I like reading or I like to read? I like to wear slippers at home. I like having a moustache. In this video we'll look at 3 situations when you have to use like + infinitive or the gerund (verb + ing). We'll also look at when you can use both without any change in meaning.

This is the most clear explanation so far, I reckon. This topic can be very confusing since textbooks tend to simplify things saying verbs like "like, hate, detest, etc." only work with the -ing form, the Cambridge dictionary online distinguishes the usage with to infinitive and -ing the same way you do but the British Council (I saw the explanation in the section for teenagers) says the usage of to infitive with these verbs is American, whereas British uses -ing both for habits and to emphasise the joy of performing the action (which would explain why textbooks tend to avoid explaining the difference).

I am an English teacher teaching Chinese students. I am from China. Many of my Chinese students asks me whether it is Verb+ To do or Verb+ doing. You can use my rules 99% of the time. When there is time sequence between two actions, it is 'verb plus to do' For example Plan to do firstly you plan, then you do, two actions does not happen at the same time. If two actions happens at the same time, it is 'verb + doing' avoid doing. You cannot avoid first ,then you do. want to do or want doing? You want first before you do, there is time sequence, then it is want to do. Hope it helps! Stop to do (firstly you stop, then you do another task) and stop doing (happens at the same time, means stop what you are doing currently. Correct me if it does not help you memorize whether the chosen verb should followed by' to do' or 'doing'

Thanks a million, I was struggling to find way to explain this to my 6 year old nieces, which form to use when they want to talk about hobbies, I guess the best way is just to stick to “like to do” for now until they are old enough to learn when to use “like to” vs “like doing”.

Hi! Thanks for the lesson! Could you please explain the other similar constructions? Which variants are correct: “try to do smth” or “try doing smth”, “start(stop) to do smth” or “start(stop) doing smth”? If both are correct, than what is the difference? There are probably some more examples, but I can’t recall them now ;) Please let us know if there are some general rules for the situations of this kind. Thank you!

Hello Gideon,Could we summarize like this : when verb+ing can be considered as a NOUN (skating, singing, cooking...) that means you like the activity, not as a performer, but as a spectator (on TV show for instance) ?Anyway, thanks for your videos, always precise, clear and pleasant !

You could say " I listen to your lessons before I go to sleep." Otherwise, use the gerund immediately after the words; before, after, while, when, already... Examples; Use this cream before sleeping/ after waking up,,/ He is already sleeping,/ When singing, relax your jaw. etc. Yes, I also admire Gideon's clear communication, quirky humor and natural gift for teaching. I learn so much from his videos.

Thanks, dear Gideon, I introduced my Ss to the FCE, and I encouraged them to use gerunds, instead of infinitives. The question in this part 1 of the Speaking test was: What do you like about living in (Lima)? But, what happens if a student says: "I like to go to the parks" instead of saying: "I like going to the parks.." in his answer. The examiner considers this in the score? I suppose she considers that :0

Hi! I'd like to ask what form is proper: I like watching you paint, I like to watch you paint or I like to see you paint/ painting. How do they all differ and is a verb see as good as watch in this case if I mean watching someone doing sth? Thanks in advance!

Great video, applies to U.S. English as well. This might be a while other topic, but there are situations in which verb+infinitive and verb+gerund are wildly different. One example: We stopped to smoke vs. we stopped smoking.
