After a (mostly) glowing review of the Sig P365 XL, I'm taking a look at its closest competitor: the Glock 48. The G48 (along with the G43X) is threatening to take the place of the G19 as the Goldilocks go-to mid-sized 9mm Glock. The availability of 15-round aftermarket magazines from Shield Arms has made it an even more viable option for many Glock fans. But does the G48 really deserve to take over the title of the "do everything" Glock? As usual, the answer is complicated.

Already too many oversized Glock mags, don't think it would be as big a hit as a 43 higher capacity mag... That is a market that would keep them busy in my opinion.

@@clutchcargo1239 The point of these magazines is that they're not oversized, they just fit more rounds in the same given space (and may be slightly heavier since they're made of mostly metal). So I think it absolutely would be a hit, I love having more rounds in a flush fitting magazine and I'm certainly not alone in that.

@@cdamauser1963 Most of those things are subjective. Ergonomics are fine by me, I know some folks have issues with them, but I switch between Glocks and my CZ's all the time (all my CZ are metal frame 75 variants, usually shooting a TSO) or a 1911/2011 variant. Honestly, when you go from hammer-fired to striker-fired, all the striker-fired pistols feel like crap, some are just worse than others. Glocks I can usually make "tolerable" with a $15 spring kit and an hour of polishing. I'm also in the minority that I like the Glock sites for what they are, a defensive pistol. But I make no mistake, a Glock is a good defensive pistol and I can shoot them good enough to stop a bad guy, but they are NOT competition pistols. Besides, who would want a competition pistol, you would end up shooting the baddie in the same hole 5 times, the Glocks make sure I spread the love...

They might fall out of popularity, but right now these smaller guns rarely come with red dot optics. A 48/43X with an MOS system would be a game-changer for me. I'm only 40, but my eye suck and red dot are a huge help in fast target acquisition. So for now the G19 is as small as I can get in glock line up with their MOS system. But I feel that's going to change in the future.

I think an aspect of the 48 that people are missing is that this is essentially the 19 for people who live in limited capacity states. I'm in a 10 rd only state, so this is perfect for me as a "do it all gun". Its already great for concealed carry, and if I slap the Recover Tactical pic rail with a light on it, it works great for the house as well.

As always, great video. I've owned two 48s and a 43X and they are great options. I even called the 48 my "Goldilocks" gun recently but since I was introduced to the XL, that opinion has changed. The Tactical Development rail and 15 round magazine made my G19 expendable. I sold it and don't miss it at all. 365 and XL mags are much less expensive at Osage County Guns, both < $40 for the next month.

Really appreciate your review! One thing I think you said that made me back up and listen to it again is I believe you put words on why I can’t shoot the 43X as well as I can the 43 as well as I can the 26. The shorter distance to the trigger makes me pull off target more with the 43 but with an extended magazine like an ETS9 round it fits my hand perfectly. There’s literally no change in the shape of my grip whatsoever from full relaxed to full pressure. This is not something I experience with the 26 which has the exact same silhouette. But then you mentioned that the thin grip of the 43 and 43X, or in your case the 48, makes you keep a tighter grip on the gun and if you get sloppy at all it moves around in your hand, and I think that’s exactly what happens to me. I am blessed with a friend who has a range where we can fire from drawing and moving and even shoot at 90° angles and drilling those guns there I lose about 15% efficiency with the 43 in about 30% efficiency with the 43X. Thank you for explaining that! And for anyone else who doubts the trigger placement I would also ask them to try and go from a index finger position to putting their finger on the trigger while holding the sights on target and see if they don’t notice that they end up moving more with a 43 then they do with the 26. I have lasers so it’s easy for me to see how much more I move with those smaller framed closer triggered 43 and 43X guns.

I like the Glock 48 over the 43x because of the slightly longer barrel, it shoots well for me. My wife likes the 43x and does well with it. I have found the best 15 round magazines for the 43x & 48 are from Palmetto State Armory/PSA. They lock back on the last round every time and they feed any and everything. PSA magazines may need a loader after the 6th round and the magazine spring is stiff to ensure good feeding and you don't need to change your mag catch either.

I had a 48 for a little while, but I couldn't draw it consistently because the grip was thinner than I am use too and quickly gripping was difficult (I'm a fairly average-sized male). So the G26 came back and the G48 went away. Also didn't like that the mags are basically incompatible with everything, which is a Glock strength point. I can take a G18 mag stuff into my G26, G19x, or PCC. If I take away Glock mag compatibility, I feel like there are better carry guns than Glocks in general, at least for nonLEO carry.

