Twitter leftists are so devoid of humor that they don't understand irony or sarcasm anymore. When JKR says "Everyone who buys this game agrees with me politically" she's obviously trolling and mocking the woke who really think that way. She has zero involvement in the game. @Theo Bell I said that because these people think JK Rowling will feel bad if this game does poorly lol. Or that she'll feel invigorated to become even more bigoted if it does well.. That's what I mean by it doesn't affect her. She doesn't care at all and wouldn't change her opinions or do anything different even if the boycott succeeded. Plus the royalties from this game is a droplet in the ocean of her wealth. Even if she lost 100% of Hogwarts Legacy money she wouldn't notice it.

I work in the video game industry. These people don't know how anything works and it's really frustrating because their arguments are sound only if you accept their flawed logic. Video game developers are not contractors, that would be ridiculous. Developers are always employees because they do most of the heavy lifting as far as making the game and a talented dev is worth their weight in gold. Artists tend to be contractors usually from another company who is hired by the studio. Video game testers are contractors because testing is easy work that anyone can do, but the process of debugging a modern game is a herculean task requiring many hours of labor digging through thousands of lines of code for mistakes. The success of failure of the game determines the studio's ability to continue producing games, to expand their workforce, and create jobs. J.K. Rowling has already gotten paid by the studio for the license. That's how licensing works. The sales are just helping the studio recoup the loss from paying her as well as all of it's employees and of course make a profit for the studio.
@akuakkk1908
@akuakkk1908 Жыл бұрын
Yup... Unless JK rowling is the developer herself, she would only make money through the contract from licensing. At best she would get more money from royalty according to contract (if it were written), but money from sales would flow mostly to the studio. Not a game developer myself but had been to such community. So i might be off though in understanding

@@gooseberree4955 well... That's an insane argument (though theoretically sound). Punish the game dev as an example for other who work with JK in the future. I don't know how you'd get sympathy from average non-political aligned individuals if they hear such reasoning.

@@akuakkk1908 Is it really punishing the game developer's though? If I am a developer or a game studio and I work for or get hired by Destiny to create a game he wants. I would very much be aware that he could say something that people may seek to cancel him over, for the umpteenth time, and my studio or work as a developer may suffer because of it. I am making a calculated risk given he has a big platform and could boost our studio or he could also do something controversial and set us back. These are calculations made across all industries. Now, it is possible a developer had no say on who their studio partners with but I don't think they would be shocked by people viewing their work favorably or negatively given who the partner is. What about people wanting to cancel their Netflix over the recent mix up with Netflix wanting to stop password sharing? Why weren't people saying, you are punishing the developers who had no say in this decision. It is wrong to want to cancel you Netflix account. I feel like framing it like this will never allow you to stop supporting some company as there will always be some employee that had no say in some controversial decision or action by others.

Because boycotting a game they were likely never really going to play is easy. Boycotting Amazon, Uber and Nestle is hard. And they'd rather take the easy option, then pretend it's equal or better to the hard option. This is pervasive. Exact same thing is found in dating, prioritizing easy, low-commitment hookups and then acting like they're just as fulfilling/important as a hard to maintain relationship. Exact same thing is found in work, prioritizing easy counter jobs and demanding pay rises as if they were harder life saving roles. Exact same thing is found in the absurd mental illness circus, easily claiming you have mental illnesses for attention without the hardship of actually having them. The whole trans debate, I won't say it again, but you know. Cancelling people, just easily getting them removed instead of the tough task of fleshing out your thoughts and opinions to defend them properly. Some people say it's just laziness, but I think it's more actively anti-effort than that. A lazy man works a hard job if he must. These people would sooner not work the job at all and try to coast on sympathy donations/lawsuit money for getting fired from said job.

@@User71956 That’s not always true, there are plenty of examples where controversy caused a lose in money. Hell you could argue even the projects that did make money despite their controversies could’ve made more if they didn’t have said controversy. So the idea of controversy equally money isn’t true, so how would it be common sense? Take 6 days in Fallujah, that game literally didn’t get made cause of it’s controversy. The route of creating a controversy to drum up money for a game or other project is a MASSIVE gamble, it rarely works. I’m sure you can probably give a few examples of where it does, but their are hundreds of thousand if not millions of projects in tons of different fields such as movies, video games, books, tv shows, anime, comics, music, and art every year. To point to a few select cases and say that controversy creates money as common sense seems really cherry picking. People are shocked when projects try to go the controversy to drum up attention and money route because it’s so damn risky and rarely ever works. It’s clearly not impossible, but it’s extremely far from the norm, it’s more risky then taking the money for said project and gambling it all a Roulette Table. Side point too, do you think this was planned? Pretty sure JK Rowling has long held here views and was vocal about it well before this game was ever even an idea. So how is this controversy supposed to be something to drum up money for this game?

