I've actually always liked this Zone. It's absolutely stuffed with Rings, it's honeycombed with side passages and secret areas, there are loads of Giant Rings to find, Act 1 vertically loops (so you can do the warp glitch), the music is chill, and it has one of the cooler bosses in the series. The only thing I don't like is that it takes a long time to get through the Zone and it's somewhat easier to get lost than usual.

The theme of this stages seems to be some deceptive beautiful ruins that are bobby trapped everywhere. There are spikes everywhere, most of the batniks have spikes, spike balls on chains, etc. The allure of all the rings on this stage is the allure to set off the traps? lol that's my best guess.

I think it's pretty obvious that the theme of this Zone is ancient, pseudo-classical ruins. It's one of several ruins-based Zones in the Genesis Sonic games, including Marble, Labyrinth, Aquatic Ruin, Hydrocity (maybe), Sandopolis, Hidden Palace (maybe), and Sky Sanctuary Zones. A lot of the others combine another level theme with it, but this is a common theme in Sonic. Also, spikes. Along with having more Rings, this level has more spikes than anywhere else.

I know I am 11 years late and I don’t know if anyone’s said it but I’m pretty sure this level is supposed to be themed around stuff like Mayan temples, and is like a mix between marble (duh) and aquatic ruin zone. The red dot thing should be obvious Maybe the “oil” is actually mud due to it being a wetland?

Oh, and the power-ups you can get at the end of Act 1 appear based on where the sign lands. For example, defeat Angel Island Zone Act 1's boss on the far right side of the screen and just let the sign land there... you always get a Bubble Shield. Then you can bounce the sign up again before it settles, and try for something else.

Marble Garden is the Mystic Cave Zone of Sonic 3 (hard, lots of spiky/crushing obstacles, hidden badniks, nearly identical boss)

It's specific PLACES where it hits that gives you powerups. Sometimes when it lands you can see the other boxes underground between blades of grass.

you see the reason why the powerups appear has to do with the angle that the sign lands at, if you can get it at the right angle it will submit a powerup to you

The boxes show up if the sign lands at certain *spots* on the floor. If you turn one of the layers off in an emulator, you can see where the boxes are.
