What we really are missing out on is the nightmare that the RV industry has become, Mathematically, at least for us, the numbers just don’t make sense and the stress of continuous breakdowns, broken dealer promises and RV manufacturers who just can’t seem to build quality products is something we don’t need in our day. Each to their own, but for us, this is the route we have decided will work best for us. This couple’s story is proof positive that no matter how much you spend, in this case over 1/2 million dollars, and no matter what the “old” reputation of the manufacturer is, in this case (Bob) Tiffin, that RVing today is risky to say the least. No one should have to go through what these young people have had to endure, but especially on a brand-recognized, brand new, $500,000+ motorhome. This story is outrageous and egregious and only cements our choice to go with Holiday Inn over any RV manufacturer.

The tec. told me everything is thrown together with the hope it is out of warranty but the consumer finds the issues. The dealer ship at the time of delivery showed us the RV, with the 50 amp. cord plug hanging out of the wall. The tip outs were 2 inches out of plumb the D molding out, the storage door that was bent. ( they sent me a new one to install. REALLY ) most of the receptacles did not work 3 pages of repair and we never spent a night in it. So many problems that the dealership gave me $500. to bring it back. The awning tore, the curtains were missing but ( they sent me them to install) We were in Montreal and a service technician from a local dealer was along side of us working, showed us a bunch of things I didn’t notice. Sooo it sitting in a shop waiting for Forest River to approve the repairs. It was manufactured in September last year!

@@jeffwhite3021 What do you reckon has happened to cause the lack of good Engineers??
@jeffwhite30212 ай бұрын
@brettymike I don't know if it's bad engineering. Just very difficult to get good quality parts and assembly technicians who can compensate for issues and solve problems. Motorhomes are very much "hand built" and quality suffers if the labor doesn't have a strong technical background vs say automotive assembly lines where tasks can be automated and checked over 1000's of duplicate units.

Traveled to all 50 states and hundreds of other nations and saw their R.V.'s too. They are small, yes very small. America is huge, third largest nation, unlike Canada #2 in size where 90% of their land is not usable and population too is one hundred miles along our joint 4,000 mile border. Great R.V. trips there, but just stay in the ZONE. Anyway, we had three R.V.'s over much of our 55 years of marriage and the quality of most all the companies has gone down every decade. I produced large food, home, recreation & health shows, and home builder shows nationwide and nine just in beautiful Alabama each year, and we had a large R.V. section either inside if I had enough square footage or outside in not. In those days when it rained the water did not come into your rig. Our last huge R.V. had hundreds of issues, (four slide outs) even ten years ago, and we were handy, both of us to fix most, but the slides are scary bad, as they are most complicated and need a specialist from the plant in many cases. Our suggestion is if you are old with money and thinking of buying a class, A, class C, or even a class B, do your homework and if you are not handy at fixing things in remote areas of the nation, you best stick to not buying one and just go with motels, as we just go with Hilton. When we took a trip from Alabama to Branson, Missouri to see our family there, (he is a home builder/developer and even builds huge buildings and mini-malls), but he bought a new 5th wheel like ours, but five years newer. Well, first trip parked by our 5th wheel, the master builder of everything, could not fix two of his four slide outs. His rig was just two week old, GO FIGURE! When Bob Tiffin was at Red Bay, Alabama and was boss, they built the best of the best coast to coast, and we know as we have been in many, many dozens of his big rigs and believe us NO ONE ever said they were not the best then. Since Thor took over and his grand son took the helm, now us and Liz see these issues. What a shame, as Tiffin was for sure was the best made and backed by the company too. Times are a changing and maybe not for the better. Today I just read even Honda is closing two plants in China, same in Thailand, U.K. and even in Japan too. We just bought a new Acura MDX three row and wife a new 24' Honda CR-V and love them, but what the hell is going on? Best look out your window, as today they said a huge asteroid is on its way, can things get any worse?

I once wanted to by a Tiffin. Brought my wife and kids and sat inside a seemingly beautiful coach while our salesman finished up with another customer. Thank god it started pouring like crazy. My wife said what's that, and there was literally a wave of water coming from the opposite wall toward us. Then water started gushing in from the top of the other slide. I suddenly realized the slides must not have been pulled tight. Nope. Checked both switches and the walls and no movement. They were in tight. My wife asked if we could leave and we bailed on that store without seeing the sales guy. Buying a Tiffin or any other class A was never discussed in our house again. I'm still very thankful for that well timed downpour 🙏🏻
@dennisgardiner432 ай бұрын
Tiffen may need to invest in x-ray equipment so they can see inside of the walls and floor. This would allow them to pin point where the problem is on a coach's hidden structure. Feel sorry for the owners, but I also feel for the repair techs. It has to be frustrating to keep working on a problem, day-in and day-out without finding a solution. As a retired tech, this would keep me up at night thing about the possible solutions.

I've been following KZbin clips on RVing for maybe 10yrs and I haven't been convinced, onced priced hiring an RV for a holiday and priced motels for the same trip, it was very similar, what made me go motels/hotels was not having to worry about the black/grey tanks and driving an apartment around the country.

The cost difference between building them right and building them the way they should be would be minimal compared to the long-term damage to this company. My #1 saying is you can't afford to save that much. The first generation sows it, the second grows it, and the third blows it. I hope this story ultimately has a happy ending, but it doesn't look good. Thanks Liz for the excellent work.

We have a 2001 Newmar Dutchstar motorhome on a Spartan chassis with 145,000 miles on it. It was purchased new by us. After watching these videos with all the problems of the new units, I would not trade for any of them. We do not have all the fancy new bells and whistles, just the old mechanical items the work great. Ours was built when Newmar built quality and stood behind the product. There was a few issues the first couple years and Newmar took are of it, no problem. Now with the new owners of Newmar, I wonder how much the quality has been pushed aside for profit. Think we will keep the old bullet proof 2001 model for a while!! Better yet, it has been paid for a long time.

Maybe foreign RV manufacturers should try selling their units here. Maybe the completion would help to shake up the RV market and force them to put out better quality products. Kind of like when Toyota and Honda got the Big Three to start making both quality AND reliable vehicles.
