E-Bike conversion using EGO batteries and front hub motor

In this video I take a look at a DIY solution to converting a normal Trek road bike with 700C tires to an electric bike. In this conversion I used a front hub motor kit from ebikeling and EGO battery to make a normal bike electric.

I have seen bunch of reviews where they say they dont care for Pedal assist and they dont install it. I use Pedal assist 99% of time. And so will everyone if they installed it. Its a must have.

Agreed. Whole point of an ebike is to help not to make you lazy. At that point just get a motorcycle or a car if you don't wanna do any work. An ebike is to give a hand for you, but not 2 hands.

People who don't instal the PAS sensor either don't have a crank puller and cant get the crank off or they're lazy.

Those ego batteries look sick. You mentioned the torque arm instalation , I believe your missing what's called a c-washer between the fork and the torque arm . I have the same set up , fork,, front hub and power , I watched a million videos after my first install of my motor popped both sides of my fork in .2 seconds , on both sides , that's when I realized how powerful these motors are and went and bought the torque arm as well. Only difference is u used a c washer . I rode the bike tonight in Montreal in - 12 degree weather with my son on a bobike bike seat and it was awesome! . Your video is very descriptive and helpful on front hub motors, I must have watched them all over the last year of trial and error with different bikes and parts , but this is straight forward and clear . Thank you so much! I will look into the sea washer for my next build. The bike from this video actually got stolen about a month ago. It’s a bit of a bummer but it does give me an opportunity to build a new one

@@lavalabs hey man feel free to get a cheap gps tracker and hide it inside the seat, i have one in my bike so i could just track it with my phone if it were to go missing

I use 56v straight into my 48v Bafang bike motor. No separate controller, it's integrated into the Bafang engine. Over-voltage isn't an issue as long as fully charged volts stay below 61v.

Did you ever do a video of your rear wheel drive bike using an Ego battery? I'm using an Ego battery with my rear wheel bike but haven't found a nice way to hide/mount the battery or hide the controller. The carrier solution looks quite good, although for rear wheel that's more weight at the back.

Do you know if the batteries Battery Management System will cut off the battery when charge gets too low, or is it depending on the ebike controller? I assume on the tools, that the tool is communicating with the battery over the data connection to know when to shut off.

This is a really good question that seems to rarely get covered in any of these conversions. It really needs to be covered because if not many batteries are going to be ruined.

@@fleal6857 you can set voltage limit in controllers like magic pie. The BMS in the ego 10ah and newer 7.5ah are much better than any of the cheapo batteries. These are rugged built.

With the ego, how many miles you get ? Which ego you are using, the 5, 7 or 10? Your bike setup looks good, very clean compare to other kits I've seen.

Thanks Mario, so with the seven amp hour battery I can safely go about 8 miles and I come home with about two bars left. I try not to run these batteries all the way down or have them fully charged for a very long time.

@@lavalabs oh wow not amazing for distance compared the rad power 40km pedal assit at 32 km/h. I own so many ego batteries though even a couple 10ah. They brought out a 12ah. I find it strange that the 7.5ah doesn't compare super well vs the 0.672wh that comes with the radpowerplus

0.672 wh? I don't think so. Try 672 wh. Last night I drove 30km mostly on pedal assist 2 before the first bar(of 5) disappeared on my radcity 4.

I’m actually not charging on the bike. I take the battery off and use the standard charging station for ego batteries

FROM MY EXPERIENCE, TORQUE ARMS ARE VERY RISKY AND ACTUALLY PULL THE WHEEL OFF THE BIKE!

The motor pulls the wheel off the bike. Torque arms reduce the probability of that happening if you install them correctly.
