I don’t know anything but my block letter. I bought my 5150 September 1993 (made June 1993). Honestly it really did change much when I changed out the original tubes. I turn 50 soon got it when I was 20. I will never forget the salesman telling me not to buy that “Junk”. No one was gonna play those. I still have my original slant cab to. ( I will say the cab is not the best). I am glad they brought back the look. Here’s to another 30 with my amp. 😁

I'm good I have the 5150 212 combo that the man himself used in clubs designed by Eddie and James Brown..I respect foreign instrument and amp builders the ones working their ass off for almost nothing.. I just don't want my money spent on foreign gear is all. A new amp with new parts may sound better for a good long time until they start to age caps transformers tubes etc vs a used one ..but I'm sticking with the one I bought at release .and least we not forget if these amps start to die young and become problematic ..well only time will tell

I almost bought a brand new 5150 half stack in 1995 for $1,000. 5150s were really inexpensive back then. I now own a block letter head and I LOVE IT sooo much!!!!

I picked up a used block letter in 1994 for $250 lol. I still have it and use it. Fantastic amp, built like a tank. I’ve only ever changed tubes. Maybe I should have it serviced or something but it’s working fine.

New one sounds surprisingly good. I have had like 9-10 through the years, 4 of them block letter and I don’t buy into the block letter thing. They are definitely not better sounding in any significant way. If you directly compare several block letters and several signatures I bet you’d find an none of them sound exactly the same. They were built for so many years that the components changed based on cost and availability. It’s not like the dual rectifiers where they actually changed the circuit multiple times, 5150 through modern 6505 is the same circuit. I sold one of my block letters for $450 in the early 2000s😂

Correct. Looking at it another way. The average difference between most 5150s and 6505s is less than the differences between random individuals block letters and random individual signatures. All in all, though, they’re generally the same concept.

The new amp likely sounded better because it was dialed to be twice as loud as the old one. Also you setup the knobs to be exactly the same, which means you dialed them with your eyes and not your ears, so the differences could be as simple as the natural variance in pot manufacturing tolerances, which are "in spec" as far as 10% in either direction, so any two pots can be up to 20% different at the same spot on the dial (and the fact that one was turned up way louder which our brains always interpret as better).

he level matched them in post, though. Also, at the clip in the beginning, both amps have pre and post gain set the same. If both amps are in the roughly 100 to 120 W range, the difference won't be much, as the main differences in volume will come out around the 4 to 7 range on post gain, and anything above 8 usually just drives the power tubes more and adds more compression.

responding to your bit at 11:50, but they do have the Invective. Every feature you asked for in a modern 6505 exists in the Invective, and if you strip the Invective of all its modern features it is just a 6505 with the old block letter transformer. The Invective 120 is Peavey's 6505 III or Modern 6505. Also the Invective is only 500 bucks more, not double the price as you claimed. The new 6505 II is 1500 and the Invective is 2000. 500 bucks is not a lot to bump up and get all those features like boosts and noise gates on each channel, a Fender-like clean channel, XLR out, ability to change the wattage, two effects loops, the ability to create presets on the pedalboard, etc.

Fair point. If one isn’t going to be a stickler for “Made in USA”, then the Invective is quite possibly the best total package amp deal from the entire Peavey and even EVH family of amps.

The only problem with the Invective is it sucks and sounds like garbage. I owned one for over a year and I hated it. The sound was harsh and overall unpleasant. I also own a 6505 and an EVH 100 Stealth. Both sound so much better.

$500 is no big bump, for real? With respect, Not trying to be a dick, hear me out bro... that $500 bump is the difference on a completed package bro. That money right there it's an OD Pedal (Boss, Ibanez or depending on sales possibly a "boutique company"), at least 1 instrument/ patch cables, 1 or 2 sets if strings and some picks if you really think about it that way. Dont get me wrong, what you said totally makes sense and I completely understand where your coming from, its only an extra $500 and you get x,y,z. However, look at the market and what is being sold and the price vs the value. Now look at these two amps side by side again. With that being said, why hasn't the amp that's has been around for 30+ years, been through the hands of all the greats yet still doesn't come relatively even close to modern day specs? I'm just saying that small amount of money will add up very quickly. Regardless, you do have a good point, bro. Totally respect too, cheers to ya! Have a good one!

Peavey isn't doing this release hype very well. The first video of it by Kyle Bull was released almost a year ago. Anyways. Great playing as always dude. This amp definitely seems like an upgrade to the 6505+, both aesthetic and sound-wise. The Peavey logo they use here is the superior logo. Happy Halloween!

I picked up a 6505II recently and am very happy with it. Especially for the price. Much like jrtme below. I'm almost 50 and picked up an original block letter in '95. I think the head and slant cabinet cost around $1200. Wish those prices were still here! Wish it were USA made, but the Chinese factory spat out a killer metal amp. Great demo!

