The Broadmoor Hotel is in Colorado Springs, about 70 miles south of Denver. It is not in the mountains, but right at the edge of the plains, before the foothills of Pikes Peak. It actually sits right in front of Cheyenne Mountain, which rises directly up from the plains. I grew up there and remember seeing these when they were in use. Cadillac also built red limousines for the Broadmoor as well. I actually liked those better.

1959 is one of my favorite years for GM cars. This car is just too big. I used to have a '59 Chevrolet Sedan Delivery, but I think it's kinda small compared to this one. The glass in this vehicle is awesome! The front windshield is pretty standard '59 GM wrap around, and those two small triangular rear wrap around windows in the back give the whole body glass this curved flow. The glass roof is incredible!

Nicely done video & history. But, GM didn't build the complete car. All Broadmoor Skyviews were custom jobs done by Superior Coach in Ohio from the firewall back, as you can see from the Broadmoor badge in the rear door. Superior is still in business, building hearses, funeral flower cars, custom limos. They also built ambulances much on the same basis as the Skyviews.

A few facts can be inserted. Yes, the Broadmoor is "near" Denver but is actually in Colorado Springs. Not in the mountains but at the base of the Front Range. He mentions three of these 59s. Actually there were eight with six being for the Broadmoor. I saw them frequently while driving tours up Pikes Peak over four college summers. I do not have the numbers but there were others of this type built over several years. I believe starting with 1955.

This is why the back windows could roll down in the doors and there were vent windows for third/fourth row seating positions. Notice this car also has no air conditioning, which makes sense in Colorado. But I believe I did catch vent ports on the top of the back door. Wish they had shown a little more about that last-row seat.

Wonderful video footage of a rare coach. Best viewed with volume off however to counteract multitude of inaccuracies. Wow. A friend recommended this channel to me a while back and, after nearly a year, I put on the jacket that had the piece of paper where I'd written down your channel name. I've been watching a lot of your videos and really love your format and the details you focus on. Only thing missing are maybe a couple 4-doors, although I know they're rare at car shows since everybody wants the cool, sporty two-door models (Me included) but it's still interesting to always see the different designs manufacturers offered on their four door models, especially in the late 50s and early 60s. And trunks, because the detailing in some classic car trunks is truly amazing (along with the sheer size), although I know many keep personal items and even extra parts in the trunks so it might be an unrealistic thing to ask for. Great videos Lou and I look forward to seeing even more classics in 2016!
@loucostabile8 жыл бұрын
+Sedan57Chevy Hi Sedan57Chevy, Hi, You've clearly been watching the details. There are SOOO many AWESOME cars to choose from I had to help myself and put some rules in place. I don't do trucks or motorcycles because it's called "My Car Story". I don't to trunks because you're correct, usually there is "Junk in the trunk", and it saves time for the Viewer who's viewing, because generally it's not all that exciting. I don't do 4 doors since people usually like to view the "Sporty 2 doors". However...occasionally I do 4 door (type in KZbin "My Car Story with Lou Costabile 1958 Cadillac Caddy Eldorado Brougham 4 Door in Black paint"), and every now and then a truck may show up (type into KZbin "My Car Story with Lou Costabile 1955 Ford Beatnik Bubbletop & Engine Start @ Klairmont Kollections"), and sometime the trunk is so special, I do one (type into KZbin "My Car Story with Lou Costabile 1947 Hudson Series 178 Pickup RestoMod at the World of Wheels"). The bottom line, THANK YOU for being so kind for sharing your comments with me. Take care, Lou

Honestly I reckon with the chrome trimmed "pie" windows allowed for a more versatile coach IMO. But I also like how it seemed like Superior had alot of fun and creative freedom with the commercial chassis that Caddy/GM gave them. Actually, easy to drive - just realize that with 156 inch wheelbase, it takes more room to turn and park. "Rides like a Cadillac." I still have my 59 Superior hearse which was my daily driver for 4 years.

The Broadmoor Hotel is located in Colorado Springs, not somewhere in the mountains. These cars were used to carry hotel guests to and from the airport and train station, as well as tours up Pikes Peak. The small A in the Broadmoor emblem was meant as an insult to the Antlers Hotel, the Broadmoor's main competition in Colorado Springs.

I remember when General Motors once built professional cars, the hearses, limousines and combination coaches that could be used both as a hearse or ambulance. I can remember the days when we had a combo and folded down the side jump seat, removed O2 bottles, the Q2 on top, flipped up the rollers and placed landau bars on rear side windows when it was to be used as a hearse.

Wow! That’s unique! I thought Superior Coach was the builder from the style. S&S (Hess & Eisenhardt) and Miller-Meteor were the other 2 major builders of funeral cars and ambulances. I have heard of the Broadmore through “Homicide Hunter: Lt Joe Kenda”, who was head of the Colorado Springs PD major crimes squad. There were several homicides which involved Broadmore employees.

There's one of those little gray station wagons behind the Cadillac there's one in Lakeport Clearlake California in a single car garage Justice in California it's the very same car primer gray or maybe that's the paint no glass anywhere but it's the Nomad design a Corvette Station Wagon and this is no amateur-built this thing is seriously flawless

Superior built the commercial part of the body as evidenced by the tag with 666 on it. Cadillac built it from the dash forward on an ambulance chassis.

59' was a great year for Cadillac. And this example is out of this world. It defines retro. Looks like to me that this Cadillac chassis might also have been used for a Hearse. So it could have been either a celebration of Life or a celebration of Death. Cadillac covered it all. Suicide doors might have even made it more interesting. I have only owned two Cadillac's. One was a 1957 Coupe Deville Gold Edition. And a 1963 Sedan Deville. The 1957 was my favorite. But there are quite a few different versions of cars in the Cadillac lineup. If you were willing to pay, Cadillac would provide.
