a game where even the most decent persons do horrible things because pain and immediate survival pushed them beyond what they could take. Abby isn't worse than Joel, she's not even worse than Ellie. I don't think Ellie and Abby will ever truly forgive each other but I think that Abby will eventually admit that killing Joel was a mistake, maybe she had already realized that by the end of the game. And I think that Ellie also regrets to have killed so many people in her quest for closure.

not quite. she was not meant to be a villain. her horrible actions were a result of a horrible trauma. then she goes on to learn that her actions was futile. not only did it cause a lot of trauma to all people involved but it didn't help her to get over her trauma. gradually she finds her closure in positive action, in helping other people. in letting live when she has a choice to kill. which then positively impacts how ellie deals with her trauma and let's abby live. it is really a brutal and sad but in the end a beautiful circle. becoming better people, coming back from a really dark place. and yes, in the end i absolutely agree that laura bailey did absolutely stunning job. it's because of her portrayal of abby i actually gave abby a chance. people are so blind to what goes on in the game it is almost stunning.

Watching Abby carry Lev to safety at the end really hit me. Ellie was finally on the other side looking at what her and Joel had endured years ago to survive together. So many emotions at once. And that final fight, all of those feelings unleashed after everything they had done to that point, was beautifully unbearable.

I put my contoller aside when the fight started because I was not gonna kill Abby. It was an emotionally difficult part/end of game for me. Abby killed me a few times before I decided if I wanted to end the game, I had to keep playing. Even though she survives I was still crying seeing Abby fight for Lev, bring so weak but still so human, and having purpose while Ellie was still grieving/angry/traumatized, such amazing storytelling

I think Abby's character was amazing and complex. Also Laura's performance is exceptional. Reasons why not to hate on Abby: To avenge a family member's death is in most people's eyes is righteous, especially when you consider what her Father was trying to do in potentially saving billions of lives. Even her journey post Jackson, she's respected and liked by her peers. She obviously has a disdain for WLFs methods and she truly wants to move on considering she decided to let go of Ellie and Tommy, who she knew he was Joel's brother, when most of the others wanted to kill them. Also, the adventures of Abby, Lara and Lev again prove Abby's true character, that she's just tired of all the bullshit, just wants peace and will always protect those who have her back. Finally, even after seeing her friends die by the hands of Ellie & friends, she still didn't kill them after Lev reminded her who she was (apart from Jesse, but I think that was due to her mad reaction skills).

We all love Joel, but let's be honest, for another perspective he wasn't a 'good guy'. He knew they'd come after them eventually. That's why he killed Marleen. In part 1, Ellie let her guard down and Joel didnt/couldn't. In the end they switched roles. I think this is why in Part 2 Joel chooses to help the 'stranger'. He never would've in Part 1. He softened. After 20 years he finally grieved and got 4 years of an actual life before 'they came for him'.

Abby could of been a VERY beloved character and even enjoyed her story arch if done the right way instead of forcing us to like her after doing what she did not even an hour into the game and then later seeing what Ellie does to those who helped Abby on her task. Laura is one of my favorite voice actors who i even watch during critical role as jester! Its all just gone to hell after how they done the story the wrong way and in the wrong order of things. Joel's death was not a surprise as we all knew that one day he would either die in a heroic way but this is the last of us, there is no true right or wrong only the morale grey, Joel killed a LOT of people to save 1 person. Ellie did the same but only noticed at the very end what she did. Abby i don't know how many people she killed to get and find Joel but after what she did was finished she went home and tried to forget it all. They wrote her to be sympathetic, but that's literally what most stories do with their main characters. By that logic, they must have "forced" you to like Joel because they "manipulated" the writting to make him seem descent even though he's killed and tortured a lot of people (or it could just that playing in his shoes, means the writting will gravitate torwards trying to make his actions understandable). If anything, they forced you to hate her by only showing her worst actions first with little build up. And that's awesome: that you get to experience completely hating this person, with the confliction coming after.

