Learn how to jump rope like a pro as Everlast Nutrition's expert fitness trainer Mike Gales gives you some great tips to make Jumping rope a fun and effective exercise that destroys calories.
Jumping rope can be a fun and effective way to lose weight and get into fantastic shape. The main barrier to people trying out this great form of cardio is that they feel that they can't do it. Well in this video Mike Gales will break down how to jump rope like a pro.
He will explain which type of rope to buy. How to build momentum to start jumping rope. How to continue jumping rope and not becoming prematurely exhausted. Finally, he will explain an easy way to restart the trope if you miss a step or get tangled.
Jumping rope is great for athletes as well especially boxers as it teaches you to become light on your feet and to keep your feet moving.
Millions of people have watched these videos and found it to be beneficial. I hope that it helps you as well.

What do you Suggest to avoid extremely sore calves, everytime I skip my Calves are in an insane amount of pain for days

@@evjimz8460 Stretch the hell out of them. The stairs work really well. Go all the way up on the balls of your feet. Hold for 5-10 seconds. Slowly go all the way down so.your heels are well below the step. Hold for 5-10 seconds. That's one rep. Haha...yeah. Start with 10 reps. You can also try foam rolling. It may be too intense for you though.

Update...once I started using a shorter rope and jumping in a secluded part of the gym on the padded workout floor, instead of the wood floor, it became much easier to get going and very little pain on the knees and ankles. I'm now able to jump 70-80 times in 30 seconds. I then rest for 30 seconds. Sometimes I can rest for only 15 seconds if I'm hydrated, fueled, and had a good night's sleep. I do this workout for 10-15 rounds. The 1" to 1 1/2" jumping is no problem now. Like.anything else that's challenging, it takes lots of practice.

for your rhythm, i recommend you to just do one handed side swing and timing your jump with the rope hitting the floor. I've tried it and it worked really well (one handed side swing is really easy)

Great instruction Sir!!Now I understand why people swing their ropes before a workout...I have seen in a lot of pictures and previews and videos people jump so high that this takes a lot of effort and pressurizes the knees...I am now assured about the proper height thanks to you.....

I am teaching children how to jump rope. And these tips are exact, what I am teaching👍👍👍 We start with beginners only with a few jumps, maybe one to three just to learn the right technique. Then we increase step by step. Most important: Rotation from the wrists, not from the arms and jumping only a little bit, just to clear the rope.

@WazigeLogica
@WazigeLogica 3 жыл бұрын
Yup that's what usually happens when you share your plans! It takes out the momentum and you end up not doing it! Shoulda made the video first and THEN came and told us about it. I say this by experience, no judgement. But this is just another example of something I been learning: keep your plans and ideas to yourself untill you have put them in action.

Hi I first got to your videos through your hand wrapping vid as I had bought some Everlast Flexcool wraps. Anyway I went with your vid in the end although I soon realised there were many vids of how to wrap your hands slightly differently from each other generally speaking from what I saw. I think I know the main things when wrapping your hands and the other things maybe more personal preference / variations however. I got this from some of the different vids. I must say I have been very impressed with your vids though and I’ve started looking at a range of your beginner boxing type ones and sometimes touching on a few maybe intermediate things as well. You seem to have just about everything - you’re a cool guy but also with quite a lot of knowledge and experience on quite a wide range of things. You also seem a really good coach - you explain things reasonably simply, very clearly and also sometimes explaining some of the finer points without going into too much detail or going too far off point which would be easy to do. Also you keep your vids to a good length - not too long or short which can hold someone’s interest perhaps more effectively. In my opinion you seem to be able to convey things from your brain to someone else’s and over a video in a way that can be understood. I think that is the essence of good teaching and coaching. I had been skipping with both feet jumping off the ground at the same time for about 1.5 years. I had heard about other methods and particularly alternating feet which I wanted to do. I had tried it on a number of occasions and mostly without any kind of reasonable and increasing success. I watched this on another coaches video who is a good coach but maybe hadn’t quite hit this point home in a way that I could understand. You did exactly that! What got it into my brain was that you explained that although alternating feet is just that, both feet are still actually leaving the ground, just one higher than the other I think. To me that was great teaching and coaching to the point where not only can I do alternating feet skipping which is a significant achievement compared to where I was before with it, I can now do it reasonably well and with some ok speed. I can also do some variations of this that was on your video which was really good and also another skipping method. That’s all been basically down to you. Like I said I’ve been very impressed with your vids and coaching. A lot of my family were teachers although I think all have retired now. Maybe I can spot good coaching as some maybe in my blood? One thing that I thought I should add is that I have found more success with skipping only with my socks on. Perhaps the rope catches on your feet more if you have trainers on. I think I may have a point here - I have seen some boxers skip and their footwear is quite slim and streamlined against their feet which would fit in with this if that is a possible reason for them although it could also be perhaps helpful for footwork and less restrictive. There would be less support here though and partly why some of them are a boot kind of style? The only other thing I think I should mention is that I also use a thin piece of carpet for skipping on. I think this may extend the life of the rope in comparison to it hitting concrete / a hard floor etc. I also bought two skipping ropes - one leather and another a faster rope. I thought I’d get them both from some research that I’d done and also the rope I had previously was a leather one. However more recently I’ve been doing more skipping using the faster rope as going a bit faster has been better I think although that has taken time and practice. It’s a pity really - it’s a really cool solid leather rope that hasn’t actually had a lot of use. I think I’m still going to stick with the faster rope though, it just seems better when doing faster skipping I think. The leather one maybe better for slower skipping.

