As someone from Chicago's south side, I found it refreshing to see people like Chance coming from my neighborhood. However, the hate he receives for being "too positive" confirms that we, as a society, are addicted to the drama-filled side of Chicago. Chance was showing that not every person from Chicago's south side embraces foolishness. We had King Von, Durk, and Chief Keef - three, from my experience, who were certified criminals. I wanted to see a balance, and I believed that Chance was necessary. The only downfall was his album, which talked about his strong-faced wife. What city in America fully wanted to be known for violence? and you do know that type of publicity drives the economy which drives away the tourists and there goes the jobs. i feel like chance and really everybody from the chi around that time was extremely lucky to have found each other and cultivated a network of creatives. artists like vic mensa nico segal and producers like peter cottontale and cam obi all coming up at the same time is a beautiful coincidence that made for some incredible art. i ALSO feel like so much of the creative energy was funneled into chances output and thats why he became the star. he wouldnt have been half of what he was without all the incredible collaborators who cultivated that sonic profile. an incredible musician like nico segal will never get his flowers despite being responsible for some of the most iconic musical moments throughout chances discog. and its telling that nowadays he isnt working with those same people and his music doesnt have that magic in it anymore. i know people change and grow and you cant stay close with everybody always but man he really started thinking he could recreate lightning in a bottle without any of the same conductors (aye thats a bar lowkey)
