NEW MINI AND DAILY MENTAL HEALTH VIDEOS to help you deal with your anxiety, manage your mental health, and deal with, heal and support you in your relationships right now.
I believe there will be a collective trauma response for many people once this time ends, so here's a favorite trauma treatment exercise to help you manage your overwhelming thoughts, fears, emotions, stress, etc.
Container Exercise: (Anxiety Reduction and Upsetting Emotions Exercise)
*** Make sure you are safe to engage in a meditative exercise -physically, mentally and emotionally.
The Container:
This technique is useful for clients who have difficulty handling distress any time, after a difficult therapy session or who just want to try to reduce anxiety or challenging thoughts, memories, worries, emotions, etc.
Get quiet and comfortable if you can, like you are going to meditate.
If not, as long as you are not driving or near anything dangerous, you can still do the exercise -even if it's in the middle of your kitchen when your sweet family or loved ones are stressing you out, or the news (turn it off!) is stressing you out....just do it one way or another!!:)
Create or imagine some sort of secure container in your mind’s eye.
It can be any size, decorated any way you want, and located anywhere in the universe, real or imagined.
This container must be strong enough to hold all of your disturbing or stressful, sad, upsetting, worrisome memories, images, thoughts, physical sensations, sounds, smells, emotions.
Ask yourself:
What would this container have to be like in order to securely hold your distress? What does it look like, feel like, and what color is it? What does it look like inside and outside of the container?
Completely imagine all aspects of your special and personal container.
Now imagine taking the energy and all of the distressing images and thoughts and feelings --and putting them inside or sending them to the container, then shut the door or close the door or lid.
Add anything else that needs to go in there.
Now shut the door securely. Do everything you can to imagine closing or locking it - knowing you are the only one with the power to open or close it and you get to decide what and when to take out or put away.
How does this feel to you now?
The goal is to compartmentalize this distressing material for now - not to get rid of it - but to put it away for now and to calm your mind and emotions.
