Hey bro! You can buff over them, it will help bring them back to life as well as the gelcoat. However, just use lighter pressure with whatever buffer you plan to use. If you are going too fast and using too much pressure, you can burn through them.

I do rv detailing on the side, but I'm not as good as Drake, nor do I have the patience to make these videos. That's why he is the man. You can apply most of what he does to an rv. The gel coat just isn't as hard and big flat surfaces offer a lot of room for holograms. I haven't perfected it quite yet.
@DrakesDetailing
@DrakesDetailing Жыл бұрын
You can buff a rv the same as a boat! Only difference is the sanding process. I wouldn’t go lower than 2000 grit on a camper. As for making the correction video, I was going to make it … but that camper was my personal camper and we sold it.. so as of now no, I will not be doing a correction video on it. Sorry!

NICE job as always!! Couple questions… In your other videos I’ve noticed you went from 1000 grit sanding straight to heavy cut compound, What made you add the 2000 grit sanding this time? Also what is the best work light do u recommend for seeing swirls/scratches/holograms?
@DrakesDetailing
@DrakesDetailing Жыл бұрын
Hey bro! The 2000 really helps richen that nice gloss when you go to buff with your extra heavy compound, and it also helps get it even more micro scratches. For light scratches I personally believe Shane supply chop top is to go to a link it for you down here at the bottom! www.detailusupply.com/products/shine-supply-chop-top-32oz?_pos=1&_psq=chop+top&_ss=e&_v=1.0

Yes you can! However, all the oxidation must be removed in order for it to adhere properly. It will be a little slick, so be careful. But it’s definitely a great way to keep it cleaned and unoxidized

Drake, great video...very detailed. Thank you. I am new to this using the Maxshine ShineMaster M21 Pro DA Polisher; attempting to take same scratches you have in this video out of my boat and it is scary using sandpaper. Anyway, I used the 1000 and 2000 grit but can't get the deeper scratches out. Is it as simple as more time, more force on polisher, more speed and more passes? any help would be great before i start compound stage....
@DrakesDetailing
@DrakesDetailing Ай бұрын
Hey bro, you can’t use a DA polisher for initial buffing step after sanding, it’s just not powerful enough to level all of the scratch’s out. You will need a rotary buffer for at least two steps of heavy cut compound, and medium cut compound to remove the sanding and scratch marks. After your heavy buffing is done after he sanding process, then you’d move on to the DA polisher steps. The DA polisher will remove the swirls from the rotary buffer and give the surface lots of depth and shine. ✨

Amazing work, as usual! Do you think that you would be able to do the same work without wet sanding? Would you get the same result if you do 3-4 steps of heavy compound instead of wet sanding? If yes I suppose it won't last the same time and oxidation will be back sooner
@DrakesDetailing
@DrakesDetailing Жыл бұрын
Hey bro! This level of gloss could not be achieved by just buffing. Wet sanding would cut down the layers of oxidized and scratched gelcoat more.

Stunning out come as always Drake !! Nice work I have a question on pricing I have watched all your videos on Pricing. I get the steps ect ect but that starting price is where i have a dilemma. I stay in Scotland and 90% of the leisure boats around here are cudies through to full cabins. For example i have two Bayliners that im trying to work out a price for one is Bayliner 2655 Ciera the other is Bayliner 2855 Ciera. These boats have about twice as much gelcoat above the rub rail than below. I can't go for the $10 above and $5 below the rub rail. How would you price these boats up ? Both under 30ft. But big areas of gel above and below. Would 20/15 work ?? Cheers Andy
@DrakesDetailing

I’d do $15 per step in the work you need to do above the bow rail and and $15 per foot per how many steps you need to do below the bow rail

Amazing work as usual! How do you manage all the corners and spots under rails etc that the machines can´t reach? By hand??? I´m considering buying a small rotary and a small DA but is that unneccesary (money beeing no issue)? Hard finding a small forced rotation DA though. If you manages with just a rotary with one pad size and one DA I should too. Keep up the good work! Daniel, Sweden

Awesome job, i did a full restoration on my boat using your techniques but i noticed after my starke level r application theres a slight haze only seen with a light at night that i can disturb by just rubbing the gel coat. My question is when i move to my foam medium will that remove the haze (again which is not noticeable in the sun) or should i do something prior to my medium/polish? Thanks
@DrakesDetailing
@DrakesDetailing Жыл бұрын
Hey there! I would definitely do a medium cut after your heavy, such as shine supply chop top (linked below) with your foam-wool blend pad and it should take away any imperfections left over that the heavy cut didn’t work out. However, if your heavy cut compound is not getting all the oxidation out, you may need to wet sand, then re-buff with the heavy compound, then medium, then and light compound/polish and seal.
@alltree78
@alltree78 Жыл бұрын
Yeah i did those steps starting with 800 working to 2000 grit. The shine was there even before a medium cut but its like therse just a little residue left from the heavy that my micro fiber, post heavy wipe down didnt remove. Thanks for the response

Love the details concerning product use. I’m going to do a ceramic coat vs wax now. You mention wet sanding evenly over the entire boat. I’m in the middle of repairing 30+ rock chips on my whip, so I have 30+ 1.5” squared of gel coat that I’ve sanded down to 2000. Otherwise, my gelcoat is in excellent condition. I was going to cut 100% to blend it. Should I wet sand the entire boat?

Hey bro! I personally feel like you’ll definitely run out of the 16 oz bottle on 44 footer. I’d get a 32oz bottle of whatever product you plan to buy if they offer it in that size. Try out Jescar power lock! I sell it right here on my site, and we carry a 32 oz bottle. It’s currently out of stock but will be back in very soon 😎www.detailusupply.com/products/jescar-power-lock-polymer-paint-sealant

Hey bro, if you’re just starting out, a DA would be fine. But as you grow in your business, I would definitely recommend getting one. It can remove deep, scratch marks from the rotary buffer way better than the DA polisher can.

I've got a 1978 33' Bertram that I want to finish in the spring. It's currently drydocked under shrink wrap. I don't think the previous owner ever buffed the boat, it's solid flat white. My question: if I do from the rub rails down before launch, then do the upper helm when I get to my home marina, will this harm the lower, finished hull? Can you estimate how much material I will need for a boat of this size. Thanks. Watching all your videos to learn this properly.
@DrakesDetailing
@DrakesDetailing Жыл бұрын
Hey bro! No, a lot people do that. It won’t hurt the bottom finish if you wait to buff the rest when it gets in the water. It’s though to say how much material to but because every gel coat of different in how it responds to the product, and how much product it’s going to take. There is a lot of variables there. I’d say start out with a 32oz bottle of everything you plan to use. Good luck! 😎💯💯

It all depends on your situation, and what your oxidation level is, typically you don’t work it that fine with wet sanding gelcoat. After 2000, trying buffing it with a wool buffer and a heavy cut compound and see if that takes the sanding marks out

I really don't want to buy a rotary buffer if I don't need to. I know it's a gheenoe and will only shine so much but will my buffer and some elbow grease give it a decent shine? Or am I wasting time?
