Yes, there is no mention of the mythical "Gurula" bird in any of the writings or historical records or stone inscriptions, but..... How do you explain the three claws of the "lion"? Why did they choose three claws instead of four????!!!! How do you explain the slightly angled claw on each foot? I think there is more to it than what is recorded in the history. On the other hand, king Kashyapa & his stone masons could've made a practical decision to stop at three claws. Either way, there is an explanation for the three claws of the "lion". I don't think Prof. Somadeva has an answer or a speculation. I get the feeling he's been avoiding the question.

What you see today (the smooth masonry work) is after the restoration work was carried out, so may have changed what was there originally. Dr. Somadeva mentioned that during Bell's time the entire area was covered with earth and that has to be removed to discover the area for the entrance. If by any chance we can find a picture taken at that time of the entrance before carrying out the restoration work, we may find how it looked like before?

Gurula is a bird my dear. Bird feet are not like this. Please google and look at images of bird feet. Birds feet are designed to grab tree brances. The toes of birds are separated widely. If you look at this , this is not birds feet at all. The toes are not separated widely. These are clearly feet of a mammal.

There is an old Black and white photo taken during british times showing the Lion paws with just brick work , looks like the smooth plaster was added in later years. Also the east entrance would have been the main entrance as no one would enter and exit from the west for important tasks. The west entrance would have been just for family to enjoy when at home I am guessing?.

Is there any chance of getting hold of this B&W picture? If so please send it to Nuwan, so he may be able to publish it for the benefit of Unlimited History program followers on KZbin.