I remember when the game got leaked and, even when trying to avoid spoilers since I was excited for the game, still heard what happened to Joel, I decided not to freak and to wait for the game. Sadly, because that got spoiled, it lost some of its initial impact for me, because I was already aware of it. So because of that, I have to say screw the person who leaked the game, they ruined such an emotional part for me. As for my opinion of Abby, I feel that if you genuinely hate a character, the actor/ess is doing something right. What's more is that if they can get you to go from hating to understanding and even liking said character, that's an even greater performance, and I feel Laura (who's done a tone of great work) was able to truly pull it off well.

I think this game successfully traumatized people and the hate this game and Abby's character got is directly linked to the PTSD suffered by the people who were not ready to witness Joel's death. Laura did a phenomenal job as always, she's so good. Mary Jane in Spider man, Abby in TLOU2, Helena in RE6, etc. Awesome actress and those are just a couple of my favourite performances by her off the top of my head, I know there's shit tons more. She's the female Nolan North or Troy Baker, probably the best female video game voice actor around at the minute. Ashley Johnson would be in the same boat with her if I'd seen more of her work other than Ellie. Also, sending death threats to an actor who was just doing their job because you hate their character is pathetic. Grow up people.

Here's why, to me, this game is a masterpiece and even better than the first part in some ways : First thing first, people got overcarried by the hate coming from the leaks, which were out of context. Now that the game is out and we have proper context to look into it all, it's obvious the writers knew perfectly what they were doing all along and it feels like a really well planned story. But of course some of those youtubers/influencers/whatever are just looking for easy views and bucks, and right now it means hating the game and follow what started with the leaks. You can disagree with the story of course, but not to the extent of sending death threats to the writers, or the actors. That's just wrong and childish, period. No one back then had proper context to judge the game. Firstly, to me, the game honors Ellie and Joel bonds deeply : you can feel Joel's presence all the way during the first half of the game, and seeing how Ellie does take care of a whole militia brings back memories of how Joel would have done it. She has the same moves. She has the same way (and of course, you do as a player) of wiping enemies. At one point during the game Dina says to Ellie "where did you learn how to do that ?" and she answers "Joel taught me". This is a testimony of how Joel affected Ellie, and yourself as a player. The flashbacks are here to remind you constantly of that special bond. It culminates when Ellie tries to do the same map trick Joel taught her, but it backfires on her, because she's not him. And Ellie's own failures end up in killing a pregnant woman. That's why she hates Abby so much (who seems to be successful and invicible to Ellie at that point of the game - but of course she isn't given how she loses everything and how she ends up enslaved). Secondly, people can't stand the fact Joel died. But Joel made that terrible choice at the end of the first game of saving Ellie at all costs. He put this on himself. And he then got soft because of the safety provided by Jacksonville and because of the redemption he found with having Ellie. You can feel it all the way during the prologue. They ALL got careless, forgetting how dangerous the world can be. There are tons of details for it : the reports on how many infected they killed during patrols (filled with smileys and jokes, even Joels after a while), the way they bring people in Jacksonville, Joels house (when you visit it, you can feel the guy has turned soft because he has Ellie in his life and he found redemption : he has an artistic soul again, given how much time he's been spending carving wood and playing guitar - things that felt meaningless to him in the first part - I couldn't believe Joel has such a sensitive soul inside given how he had to hide it all after what happened to his daughter and what he had to do to survive during those 20 years. But of course he had to switch off that survivor mentality for it). Now about Abby (who also plays as a Moby Dick for Ellie until the end). First, the thing her dad says when he tells her he would do just as Joel to save her even if her death would prevent humanity for getting a cure was a way to tell her we all have flaws, and so does she as she was blinded by hate for Joel. Then, the game takes a huge turn when Lev and Yara come around, it takes a whole different step because ultimately, as she says, she chooses their side over the Wolves or the Scars. That's the defining moment (on the island) when I started really caring about Abby. What matters most is the individuals, not the group logic and systemic way of dealing with things (rings any bells to how people flamed this game despite having played it or explored it enough ?). You have to look into individuals and not judge them depending on which group they're a part of (and btw, Ellie comes to the same conclusion when she writes in her diary while in Santa Barbara : "Fireflies, Scars, Wolves... f*** them all" ; she's on the same mental process as Abby, Abby just being ahead a bit). That's a wonderful character development and morale. And btw : Abby DOES show remorse and is tortured by what she did. The nightmares didn't go away with Joel's death. And Laura Bailey plays it perfectly when she kills Joel : she has seconds of hesitation and you can feel her vulnerability. Of course she's too consumed by it to show it directly. And I like to think Yara and Lev is a way for her to find purpose again and to redeem for what she did. The game doesn't give you anything easy and you actually have to dig deep into it to get your answers. You have to read diary logs, you have to listen to all of the conversations, you have to look into the environment to get it all. It doesn't treat you like a 5 years old, spoonfeeding you easy answers to make you feel better. I've never seen a game this detailed and well carved. I've never seen a game making me think over and over things, and to think about how we react as human beings. And that's coming from a die-hard Witcher 3 fan. As for the ending, notice how Ellie, when she is about to kill Abby, get her first "good" flash of Joel. Until then, she was only having flashes of him covered in blood. She was filled with anger and hate. And at the end of it all, when she finally gets her hands on Abby, she remembers him smiling with his guitar. Why does she ? Because she finally has the upper ground. She finally is able to let Abby live or die. She saw her enemy falling to a state she's barely recognizable anymore. She saw her nemesis, the one character she once saw as invicible and so much stronger than her, being this frail creature. She finally sees the monster she's been hunting is not existing. And that reminds her of forgiveness. She finds redemption. And her losing her fingers and not being able to play guitar is just a way of showing how much of herself she has been losing on this quest for revenge. I felt the ending was pretty uplifting because Ellie seemed to be at peace with it all, for the first time since Joel took her from the Fireflies. She finally has been able to forgive Joel. She was both hating and loving Joel because on one hand he stole her life purpose (by stealing her immunity purpose) but on the other hand, it's thanks to Joel saving her life that she's been able to experience love and friends and what is closest to a normal life. Joel gave her that possibility. And by forgiving Joel she finally has been able to forgive Abby. And most importantly, she has been able to forgive herself for being alive and not getting infected like Riley. Her life makes sense again. She has grown. And yes, things have been resolved. The ending wasn't about killing a villain (who doesn't exist by the way), it was about forgiveness. And now Ellie has all the cards in hand to play it right and really start over. This game is a masterpiece. It does have some pacing issues, the game being overstreched in some parts. But you have to bring so much of yourself into the game for it to be rewarding, it's so gratifiying. And it's amazing how such a commercial AAA game can be so bold. Just for that, it should be praised instead of being hated blindly.

