#7 is: control words..People don't feel in control of their lives and one thing they desperately want is to feel in control or they feel there is danger around, he explained. So any words that makes a person feel that they are in control of the situation like"You are in full control of this..." or"You are in charge..." he used for examples.

because, now, imagine, please, thank you, the person's name you are communicating with, "You are in charge of this situation, " "You have the power to make this happen" (any words that make the person feel like he/she is in control...These are great ideas for having students write persuasive letters to an audience with a specific idea in mind for promoting a change.

well, maybe. I have always been a student of persuasion, since my college days, as well as motivation and influence. Because and now have value but only on certain individuals and situations. Your examples focused on minor situations of little consequence. I'm a fan of reason. Persuasion is most eloquent when we can get another to see things as we do, but, based on reason. Their reasoning. However, reasoning we instill with the persuasive power of our reasoning. In other words, it makes sense to them so they follow. Regarding motivation, in essence, people only do things when "they" want to. We can talk a blue streak but if they "don't want to" they will not. Ergo the child saying "NO!" Now there's a challenge for persuasion. Lol. I also have many years in sales and sales management. I trained salespeople to sell vacuum cleaners door to door. Now there's another exercise for you! Selling the machines was a walk in the park, I had an excellent trainer myself, but my job was to persuade people that they could sell them too! Persuading people to believe in themselves is the gold in life. Non-material but the rewards are immeasurable! Now that takes more, a lot more, than some simple words.

Another magic word is the word "Let's" because if you tell a person to calm down, what's their usual reaction? They scream, "I AM CALM!!!" But instead of saying calm down you say "Let's calm down." you'll get a much better reaction. :)

Hello Kevin Hogan, I really do appreciate your videos and are really thankfull for all your tips and so on an so forth. As I really see you as an Expert in Communication I really kept wondering why you "DO NOT" try do "AVOID" the "DON´T"!?, as I have learned, that this commands will actually lead to the opposite!?. Well, you know I am from germany, so I might be a bit more perceptive or struggled when it comes to the english conversation but in Germany it is said, that you should not speak or write out those kind of commands. An example: DO NOT CROSS THE STREET-as told in germany you may not give negative commands for example: "do not think of an Pink Elephant", to do so you first have to imagine how a pink elephant looks like. Hope you get my Idea and may be ready and able to comment on this comment. Best Regards Jan

lol..yes, i started to realize it after i asked myself what the truth was, i spent a few minutes everyday asking and thinking about life, i found that nature above all is the truth , had many revelations springing out of the attention i was now paying to nature ,synchronicities too occurred..then i started thiking about psychology and government..and suddenly without warning i began to notice underlying messages in tv and movies, was a little scary at first, but also quite interesting. cheers !

He's right about that name thing (and everything else, I'm sure). My name is Alec, but I'm called Alex so often that I've gotten used to it (mostly) and tell people that they can call me Alex if it's easier for them. If they do call me Alex, I don't think too much of it, but it always bugs me just a tiny bit. The more they say it, the more it drives me crazy. If they call me Alec, I tend to focus more on the person and the conversation rather than squabble over what they call me.

Hahahah well I gotta say it kinda works because in my driving lessons mmy driving instructor calls me the most arguementitive person hes ever met, basically when I make a mistake I have to justify it, even if it don't make sense, anyway, braked where I shouldn't have breaked because I was looking left for too long, he said "why did you break?!" and I said " BECAUSE I thought someone was crossing the road behind that car", then he just smiled and said "good response time".

Ha, great question/comment. I've discovered, speaking in different countries that not all translations of specific words have similar responses for a variety of reasons including cultural reaction. Because probably carries better than a lot of concepts because of it's cause/effect nature, but, it would be a stretch to think it is true worldwide in all cultures everywhere. Thanks for the comment! KH

Actually I'll rephrase that. This can, and will (most of the time) work on the unintelligent (if your not terribly unappealing). But if the person is intelligent, this wont work at all. For the intelligent person, if your not the kind of person they would date, adding a few words (that aren't threats or lies) wont get that person to date you.

Great tips EXCEPT the learning someones name thing. I have an unusual name which I do not use on youtube, and I HATE telling people my name who make me repeat it, spell it, talk about it and ask about it. Then they make me listen to their attempts at pronouncing it and seem to want a medal when they get it right. I would prefer someone to mispronounce my name or even get it wrong than to have to sit their listening to their smug 'look how great I am at learning names' thing. Dale Carnegie was wrong on the name thing. If someone is called John or Ann then of course they are flattered if someone wants to talk about their name, but people with unusual names don't all like to have so much focus on their names all the time. It is awful. And the more someone tries to get my name right, the more I shut them down mentally. I am not the only person who has an unusual name who does this, I know of others who hate saying their name too. By the way don't ask me to change my name, there is nothing wrong with it, but I just hate people making a song and dance about a bloody name and just to show off their people and pronunciation skills. Even if they are a nice person, people who make a big deal out of getting someones name right are so irritating and annoying I can hardly express it here, and they make me want to avoid them like the plague.

you're one in a billion - all people understand it's respect to get anyone's name right.. so as far as your effed up name or feelings - nobody cares - and you don't even realize that YOU are the one with the problem( look how much you wrote). In the marketing product world, when people are going to pay or buy something from you - you should ALWAYS know and say their name correctly.