Block Letter 5150 is the king and it always will be! Yes! Transformers are key! Its in the feel as well not just the tone. Both the the feel and tone are better on the block letter plus having the 90's production Shuguang factory made preamp tubes is key and the original Sylvania USA made 6L6 power tubes. Great vid!

For the record the tonal differences I hear when he compares the two are the exact same differences I hear when I simply put brand new power tubes in any of my amps. 5150 or not. I did a reamping test pre and post new tubes in a framus amp and it was the same sound as his + vs II. I’m sure the amps great tho. And if they really are being truthful about these “special block letter transformers” it would make the 6505 II unique because obviously by the time the 5150 II came out any “special block letter era transformers” were certainly gone, meaning no 5150 II ever existed with those transformers, let alone a 6505+

Yes, there is 110% a difference between the block letter face plate amplifiers and the signature face plate amplifiers. I have both... funny enough it's about the same difference between your 6505+ and you're 6505ii... both of my 5150 amplifiers are completely original and untouched. I didn't have any idea about the transformer switch so good to know now I can change the transformer in my signature face plate and replace it with the same type of transformer that is in the block letter and essentially it should be a significant upgrade... I would be willing to bet that there are some signature face plate versions floating around with block letter transformers in them because I don't think they have a clear timeline of when the switch happened in comparison to when they changed the face plates so I'm sure some of them have the older transformer. Unfortunately mine doesn't though lol.

I am going to purchase this amp and I am very excited about it but I do have a couple serious questions. All the efforts put into design and engineering and still after purchase this amp and cabinet. I still need to buy tube screamer and other pedals like noise gate. Why haven't you fixed these issues so that all us metal head guitar players can for the very first time just buy an amplifier, turn it on and just play it as we bought it. Tube screamer and noise gate are very obvious necessarily needed. Build this into the amplifier for christ sake. For the money we pay peavy needs to address these issues and save us some money so we can play it out of the box so to say. 1600 for the head and 2000 for the full stack and I still have to dump money on an automatic 2+ pedals. I could be wrong maybe this will be excellent out of the box but I will be disappointed if I still have to buy these products on op f the amplifier just to play it. It's a sick amp and I'm very excited to own one. definitely not complaining just suggesting. I'm grateful for such a metal head machine. But we need to evolve, include everything we need in one design. And why are you playing hello kitty guitar and non metal guitars to demo a metal amplifier. Do this some justice You need an esp horizon f-2 in your hands if you want to properly shred and demo this amplifier.

I'll be blunt. The transformer bit sounds like the biggest load of marketing bull. These amps have been modded, ripped apart, studied for years and years and years and years. Someone would have noticed YEARS AGO the transformers were different between block letters and signatures. Here's a quote from Jerry of the legendary FJA mods from the rig-talk forums a decade ago. "Peavey never used orange drop caps. They have always used caps made by Illinios Capacitor. The older ones were orange, but they weren't orange drops. Same caps. The only differences in the amps are these: The pots changed in look, still all made by CTS. This happened within the first few years. The power amp circuit board layout changed in the 5150II after it was out a couple years. The 5150 started using that same power amp board just before it became the 6505. The manufacturer of the output transformer changed at some point after it became the 6505. Peavey always used this manufacturer for the power transformer and for the XXX/JSX amps, but used a different manufacturer for the 5150 output transformer. The early 5150 did not have a different transformer than the later signature amps as some people have claimed online. The ribbon cables were changed recently to a heavier duty thicker wire instead of a flat ribbon cable. Main difference, different tube suppliers thru the years."

5150/6505 are the people's champion. Very easy to dial in the sound. Most important of all it's very affordable.

Kind of a dumb question but when you record these vids is fucking loud as hell being a 100 watt high gain amp? Or is there a way to bring it down to bedroom volumes? I’m just trying to figure out a way to play my high gain amp in my apartment 😭 If anyone can help me out much would be appreciated.

Get an MXR 10 band in the FX loop, you can trim your frequencies in detail and reduce the volume to an acceptable level with the gain and volume sliders. Works only if you rely on pre-amp gain (like most hi gain amps). If you want to incorporate power amp gain: get a reactive load box with attenuator option.

My man you can’t complain that it doesn’t have modern features and then complain that the 5150 with modern features (Invective) has too many. lol The Invective was specifically designed to be that exact amp. (With an improved clean channel, all the bells and whistles, and a return back to the original 5150 transformers) Also, if they added those features to the new amps the price would increase and they’d get their lunch eaten by Fender/EVH. The entire point of the 6505 is it’s THE 5150 circuit, and at an affordable price. That’s why they’ve sold a ton of them. Fender is already trying to undercut them with the name and price point of the Iconic, and if Peavey deviated from the circuit and, or upped the price then they’d lose their competitive advantage with these amps. (Besides just being otherwise awesome lol)
