In a political landscape that was dominated by "slick" politicians who couldn't give a straight answer to save their lives, his "honesty" seemed like a nice change of pace. I think the theory went, "a good business person knows to surround themself with people much smarter and more competent in order to succeed." I'm also for helping the poor but it has to end somewhere otherwise everyone will become poor instead. The same issues exist in Belgium. I pay 33% taxes. So for every 1000 euro earned, I give 330 euro to the country and that is just on my paycheck. There are taxes on everything as well like 6% on essentials like food, 21% on luxury goods like electricity (YES, electricity is luxurious here ;-) ), ... But when you get ill, you pay next to nothing to the doctors, hospitals etc. This I like because that means that at least everyone will be as healthy as possible if they commit to it. But on the other hand, a lot of people from other countries know this and get an operation for free here. While I wouldn't mind this if we were all superrich, we cannot support this kind of exploitation. We also pay people who can't work or do not find a job. However we are making the wagegap between a job and minimal wage bigger to entice people getting a job or keeping a low level job. We also increased monitoring by a lot. I'm all for social services like that but they need to be balanced and controlled. We have tons of social services (the US has almost none compared to Belgium let alone France). But you have to throw out the people who are not invested or just profit from it w/o wanting to give anything back. As a side note: I agree with your first post. Most politicians just shout empty promisses or are using issues that aren't there. I just disagreed with that one line I quoted.