I did some research and The term TERF has been around for a minute. It turns out that EILI5 feminism basically split in the 80'son the coattails of the gay liberation movement between TERF's and the social constructionist theory of feminism. Succinctly feminists coined the phrase gender to challenge biological essentialism to overcome the limitations imposed upon them by society based on their immutable sexual differences. And this was just a fun play on words until transsexualism literally get renamed to a disorder of "gender." Feminism in general harbored a resentment for men, but the TERFS wanted to like get rid of men altogether and have a world run by...women? I don't think they thought that one through. But they scoffed at the idea that men could become women, which was literally all transgenderism was at this point: a bunch of gay men who wanted tits. It's worth noting that feminism was inherently a progressive movement at this point, and so transgenderism had to be adopted by feminists by default mostly to advance the feminist agenda, but this does not mean transgenderism is any less about gay erasure than it ever was or has been anywhere else in the world... See this is where transgenderism gets conflated with traditional progressive values from before the millennia, because yes feminists weaponized gender to fight the patriarchy, but they never intended it to open the gates to men turning into women. all the feminists kind of had a problem with this, and this is where it gets very fascinating: the more regressive ant--gay faction (mostly TERFS) of feminism actually commandeered the new wave of feminism because it satisfied their desire for gay erasure, AND and so that's why today you see this issue so strongly divided along the lines of conservatism and liberalism, but also why some of this transgender nonsense is much too our confusion so ostensibly regressive. By no coincidence does this split coincide with America entering into the unofficial post-religious age. And so it is that feminism TODAY is largely the liberal social constructionist view of feminism which embraces the trans identification of men because they think the progress of feminism is contingent on trans acceptance. And that's kind of where we are at with the 2nd wave of "TERF's: it's the pejorative being ascribed to all of the women who really just think women exist. and I think the reason for this reemergent brand of feminism, which is definitely conservative by definition, is the skewing towards GIRLS becoming victimized by transgenderism and becoming suicidal. and that's why increasingly transgenderism is a dangerous radical movement, because even the social constructionists are being disenfranchised and what's left is post modernist extremists who don't care about child safety or well being and idk think biological men can breastfeed babies that as far as we know are only supposed to have the breastmilk of biological women but hey those people are radical with a capitol R

BUT a lot of people who are advocating for them are advocating for allowing treatment to be pursued early, whereas being gay happens and does not require anything (or rather it only requires the absence of L's like conversion). So you could still pull off an ok contrast... but I don't think you did that. Also I could imagine people wanting to boycott something because the creator is homophobic or something.
@jacksyoutubechannel4045
@jacksyoutubechannel4045 Жыл бұрын
I think the problem is that gay activism crept from "two consenting adults in the privacy of their own bedroom" to, as they say, "bake the cake, bigot," in less than two decades. Thus conservatives were _very_ skeptical that "just let us use the bathrooms" from trans people was going to take the same path, but instead of slow-walking it, it just went _full_ mask off in the last few years. I think with the trans thing, it's really is almost unavoidable. Even if one does not subscribe to Blanchard's taxonomy of trans women, he objectively observes a feature of about half of trans women that is relevant here. He notes that there are a subset of trans women who become not hurt, but _very_ angry if one does not recognize and affirm that they are women (like what happened in the viral GameStop/"ma'am" video). These trans women are especially sensitive to not being treated as though they are biological women. If half of the group being advocated for has this feeling, it stands to reason that they're going to *insist* on affirmation in all areas of life, and that it's going to feel quite authoritarian. There's a _really_ interesting book (which is out of print, but great if you can get your hands on it) called, _After the Ball: How America Will Conquer Its Fear and Hatred of Gays in the '90s._ It's written by a neuropsychologist and an ad executive (both gay rights activists), on how best to persuade the country to accept gay people; and from this side of the '90s, it's particularly fascinating, because it details almost exactly what ended up happening. The book is actually particularly harsh on the transgender and pedophile communities for trying to throw their lot in with the plight of gay people, because the authors seem to sense the same desire to impose their will in a way that's off-putting to the public. (Some activists say now that this book wasn't influential in order to discredit it, but that's patently false. The book even suggests the use of "homophobia" instead of "anti-gay" because they hoped the more clinical language would be perceived as less judgemental from the gay community.)

