I’m a sprinter (on a bicycle though) In bmx we train very similar to track athletes. I love watching track athletes sprint and train. I believe injury rates are rising due to foot mechanics, our feet are like tires on a car, you can have a Ferrari but if the tires are completely flat it’s going to be hard to go fast. Just like you can have big glutes, strong core, but if your feet are ducked out, and your arch is collapsing, your risking injury in everything from the foot upward. Heel down weight lifting training has become so popular as well, if you look at the foot anatomy, the heel is for resting, the big toe is for balance, and the balls of your feet under the toes/ outside edge of your foot is for force production. Watching a lot of sprinters run now their feet are not straight, and when they strike the ground their foot turns inwards. I still believe in weight training, but I also believe to always put mechanics first. The heaviest back squat doesn’t translate to the fastest sprint time.
@prod.Radiant2 жыл бұрын
I believe you! I can see even from watching my own videos, my feet tend to strike on the outside, my arch isn’t the greatest, and it can be hard for me to remain dorsiflexed upon landing, it’s as if my body doesn’t trust my feet to land or handle the full impact, so I plantarflex as I sense the ground beneath me. What would you suggest for fixing foot mechanics then? For strengthening the foot for sprinting? What about what I mentioned above?
@JulianSirian2 жыл бұрын
If you watch any Essop Merrick videos... he always recommends using weights only when you know what you are doing... and usually if you PB is under 11 seconds... (I'm surprised this channel isn't doing collab work with Essop Merrick.. both channels are good for sprinting...) Hope this helps...
@yomomshouse1002 жыл бұрын
ya i think plyometric variation with proper load management that is also specific to your sport is #1 for injury reduction. You should get more plyometric variation down first then you lift weights.
@philipgardiner67442 жыл бұрын
Perhaps the new spikes they are wearing is part of the problem. However, sprinters are always one step away from injury. They require careful coaching, particularly the faster they are. Sprinters always land on the outside of the foot, which then rolls inwards.

It is what the book born to run and the youtube channel squat university always talks, the feet are very important for athletic performance.

I have to correct you in one thing, in Italy unlike other countries most of the professional athletes are employed by military teams, like financial police (fiamme gialle), police (fiamme oro), fire fighters (fiamme rosse), etc Athletes employed by these teams they get a monthly salary exactly like a normal police officer.

Do calf raises to make ur shins more durable. Hamstring curls & stretching. As well as use arch supports in ur shoes for the arches. Learn from ur mistakes.

Nordic curls will save you. Before you start a running career get good at nordic curls. It takes a buttload of adaptation to build up the ability and it's almost impossible to make those changes during a full training cycle. But if you get the ability and strength first then not only are you substantially more resilient to injury just as is but you can include them in your training every now and then to retain your strength.

Do heavy hamstring curls. Stretch hard everyday. And after 3 weeks of hard training take an entire week off. There you go, i gave you the secret to never getting injured as a sprinter.
@Zen-t2j2 жыл бұрын
This is actually pretty accurate. I'd add that you should do eccentrics with the hamstring curls. Nordic hamstring curls are the best but very similar. But ultimately it's actually pretty simple to prevent these hamstring injuries that plague sprinters. I've only ever been injured once and I've sprinted for like 7 years
@statictech72 жыл бұрын
@@Zen-t2j I am not a fan of nordic curls. I feel they are just in vogue because of internet influencers. And none of those influencers have ever been elite athletes. And too much eccentric work will put on more mass then wanted for sprinting.
@Zen-t2j2 жыл бұрын
@@statictech7 They've been around for a long time. Being "vogue" doesnt really take away from them. They don't build size because you generally can only do low reps with them
@statictech72 жыл бұрын
@@Zen-t2j its still a primarily eccentric exercise and that will always increase muscle fiber size. And be honest, why did you start nordic curls? Was it because of the kneesover toes guy? Standing hamstring curl machines are far superior because you can focus on lifting heavy concentrically with little emphasis on eccentric. And its a single leg lift so you can build symmetrical strength. I appreciate the debate, not trying to be a jerk.
@Zen-t2j2 жыл бұрын
@@statictech7 I've been doing them since 2012, when I got into parkour, a lot of people in that space are into "vogue" exercises (I have vids on my IG of me using them if you really wanna see lol) Eccentric exercises are exactly what you want, they're the exercises that prevent injury. Because during them you're increasing the strength of the muscle at end range. Which is exactly where sprinters get injured, during the phase when the hamstring is lengthened, not shortened. You only have to worry about size when you're doing high reps. There's not much difference in hypertrophy for concentric vs eccentric. However like I said eccentric is better for injury prevention because it strengthens your muscles at their weakest range. Think of bicep tears, they happen when the arm is straighter, not bent. You can use w.e exercise you want with eccentrics though it doesn't have to be Nordic curls
