230’s are such money pits. Fixing anything on the ABC suspension is usually $$$. Last SL65 I worked on needed the line that requires the engine to be dropped out. Hard pass on a wrecked one.

Yessss! I have been watching the channel for over a year now. I have been looking at SL's for the last two. Specifically the 600 or the 65! Can't beat the V12!!. Haven't pulled the trigger for fear of the unknown. Not as mechanicly inclined as some. However there are not many current videos at all on these vehicles, especially in the details you provide as a once mercedes technician, your insite is invaluable! I look forward to the notes on "what too look for" when purchasing these vehicles. Already know the ABS / ABC up to 06 when they fixed it. If you don't get that one, have to at least find a 55 Amg for the channel!

Yessss, join the SL65 family! Mine is silver on red, and has the glass Vario roof as well. These cars are worth every penny, especially when you add a little Renntech love! It's an honest 200mph+ car for pocket change compared to other cars of the caliber.

Yep lol. I've been doing that forever anytime the key is in it. Only takes locking keys in the car once or twice to get you started. Its automatic for me now, dont even think about it

Good luck getting that beauty! An older guy in my town has a silver one and is constantly cruising around in it, proud as punch. Also, my gf hit a tree in my Ram sport and messed up the giant bumper cover much worse than that. The body shop couldn't find a new one because of "Cash For Clunkers" destroying parts, but they were able to get it fixed perfectly and it's held up fine.

Nice! I have an 05 SL500, immaculate! Just get the regular Amg bumper, fender and door from the generic SL, the abc strut mount is what I would worry about it could be twisted at the top which could be a no no. Otherwise you could convert to non abc coil overs. Good luck! Go for it

I have a SL500 myself. The ABC is great, but expensive to fix, even if you do all the work yourself. E.g. one strut (rebuilt) is 900 Euro. The roof hydraulics tend to leak and are a lot of work to fix. The tank often has loose parts danging inside. Rust underneath the rear window seal is kind of typical. It hints to a leaking trunk seal. A defective spark-coil on the v12 equals 1200 Euro for a replacement. But: Great car! As long as it runs, it is so much fun!

Seem to have such similar taste in cars! I have E320 CDI modified, E55 with E63 bumper and very similar mods, and I have SL65 that you are looking into getting ... difference being you take your cars so far so quickly and so many more of them .. it's great! I do hope you get the SL65! One of my first mods was to get the Smart Top module. It makes the top so easy to put up and down. First repair I had to do was ABC line on the front from the hydraulic pump that was leaking. Gotta love the sound of the V12 with the top down. This one is going to be a keeper for me ... rarer V12 convertible that Mercedes don't make any more.

First of all...i really love your channel for the tech info, your passion, and your stand up attitude with your video audience. Noticed you are looking at the SL65...I have a 2006...just wondering if you got it if you were going to keep the suspension as is or go with another option? I don't even know even if there is an aftermarket option that is $ feasible. I know the SL55 have non ABC conversion but I haven't seen anything for the 65. BTW...i love mine...I've had it for 11 years and have 32k miles on it...good luck on SL65! PS...i haven't been on MBWorld for forever but my handle was AMGfan...my SL65 builds (redid it twice...once a murdered blackout project...second was the wide body conversion).

I saw this sl65 as well, but those repairs add up quick on these things. The OEM 65 bumper can be found for around 1,800-3k or can go with the aftermarket duraflex copy but fitment won’t be perfect. The p30 pack on the r230 sl55’s also came with the same front bumper. To have this thing back and proper you will spend a good $5-7k to do it right. Not to mention all the surprises you’ll find when you start taking the body parts off.

A friend of mine let me use his SL65 last summer and I called it the batmobile. What a nice car, absolutely loved it..it was really quick,one thing I noticed is that when you put the transmission in manual mode and shifted it that way it was quicker.. maybe that also puts the ecu in a different map??

Yes! One of my all time favorites from Mercedes. My boss bought one brand new and I was lucky enough to get to drive it around for an hour one day as we were moving all his various cars around. Since this was shot back in the winter, I'm sure by now you are already driving and enjoying it.

All Mercedes-Benz SL55 cars with the P030 Performance Package have that same, exact bumper. The P030 Performance Package also adds the same front/rear brake calipers and rotors as the SL65, among other things. Anytime the rear AGM battery is depleted (below 11.9 V) no 'convenience features' will function until the accessory battery is recharged. You could have just left the motor running for a few minutes and tried again. The trickiest part of the VARIO convertible roof is not the roof itself: it is the nearly undocumented and unfixable 'Load Assist' / 'Easy Pack' "feature" which will stop you from being able to put anything into or take anything out of your trunk when spuriously inoperative. God help you if you run into difficulties with the b.s. 'Load Assist' issue.

I live in the United Kingdom and drive a 3.2 Mercedes SLK and the rust below the rear window appears to be quite common.