@@HansWurst-gm2rx Oh yeah, I’ve done my share of piracy back in the day. I finally stopped when I was caught doing it in college. Thankfully I was only given a warning, but it scared me straight. I’m criticizing the hoops they’re teleporting through as it relates to the game & LGBTQ. Pirating a video game to spite the creator of the source material & claiming it’s in spirit of supporting the game developers is a dishonest crock of shit. They double down on calling it “ethical consumption” by likening it to someone who commits theft out of desperation to feed themselves & their families. It’s fallacious, disingenuous, and virtue signaling. They’re just scared to admit they want to play the game but don’t want to be called a bigot. If buying the game is truly the “litmus test” of being transphobic then stealing it won’t change that. I’m hard pressed to believe a TRA only cares about hitting JKR’s bank account if they’re hinging someone’s moral character on whether or not they remove HP from their lives. There’s no such thing as ethical consumption here, they’re breaking their arm with that reach.

People should be more chill, especially if it is about art. Let everyone decide for themselves if they want to enjoy a pc game and dont railroad people with political shit into a boycott. I just wanted to point out, that pirating is not as bad as some make it out to be (yet it is still wrong). In our specific case here one could apply mens rea aswell. Biden's campaign won on the fact he was defeating Trump, not that anyone actually wanted specifically him (I certainly didnt). Even today one of the biggest concerns Democrats have is the preservation of democracy, so Biden excoriating MAGA supporters who deny the election is a way Biden can remind democrats and anyone who doesnt wanna be f**ked over by another coup d'etat (that actually works next time) to go and vote before their rights are taken away. There really isnt a way to reasonably talk to people who automatically think your side "stole" the elections and arent willing to listen to basic facts. Id argue it is effective to drum up support by playing up how evil the opposition is to motivate the democratic core and hopefully whatever independents have enough of a brain to see Trump for what he is. Maybe theres a more nuanced take, but to say its ineffective and not a valid political tactic I think is incorrect.

Was Jan 6 bad? yes of course it was a very bad thing, but having people tout it as the "worst attack on our democracy ever" have completely forgotten history and the fact that the Senate was previously BOMBED by extremist lefties. Some guys wandering around and crapping on desks takes a DISTANT backseat to that in my book. No, Jan 6 is the bogeyman that the left will regret making their primary focus because we're already seeing mainstream backlash from the one sided coverage and investigations of the events, and it is not looking good. If you honestly want to defeat the rightoids, then pearl clutching about the singular right wing riot of note is not the way to go. People in glass houses and all that. Also, I don't know if you've been following the Kari Lake situation, but the fact that litigation has continued this long and the purported findings after they were given a chance to investigate the signatures and do proper discovery may embolden the conspiracy theorists further, because it might not actually be just a theory. No, I think the dems are going down a terrible path if they want to even have a chance of winning in 2024 and they need to get to grass roots and quick, because the economy is in the toilet and no amount of "but muh jobs numbers" is going to make people not look at the significantly increased grocery bill. @@d76458 it depends on how you want to be looked at. Some musicians and stuff were encouraging their songs to be downloaded as long as the the songs were in lesser quality forms. Than the main product. And way back in the day a huge amount of the PC devs would encourage more PC circles to play their games to promote their brand as game devs. Some people like the exposure. And those who know they have a good product in like the top ten demand know they can enforce their trademarks. You look scummy as Sony or Disney whoever it was that made a family remove a spiderman they put on a dead child's gravestone. It doesn't mean there's some broad law that says it's ok to copy someones work. Im not some moral high roader though, I lived through Napster and Limewire along with bit torrenting. I only bought about half the music I grabbed from those bands. And the games I got were from broken discs and stuff. For the recoup in games I saw was when you could go to Lan parties and people were excited to share games they were already playing. Which I saw some people go buy the real games after. Like half life and counterstrike were big ones. Along with quake and unreal tournament. My stance is you get it if you want it. As like a sample, and buy it if you like it. If you never intend to buy a game you like playing I feel you are then stealing it or not giving credit where it was made. But this is only my stance for music and games. For things like programs and movies I'll call it stealing off the bat and something people should try to reduce.