 Anyway I’m sorry about the very long post if you or anyone else could be bothered enough to read and I’d understand if anyone didn’t. Thank you so much again!

Thank you so much for the awesome comment. I’m glad the video was able to help. Like you I also prefer the speed rope to the leather rope. I also liked your idea of using a piece of carpet I think that would definitely extend the life of the rope as compared to some concrete. Thank you again for taking the time to watch😎😎😎😎😎

@@fightyourwayfit Hi I'm sorry about the late reply - I don't think it came up on my notifications. I didn't think anyone would be bothered to read it and understandably so. I tried to split it up into paragraphs but still. I actually got the carpet idea from a Uk boxing supplier who seemed pretty cool as these things go. The piece of carpet I use is quite a thin piece as these things go I think. You're a credit to KZbin as I think you may have helped quite a lot of people effectively - not everyone always thanks people for their vids including myself and probably quite a lot of the time. You had to be thanked though because of all you have done with the excellent quality of videos and coaching.

Question: Amazon has an Everlast speed rope that's listed at 11' long. I'm 5-11. Can I trim/adjust it to a length that's right for me? Thanks. ()BTW, I love these tutorials. I've never tried boxing training, but working in a few hours of it a week following these how-to's has supercharged my resistance and cardio workouts.)

I thank you for watching and for commenting: ) The one that I'm using is this one; www.amazon.com/Everlast-P00000384-Speed-Rope-11/dp/B014R29IUO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1495199862&sr=8-1&keywords=everlast+speed+rope and it is 11' long and I am also 5-11 and 1/2. and the length is pretty good. Yet if you find it too long you could slide one handle down and trim it by whatever you need, tie a knot and slide the handle back up....and easy way to short the rope is to tie a knot just below each handle and that will shorten the rope a little bit.

Can you please tell me ideal length of rope? thanks
@fightyourwayfit
@fightyourwayfit 7 жыл бұрын
Thant will always depend on the length of the person's legs, arms, and their height. Try keeping your feet at about shoulder width and then step on the rope with both feet. The rope should still be long enough so that you can grasp the handles at about the height of your hips. If the rope is too long you can try tying a knot on either side to shorten it.

What all these "How to jump rope" videos for beginners don't tell you is how to not step on the rope. Or how to co-ordinate your jumps with the speed of the rope. Isn't that basically the art of jumping rope, to not step on it?
@carl1095
@carl1095 7 жыл бұрын
I think I just figured out. The key is to keep your feet either directly below or slightly in front of your body. You do that by keeping your knees bent, as pointed out in the video. That way the rope won't get entangled in between your feet. Just did that now and had the best jump rope workout ever after doing it wrong for years. So try focusing on the position of your feet, slightly in front of or below your body and knees bent. Doing it this way I also didn't have to lift my feet as high as before. Feeling much less strain on my knees than before.

you had ur body behind for years? I don't get it. I'm starting out too.

You are exactly right, I don't know why I didn't mention that in the video but it is so much easier to clear the rope with by bending your knees and keeping your body perpendicular to the floor or keeping your weight slightly to the rear as you just slightly leaning back. If you are leaning forward then becomes very difficult indeed. I'm glad that you made this comment, as many people are probably wondering the exact same thing. Thank you : )

Excellent video. Thanks for making it . I'm gonna try to utilize everything you mentioned. One question. My garage floor is cement. It looks like your jumping on some sort of padded surface. Any recommendations for padded surfaces? I don't want to screw up my feet, ankles and what have you.
@fightyourwayfit
@fightyourwayfit 5 жыл бұрын
You’re making a very wise move to get some padding for the floor. When I was young, I often played outdoor basketball on cement and my knees would take a pounding. In this video, I was in a gym that had special flooring for gymnastics ... but at home, in my gym, I also have a cement floor. I bought some black 4ft X 3ft rubber utility mats that they sell at most hardware stores (like home hardware, Ace, or even Walmart) they were 20$ each. ( I think they are about just under an inch thick) You could get away with only buying 2 of them for jumping rope and they will be well worth the investment.