Can't be done but ... yes, that would be fantastic, I would switch back to the Shield in a heartbeat if they got the capacity in line with some of the newer guns coming out.

New sub to your channel. Great content and commentary. I carry a G23. I had a Sig P239 but could never shoot it as accurately as the 23. Every shooter is different so I’m glad we all have choices.

I currently purchased a G17 and G20. Thinking of getting the 43x as an everyday concealment option. I like the full size gun for home defense or camping/ hiking protection of the 10mm. The 43x would fulfill the everyday carry option and the others would be for more specialized situations. I like having 1 platform to learn and the no nonsense of striker fired semi autos. I figured if 9mm or 10mm wouldn’t cut it, then a pistol is no longer the right option. I have rifles and shotguns for things a pistol won’t handle. Thanks for the great video.

I seriously think you make the best pistol-related videos on KZbin. The Honest Outlaw probably comes in close second. It’s really an un-shilled comparison of different pistols with some quantitative and qualitative input that prospective gun owners need to hear. That said, the Glock 48 with the Shield Arms mag has left me in a quandary. Like everyone else in the world of concealed carriers, I carry a Glock 19 daily. It’s getting harder and harder to ignore the G48. I carry with a weapon mounted light so my current hold out excuse for not buying the G48 is that there aren’t (in my opinion) viable weapon mounted lights for it yet. However, the G48 Rail is currently available in Europe so maybe it’ll make its way across the Atlantic and then I’ll be out of excuses not to try out the G48 as a replacement for my beloved G19.

"Yes, yes they are"... Shield arms 15rd mags, and a metal mag release makes for a smaller package with G19 firepower... Have the 43X set up this way, love it. Still like the G19, but considering picking up a 48 for fun. Got a P10C, and actually like it better than the 19. The 365XL is another I'm interested in... Good times.

I should mention that the 43X is also set up with threaded barrel, tungsten guide rod, a flat face Pyramid trigger, and Talon grips. It is easy to shoot with reasonable accuracy. My Wife's favorite fun gun.

I think the G48 would make an excellent military service pistol, here me out here: It's the same philosophy behind the Makarov. The G48 is Light, compact, reliable and inexpensive. It can fall into the roll of an infantryman's secondary weapon, who would appreciate the small size and light weight so he could carry more gear. It would have sufficient firepower for those who carry it as a primary weapon, like an MP. Finally, it would be slim and unobtrusive for an officer carrying it as a badge of rank. I really think there's potential here, and I'll be getting one for my own experiments.
@kobeh6185
@kobeh6185 4 жыл бұрын
That's a rather fair point, as pistols don't really have much combat application anyway. And this pistol offers far more than a Makarov for the size and weight

No, the G48 is smaller and thinner so more difficult to shoot than a full size or compact handgun. The military invests almost zero time in training people how to shoot handguns, so I’d rather have a gun people have a better chance of success with rather than one that “looks the part” of an officer handgun.

@@bradleypeterson2208 I own both a Glock 48 and a Glock 19. Both are easy to shoot, and I don’t seem to notice much of a difference in accuracy. The thinner profile of the Glock 48 gives me a more easily concealed option than the Glock 19 (I’m not a particularly tall or large person). My preferred is a Glock 26 with 12 round magazines. That is, until I learned about the Shield Arms S15 magazines. Glock 19 standard capacity with a slimmer profile handgun? I’m sold.

Awesome vid and awesome points! I alternate a G19 and a G43x. The 19 points faster and I shoot better with it, but a lot of times when at work the smaller 43x is a better fit. My 19 is carried with a WML and my 43x is not. Good point about slide length and IWB carry. In the Tier 1 appendix rigs I do find the butt of the 43x can tip away more than the 19 (I have a medium gut that I’m working on, that doesn't help)

Great review Chris! Not that you sound like you are to interested in switching to the 48 but if you sent it over Boresight solutions and had Ben do a grip job and stipple, they eliminate the hump so it has more of a 1911 grip angle and the gun points more flat without having to can’t your wrist, it would eliminate that area that prints so much for you! Ben and staff do fantastic work as I absolutely love my Gen 5 19 they did for me. Rick