Ellie spared Abby because she realized that, even if Abby was responsible for Joel's death, it was Ellie's actions who made her loose Dina and JJ and become a monster. She tortured a woman who was looking for revenge just like she was and even killed a pregnant woman. She was about to kill a protective figure to a kid like Joel was to her. She spared Abby because she learned, through the game, the cost of revenge.

@@officialsniperYT yeah but Abby had her own reason to kill Joel, and even so, she payed for it since killing him cost all of her friends their lives, and didn't bring her the closure she wanted. At the theater she realised that continuing with this vicious cycle of revenge would only bring unnecessary death and suffering so she decided to stop. By the end of the game, Ellie comes to the same conclusion: killing Abby wouldn't bring Joel back or get rid of her trauma due to what happened, instead it would only let the cycle continue having Lev essentially do the same thing she did throughout the game, which is go on a killing spree to kill Ellie, probably getting Dina or JJ killed (who by this point she lost thanks to her own decisions). The final conclusion I came to once I finished the game is that the reason Ellie decided to forgive her is because believe it or not, it's what Joel would want. He would like to see her taking care of her family and living her life to the fullest, he wouldn't want her to completely lose herself and everyone she loves over petty revenge. At the end of the day, Joel would wish for Ellie to be happy and move on. Edit: typo

Abby's part was ok in some sections but the main problem is that wasn't the game promised or advertised. They should've just made it a DLC or standalone. When you tack on the Last of Us name you have to consider the first game. If it was on its own it would've been liked a lot more but its under TLOU therefore people wanted Joel and Elly or at least more time with these characters in this present day presented. Either way in no way is Laura responsible for that. She had to put it all, including faith, into Abby and NEIL's direction because SHES AN ACTRESS NOT ABBY.

