Roy Patterson, 31, lives in Philadelphia and earns a base salary of $118,000 per year managing a team of project managers at Cigna. Patterson was able to pay off over $55,000 in student loans just before his 30th birthday. Now that he’s paid off all of his debt, Patterson is focused on saving for the future.
This is the latest installment of Millennial Money, which profiles people across the U.S. and details how they earn and spend their money.
Read more about Roy's budget breakdown here: cnb.cx/2RsquMi
There was no silver bullet to pay off the loans, which his parents co-signed, he says. Instead, he lived ultra-frugally, throwing every extra dollar toward the debt each month. While he will earn close to $150,000 this year, he paid off his debt while earning between $61,000 to $90,000 per year.
He was inspired by personal finance expert Suze Orman, and “The Suze Orman Show” became appointment television each week for him and his mother when he was still living with his parents in Connecticut.
Mother and son followed Orman’s advice together, holding each other accountable to pay off debt - credit card and car bills for his mom, student loans for Patterson - and get the rest of their finances in order. While his parents provided a stable home for him and his siblings growing up, Patterson says, as immigrants from Jamaica they didn’t understand the nuances of the American financial system. Watching Orman’s show taught them how money works in the U.S.
“I told my mom, If you do it, I’m going to do it. And we made this pact,” he says. “We would share our wins, we would share our successes. If we failed at something or we felt like we could do better, we shared that as well.”
Using advice from Orman and Patterson’s own internet research, he decided to use the snowball method of debt repayment: He paid off the loan with the lowest balance first, and then moved on to the next largest loan, and so on, until all seven federal loans and five private loans were paid off. He credits part of his success to Orman’s no-nonsense attitude and advice, adding his reverence has become something of an inside joke. “My friends call me Mr. Orman,” he says with a laugh.
He doesn’t regret the years of cost-cutting now that he’s debt free, although he occasionally wishes he hadn’t made quite so many sacrifices. He skipped a family trip to Jamaica because he didn’t want to buy a plane ticket, and he doesn’t want to miss out on experiences like that any more. Some things, like vacations with his loved ones and, of course, the P50, are worth the expense.
“I worked with my mom, and the joy that she has in her life now, knowing that she’s also debt free, makes me realize that what we did works,” he says. “It allows us to live the life that we wanted to live.”

I hope y'all heard it took him 7 years to reach a six figure tech salary. It's not a get rich quick career. Not everyone automatically goes to a bootcamp for 3-6 months or studies a CS degree and comes out with six figs. Some worked help desk at $15 an hour and worked up the IT ladder or made lateral moves into software or cloud. Others came out of college with a 50k a year programming job and worked up. Others, like me, struggled for years before even getting in. Don't lose the faith. Be realistic. 🤷🏾‍♀️ So proud of him. 👌🏾

@Elyse George The other person is Bukola from thecomeup (her youtube) and we both went to Recurse Center. That's not the case for most people. RC mostly takes in people with several years of experience. It's not a bootcamp it's a retreat. It's completely undirected and you have to already know how to code to get in. I've been in the RC community 4 years and know most with no experience do not get a job that fast. It's geared towards learning and not employment (common for people in between tech jobs or on a sabbatical). She also started as a dev at 110k (3 years later 210k), went to an IVY, and worked at a good firm before RC. There are many factors that play into it. It's definitely not impossible, but not so easy. Average person at RC has 3 years of industry experience. Even the top bootcamps like App Academy and Hackreactor are difficult to get in to (5% acceptance), complete, and obtain a job after. If you don't keep up they kick you out. I'm not discouraging people. I just want to help people be realistic. I get emails, twitter and Instagram dms every week from bootcamp grads who can't find a job.

It depends on the company you’re working for. Working at a FANG company (Facebook, Amazon, Google, Netflix and many others) guarantees you’ll be getting 6 figures. The average for an entry level engineer (right out of college) is 180K / year. And it’s not like they don’t hire juniors.

I agree with him fully about feeling free and capable of doing anything when you have no debt. I’ll be 100% debt free next month, approximately $52k paid off in about 30 months. It was a mixture of student loans, my car, and credit card debt. I’ll be so happy to be done.

Moun Bakko well you should probably revise that to say “illegal immigrants” or “semi” illegal immigrants that just found a way to come to US solely to get a better life... But nowadays, a lot you so called “immigrants” are investment immigrants who have money invested in and IS government thank them by giving them green cards. It’s called EB5, you should look it up and know many of those are Chinese rich guys that created jobs here. You probably didn’t mean bad, but I know some really wealthy chinese investors that got green cards/citizenship because a huge investment they put it( $900K is the bar). That’s the money most Americans can’t dream about. You were probably talking about specially “immigrants” that are from less developed places like Latin American or Africa, cuz only that would makes sense that they just wanna a “better” life

K C Why did seeing someone who looks like you make you feel as though you could make it, too?? Why is our race filled with so many people who need to see others do something before they believe they can do it or it serves as hope/motivation??? Didn’t you have a father??? Didn’t he tell you to believe in yourself no matter what??? Didn’t you look in the mirror as a child and tell yourself how great you were??? I did. I made $135K+ last year with my little funky law degree, and that ain’t sh*t! I know I’m destined to make WAY more without seeing anybody else who looks like me do it. We are so weak minded it is unreal. Believe in you. Focus on one main goal to the exclusion of everyone and anything. Accomplish it even if you have to sell your soul to do it. That success will lead to other successes. I’m so sick of hearing us talk like we don’t expect greatness. F*cking get it done!! No excuses.

The bills split thing is honestly a case by case basis type of thing. Before we got married, my spouse and I split bills 50/50. After marrying, we had separate expense accounts for a while and split bills proportional to our salaries - it was about 65/35. After fully combining finances it’s just become an common expense pool. You gotta do what works! Until it doesn’t. Then you communicate and tweak it.

I watched The Suze Orman show until it ended in 2015, when she decided to leave (it wasn't canceled). She gave some great advice, and it helped me get out of debt. As someone stated above, Suze's prepaid debit card did have a lot of fees, just like all the other prepaid debit cards. But it hurt Suze's brand because she's a financial guru. People should just stay away from prepaid debit cards completely.

I don’t understand all this negative comments. This was a good episode. First of all, he lives with his girlfriend... not his wife. She needs to pay her part of the rent. Why are you all acting as if people that co-habitate don’t split the rent- this isn’t a new concept! Unless they are married, why should he supplement her basic living expenses? If they live together, it’s split 50-50. He’s even being generous doing 60-40. I rarely even comment in KZbin, but this comment section frustrates me .. I had to say something.
