Is this a good option for nomadic living?
Jane has tested out the tipi in the wind for 3 months. The challenge in the desert is the wind. I have been looking for a decent tipi that can withstand the elements! It is made with world-class fabrics and is one of the most versatile and advanced tents on the market.

Polyester/cotton is an incredible fabric for tents. In Australia a lot of our tents are made out of this fabric. Breathability of cotton and the strength of polyester.

I just upgraded to a Browning 10'x15' cabin tent and have the same issues with winds. The tent can handle the wind but the noise and flapping makes for too much bedlam to sleep in it. I've been wondering if a tipi would mitigate the wind issue but sounds like not. I would stay with the cabin tent. It's $350 instead of $2200. It's much bigger in floor area, which is all usable since it has nearly straight sides. The ceiling height is a little over 7' so no problems standing. I also prefer having an integral floor to keep out the varmints. With the window panels unzipped, the ventilation is phenomenal. And if the rain fly isn't needed, the whole roof is mesh giving a terrific view of the stars at night. I like the romance of the tipi, but could never justify 6X the cost for smaller, darker living space. I appreciate the review, though. It was very informative.

Advantage of this design is portability and ease of setup. Wich is king under the right circumstances. Personally I would go for a yurt design if it were my wife and I were traveling via minivan, but those are a pita to setup and take down.

A traditional Sioux tipi's fabric is pulled very taut and doesn't flap in the breeze. They are very sturdy but require many long heavy poles. (See the old book, The Indian Tipi, by Reginald Laubin.) I'd like to see someone make a production Sioux tipi with collapsible lightweight poles.
@mrspeigle1
@mrspeigle1 2 жыл бұрын
@@lunzie01 idk if it would be practical from a cost and convenience standpoint. The more poles you add the higher the cost and greater weight and bulk plus ease of setup suffers as well. Remember the old Lakota tipis had alot of extra pairs of hands during setup and takedown.

Love this! I'm using a tent/suv. At this time using a Walmart tent when the weather is good. I'm currently designing an A-frame Viking tent to save money and have a very durable tent. Thank you HOWA for providing tents for folks.

If I had one, I would miss windows and I think I’d pitch it where it can stay up longer than maximum of 14 days or less. I agree w her to relinquish it to someone that really needs it and that could really make a difference in the quality of their living. Great review! Thank you!

I love teepees! I have friends and family who live on the reservation. When I come for a visit they've already put it up the teepee for me at the back of their trailer. A few of us sleep out there and talk to Night Away but never Disturbed any of the older or younger members of the household. When the tornado came through it took out their last trailer basement over 2 years in the teepees while they waited for the new trailer. You know they're well-made when you can sleep in them through an Idaho winter!

I agree . I have a 8×8 canvas tent . It's got windows and a foor . Only $500 . I'm sure both have there advantages and disadvantages but I see more upside in a real tent .

@@garytheprogressivelibertar560 growing up we always had canvas tents, it was a military thing. I never had floors, and neither do the teepees. We did make fires in the ground near the front of the teepee or tent. We used rugs around the edge of either to block the drafts. I'll have to say we did all the things they tell you not to now

Im in the UK and do a lot of outdoor wild camping. We have a teepeee tent as it is easy to put up and we have sailed through several really bad storms with no problems at all. Once in the high peaks we had 40 mph winds and lightening that was hitting the floor and the rain as so bad it flattened other peoples tents, ours had no problems at all. I would highly recommend. Also realy easy for my care needs as I can use my wheelchair inside the teepee.

i think a shift pod would be ideal for long term tent living. it has a zip in floor, is insulated from the heat and cold, sets up in two minutes and runs around 1500 plus shipping for a twelve foot hexagon.

Another tent without a bathtub floor? For $2,200 I wouldn’t want a tent that allows all manner of critters to join me for the night, or the rain. How would I keep my dog from getting out? I think what would bother me the most is not being able to look outside without leaving the tipi? And does dust come flying under the sides when it’s windy?I’m waiting for you to find a geodesic dome style tent, Bob.

You got to be kidding a $2200 tent with no floor! We get desert down pours of rain that can leave 2 inches of standing water behind. This tent might keep your head dry but your feet 2 inches in water. The woman spoke of withstanding 45 mph hour winds what she didnt talk about was all the sand and wind blowing in under the walls. You would be better off buying a $10 tarp and sleeping on the ground. No wonder the woman returned it.

I've never had a problem returning any tent or screenhouse. I cam (and do) glamp camp for less than that tent. Three room tent with screen porch, dining tent with windows & ventalation for the kitchen with a combo stove/oven and a two room shower tent. Plus the camp "furinture". All fit in the trunk & put it up myself. We each camp our own way.

In hurricane winds add gusts of that speed 35-45mph, would be a real test, rains and cold are 25-51 degree temps, this Christmas time of year. In Oregon NW, this would not work? 100mph + with combined winds add gusts. Temps? Internal heat source used? Set up and breakdown? Do not store food inside or cook in it, as to go bear might need your picnic basket.
