The pied and lutino variety of Senegal Parrots are nowhere nearly as attractive as the natural form. No wonder they can’t compete with the natural colour form. By the way, I love the grey heads. The contrast is rather unique and I don’t find them looking evil at all. A very handsome species indeed IMHO.

I have a 27 year old female senegal I named Dia. I worked in an exotic bird aviary years ago and she was pulled as an egg from the nesting box and hatched in an incubator. I took her home at 1 week of age and hand fed her. She was raised with my 3 year old and 9 month old children. She prefers me, but tolerates my son pretty well. She was fine with my daughter until she had a friend over and they started poking at Dia through the cage bars. Dia has never liked my daughter since, and to this day when my daughter visits, Dia has a hissy fit until she leaves. I also have found that she loves eating cooked egg whites and roasted chicken chunks two or three times per week. I think the protein helps because Dia has never had any health issues. She is a quiet bird and mimics my laughter, phone and microwave more than talking. Loves head rubs!

I have 3 Sennies. One s a 25 year old female who I bought as a fledging. Generally friendly to all, but particularly adores my son. Intelligent, playful and generally lovely, but can occasionally bite unpredictably if she doesn't get her own way or if another bird annoys her. And it hurts - a lot. But I love her to bits, even if she rules the house with a rod of iron. The second is a male aged about 22. I got him as a rescue and it was the second time he'd been rescued. The first time, he had been abused and was scared of people but had made progress under his second owner. It took 10 years of hard work to fully socialise him and he is now friendly, never bites and will accept and enjoy a head scratch. The third is of unknown gender and is aged about 10, having been rescued by me 5 years ago. His previous owners had fed him(her) well, but never let him out of his cage or handled him. From day one with me, he was incredibly tame and could be handled with complete trust. He now spends as much time with me as I can spare and is simply the most adorable, tame bird I've ever seen. He never bites and actually enjoys being handled. All Sennies are wonderful if properly socialised and trained.

I am really interested in getting a Senegal. They’re beautiful and fascinating - I’ve been looking for some information on grouping Sennies. If I got two is it better to cage them together or separate them, also should I get two males, two females or one of each.
@Loveofpets7 ай бұрын
Hi, its best to have separate cages as they are known to be aggressive with each other especially in a cage setting. It's best to get male and female or possibly 2 males. 2 females will most likely fight. I would house them separate and let them out together under supervision as there is a chance they may not like each other. 2 males may fight as well. It's a 50/50 chance they will either get along or not get along.

I have a Senegal. Her name is Baby. She’s about 25(ish) and she’s the sweetest thing. I agree with you...no dust, she’s a pretty clean bird. She does do the high pitch scream when she sees me in the kitchen. Apparently she’s upset I’m not paying attention to her? LOL She says a few things (she just mumbled hello as I was typing this). If she sees me eating something that intrigues her, she comes to the front of her cage and says “what’s what”. Cracks me up. Her favorite thing to do is make kissy noises, though. And, as you said, she doesn’t seem to like other birds. I was paying attention to my cockatiel the other night and she flew down and headed straight for Tiki. I had to pick her up so fast lol.

Thank you for all this information. I didn't know about Chlamydia psittaci that can be passed to humans. I have some questions: 1-do you recommend senegals for apartment?are they loud? 2-Should we have a pair or a single one ?
@Loveofpets Жыл бұрын
I personally don't think that Senegals are loud compared to other birds. They do have a shrill like call but it's not the loud to me. Not sure if it can travel through walls. My Sennie isn't that loud. If you keep your sennie busy with plenty of chew toys and interaction that the noise will be minimal. Senegals are known for killing or harming their mates so it's best to get an already bonded pair if you can. If you get a second one later on after the first one they may not like each other. I personally say get one but only if you have a lot of time to spend with the bird. Another bird in a separate cage is a good idea so they can talk bird to each other. Let them out together if they get along. Just be careful with other birds as Sennies can be nasty to other birds. Hope this helps, glad you enjoyed the video

oh but my male is not quiet by any means. I keep him in the cage overnight, so he wouldn't destroy my rent apartment, and in the morning, I think my neighbors have blood coming out of their ears, as he screams so loud. So males are different and loud, but yeah, they are one person birds, and he loves my girlfriend who doesn't live with me, and he bites me, even if I live 99 percent of the time with him, he chooses her, he cuddles, he bows his head to scratch it. Sometimes he does let me scratch his head, but it's an exception :) But Senegal is such a joy to have in your home, I don't feel alone during work from home, he's sitting on my shoulder when I work, love it btw 14:40 my parrot is hyperactive whole day. Also, do you recommend to put something for him to sit on throughout the apartment? like some ropes I could take off, some sticks? he lands always on my doors or door frames and tries their hardness

@Loveofpets4 жыл бұрын
Kingsley is the best bird that I have ever owned. Much better then a Senegal. Senegals have such large beaks compared to a king parrot. Kingsley likes everyone and hardly makes any noise and is not a screamer so far. Not sure if all king parrots are like Kingsley but he is such a sweet bird.
@heathergerbyshak40782 ай бұрын
A king parrot is generally a quieter bird. I would not have a poicephalus with children in the house. My poicephalus bites HARD when startled. And kids move quickly and suddenly. They can be really scary for birds. I think a child visitor would be a bad idea.

Thanks Donna, do yo happen to know the name of them?I value everything you say and will go right out and buy it when my cold gets better.I too get nose bleeds and dry eye and itchy skin, plus it’s bitterly cold here now with 4” of snow for a bonus and Iam in bed except when taking care of my Timneh Stormy.There is an anti microbial on a shopping channel and Iam not sure if I should buy it.I always value and respect everything you say !

Budgies and Cockatiels are nice family birds

I bought cockatiels for my 8 yr old and the female is quieter and nicer than the male, but both make great family pets. She was able to stick train her, play with her and feed her. The male ended up being over protective of the female and mean so I don't let her around the male as much.

This is on my list for consideration, but the more I learn, the more I think Senegal’s aren’t for me. Also looking in to green cheek conure. Definitely a lot of research to do before getting a bird!

Green cheeks are the best. Little clowns and affectionate

Random question I have a cage that’s 31 1/2 inch long, 20 inch wide, and 45 inches tall how many budgies would be ok in this size cage?
@Loveofpets4 жыл бұрын
I have 8 in mine but they are out all day, they start fighting if they stay inside the cage so it depends on how long they will be out of the cage. I would say 4 to six is better as 8 seems crowded

I like quiet calm birds so I’d consider a Senegal. And I don’t want more than one, and that seems best for them. But definitely would clip their wings because they are so destructive.

It's not very good to clip their wings. If you give them enough toys and attention then they won't be as destructive!

Self cleaning ovens are also toxic. Although only when using the self clean option. Regular use of a self clean oven is harmless.
