Jeff Lynne is the heart and soul of ELO. I don't often use the word genius, but he is at that level. His songwriting and ear for orchestral production are top level.

Original member and keyboardist Richard Tandy just died at the age of 76. He was such a big part of their sound. So glad I was able to see them live. RIP Richard 🙏🏻

Apparently Jeff Lynne wrote this song in response to his father saying he 'couldn't write a melody'. He had been in a successful band called the Move and even had some success before that... and this was his third album with The Electric Light Orchestra. Still he gets grief from his father... well I hope he showed his father something moving forward. Thanks for the reaction.

In 1974 ( I think) I went along with some high school friends to see Deep Purple in Vancouver. I’m not the biggest fan of DP, but the opening band was one I didn’t know…ELO! Here we are a 1/2 century late, still love their music.

Once you really get to know ELO - meaning Jeff's - music, you find out that there are many recurring themes and patterns. Some keywords are: Love (duh!) Girl leaves guy. (Sometimes he's sad, sometimes angry.) Blue (the colour.) Rain Time Space Scifi Childhood and fears of growing up War (Jeff doesn't like war) Birmingham Beatles Radio Fantasy and adventures this may seem a quite chaotic list, but it does make sense.