Idk, I could give more examples, but he was being rediculous a lot, lol.

i mean JK Rowling seems like she kinda sucks on a personal level but the actual problem here is how unbelievably limited our political imaginations are. this is just another example of how we genuinely think that consuming the correct products and publically denouncing the incorrect products is not only an act of political engagement, but the only act of political engagement that's possible - it's incredibly depressing.

You keep “lol it’s Twitter” when Oreily was talking about this 15 years ago and it is unequivocally mainstream talking points. This is the issue debating these topics with children like Erin. She hasn’t seen how fast this stuff has transitioned to popularity and just how loud the vocal minority has become. This is why buying Hogsworth as a form of payback is working, because these “just Twitter” lunatics are controlling mainstream discourse, media, entertainment, and our institutions.

@MsHojat Жыл бұрын
That would be a really odd take for her to have/say. Seems quite doubtful although I suppose it's still possible since people do sometimes say dumb stuff. For that matter I think that argument would bite Rowling in the foot because that seems to imply that people don't care about the quality of her works, only/mostly of her opinions. Obviously that's false. Perhaps she said that _some_ people are purchasing it specifically to support her, although even if that's true (which is certainly likely), I would think that there are better ways to support her than that.
@TheSwamphobbit
@TheSwamphobbit Жыл бұрын
@@MsHojat yeah, that was my general thought. When I had a look, I saw that she has said that 90% of letters she gets are from people who say they agree with her opinions but are afraid to speak up. She also tweeted in response to someone asking how she sleeps at night knowing a whole bunch of people will never read her books and her reply was she looks at her latest royalty check. Neither of which I think proves the point that they want to make. Some are arguing that it isn't financial but cultural capital that we are providing to her, but I would argue that given how much the companies (Portkey Games and WB Games) are trying to distance themselves from JK I am not sure that she has this huge capital to push people. I would almost argue that by complaining about this (or at the very least, in the method that people are complaining) you are giving JK the cultural capital, but that is a rabbit hole of an argument to have.

As someone who works in the film and game industry. If a game or film doesn't sale the studio might not have enough money to get their next project. They might fire people to not have to pay them and make the ones that are staying work harder to be able to produce the next film or game. Like avatar need to make more than 2 billion for Avatar 4 to be able to be produced. Those people worked hard for this game. Paying for this game isn't for JK but for the love all those employees, more than 500 people here. Avalanche is a great studio and a lot of their employees had and still have a bad time with the social pressure they are receiving.

Absolutely! There are a lot up front costs associated with games and movies with not much in the way of return until they come out. They are inherently risky ventures where one of two failures could easily doom some companies, negatively impacting the lives of everyone involved and those close to them. The impact of such thefts deserves more than the casual disregard many extend to them.

"If you have a sibling that's extremely racist and you just released a brand new song that you hope to get royalties/payment from, is it perfectly okay for people to steal from you because of your sibling's racist opinions?" Cause it seemed like they tried to make the argument that it will affect the developers; aka people who have no affiliation to JK's viewpoints. Theft is theft, and I'm sure if those two girls had it happen to them, they'd have a different opinion. They constantly have to make it morally "just" in order to accept the idea of theft despite being so okay with it. Whether or not this game succeeds, it hardly affects JK.

The problem with these ridiculous examples like a person starving or feeding a baby, is that the person making the decision is making a choice between the lesser of two evils. It means that both choices were bad, but one was less bad.

@@ade8890 yep, you're correct... I think. When choosing between the lesser evil, it is considered moral to do so. Say, war is bad but if there are people waging war against you then it is morally correct to stand up and fight even if it mean countless people would die and suffer. You can't say that it is good, it simply mean justified. As it is then based on conditions hence when a better option surface/appeared only then would the action be considered immoral again when it is continued. War stops being justified when the aggressing party ceased to be a threat or offer a better solution (like opening dialogue option). It is to my believe that despite we as human share similar or even the same value at times. Morality isn't universal and instead subjective even if it can be objectively analyzed.

It may be semantic, however i believe there's a difference between the attitude of eager enthusiasm 'they're picking a fight so i am going to blow their brain out' compared to soft denial 'i don't have much choice, i have to fight back'. In both case, it is still the right thing to do to fight back. However, the former disregard that what they're doing still fall within the bound of evil even if he had a right to do so. Hence why i prefer the term justified when taking the lesser of the two evil rather than moral or right thing to do to indicate that it is still a bad thing, it's just that it can't be helped/you can't reasonably expect better.