Ellie is untouchable and irreplaceable in my heart. I learned to adore Abby at some point but the game wasn't well written regarding her dad's backstory and the way the game introduces her. The constant switching in the beginning broke the pace and there wasn't much there to relate to her yet so it felt like a "WTF, get me back to Ellie right now!". Way later during Jerry's flashback, his whole arc failed to make me feel sorry for him. He has no emotional intelligence when dealing with the poor zebra, as if wiggling the wires would help the poor animal! Not only that but his demeanor towards Ellie's immunity was atrocious. She's a 14 year old, he's aware that she cannot give any type of consent and he's a mad scientist convinced that killing her is justified because MAYBE he'll be able to create a vaccine from her brain. His recording in the 1st game is more focused on becoming the next Alexander Fleming than truly studying the virus. He's an hypocrite who can't even admit that he wouldn't sacrifice Abby for a cure or a vaccine. The game clearly wants us to make us feel bad about Jerry but after this game I'm even more happy to kill him when replaying part 1. I feel sorry about Abby but Jerry was a dumb selfish hypocritical sunovabitch. Abby took that trait of his for her as well up until she started feeling responsible and caring for the siblings. But see, for Abby it made sense to be hypocritical because it was the way she self-justified her thirst for revenge and ruthlessness. Jerry? A fucking mad doctor that doesn't know when to stop because he can do no wrong. Also, how the fuck didn't the founder and leader of the fireflies not know that an immune person "had" to die at Jerry's operating table? Again, terrible writing creating some sort of near-parallel universe with the characters. Abby's campagin had two major issues for me: someone who tortures people as a stress relief (seattle day 1) cannot possibly feel empathy (seattle day 2 onwards); Her sex scene with Owen happened after both of them fighting about people that were either killed from them or by them. That's better than viagra! I love the game to but it wasn't as well writen as it should've been. Ellie's campaign wasn't perfect either but had a lot less writting flays than Abby's.

As someone who legit hates Abby, I do not put any of that on Laura Bailey because she is literally doing what Neil has asked of her. As someone who has written things for other people to say, they will often ask me "How do you want this line read?" and I would dictate that. Ultimately, the problem with Abby as a character is three-fold imo: - Her motives mirror Ellie, which doesn't create any tension between them. Joel killed Abby's dad, Abby kills Joel (Ellie's father figure) so it just becomes a game of "fuck you, no fuck you", and I'm naturally going to side with Ellie because I already know her and love her character. Instead, they could've played up the fact that she wanted to find a cure and Joel ruined that, rather than this very bland motive that too closely mirrors Ellie. Or better still, have Ellie know her motive to actually have some friction between them as opposed to the "fuck you, no fuck you" we get. - Abby's murder of Joel was so sadistic, and so contrived, that it made it impossible to like or relate to her. Combined with her physique that was too much really - she's bigger than most of the men around her. If she had a leaner appearance, maybe make her incredibly tall and lean like a runner that would work, and instead of them taking Joel to the Ski-Lodge like a lamb to the slaughter, they have Ellie, Dina and Jesse rescue her and bring her to Jackson, she finds Joel and she shoots him in his bed after emotionally saying "You ruined my life" or something to that regard. - I don't think the game takes a neutral stance on Ellie and Abby. To me, it seems that the game, through its structure, and the framing of the characters, as well as Neil Druckmann saying on his own Instagram that Abby is his favourite character in the game, that Abby is the hero of the story and Ellie is the villain. That's more of an issue with Ellie than Abby admittedly, but it's still a problem that compounds her. IMO, I hope there's a TLOU3. In my head, what I'd like is kind of an odd-couple story where you could have Ellie, Abby and the other main characters of Dina, Tommy and Lev, all united against the same enemy - say a group of humans who are kind of dicks - and they are all at each others throats as they're forced to rely on each other but still hate each other because of what happens in this game, with Lev acting as an arbiter in harder times - maybe Lev and Ellie can build a friendship through PTSD from the events of this game. Just an idea I guess haha
