It’s Ted Lasso, folks! Yes, after many years of consternation around this show in the Discourse, many requests for review (and Will watching a bunch of that Good Doctor show and reporting back it was actually pretty ok), we decided to take a look at this footballing Yank and his relentless positivity. So, here’s our review of Ted Lasso and what it’s psychotic cheeriness says about TV and America.

I’m aware of the concept of suspension of disbelief, but just the mere fact that a midwestern American football coach is portrayed as anything other than a money-hungry sociopath was simply too far fetched for me to accept.
@alistercaddy1208
@alistercaddy1208 Жыл бұрын
My most favoritest move of those football coaches is how they repeatedly, shamelessly say they are going to quit to spend time with their family and then take a higher paying coaching or private sector gig or run for office as an honest, salt of the earth family man. It's like, you're one of the richest people in the state and you just lied to everyone about spending time with your family. And the cherry on top: a LOT of them don't even win that much.

I have a very good friend who is so stressed in his life (despite receiving what I consider to be a decent amount of validation, at least compared to me), that he has explicitly stated to me that he cannot watch anything that makes him even a little bit uncomfortable or that features characters being "mean" to each other. It only occurred to me now that he is the absolute target audience for Ted Lasso.

@@ChewyThomson I dont even think it's a matter of being 'soft.' The conditions as of late, particularly post-covid, are just so bad for some people that they just don't have much capacity left for extra stress beyond what they're already under just trying to survive under late capitalism. And its increasing swaths of people. The ruling class has already decided it won't yield any capital to improve the situation, all its going to do is start putting Prozium in The Treats. No decrease in how hard we're being driven, just more to numb the pain.

You forgot the most hilarious part of the Sudeikis prostrating himself in front of Olivia Wilde’s car thing: it was because she was about to deliver a dose of her special homemade salad dressing (not a euphemism, I think) to Harry Styles. Next season Ted Lasso should coach a Ukrainian team - then truly it will be liberals’ most beloved show ever. Generally, I find there’s a sinister undercurrent to Ted Lasso (I made it though three episodes and they were already treading water on plot). You get the vibe that every character is a villain actually and the show is like the TV spin version concocted by the characters’ PR teams. Like I imagine the Ted Lasso marriage had Stephen Crowder dynamics actually.

It’s the type of show that becomes victimised the closer we get to an election. Shows like Ted Lasso are very liberal - very much Biden propaganda - but unless there’s a need to criticise the target audience (I.e an election) then it’s left to liberal all over the place.

Ted Lasso is basically the male version of Emily in Paris. And there is nothing at all good to say about that particular show. The Europeans are not waiting on us to come save them from their ennui or their justified feelings of impending disaster with our cheerful “can do” spirit and soma-induced denial. They look at our gormless, grinning faces and wonder how it is a people who’d sooner give their boss a get well card than demand a four day work-week EVER had the balls to become a democracy in the first place.

I look at France, where the whole country riots if you ask them to work an extra hour and then you have the comment section under any Fortune article where people are openly blowing guys like Elon Musk for disrupting work by making people sleep under their desks overnight like George Costanza or whatever the fuck anti-worker bullshit he's invented this week. This show is like the polar opposite of Succession: every character is nice, and every mystery/secret trait revealed right away. No tension; no stakes. Just people being nice and realizing everyone has a good side to them. Succession had stuff left ambiguous about characters up until the final two episodes for Christ sake! Like imagine if S1E2 of Succession it was like “Also Logan had a sister who died; and it was the polio he might’ve given her, which is why his uncle beat him and gave him those scars he doesn’t like people to see!” Imagine how much weaker the rest of the show would be knowing all that right off the bat and having other characters openly empathize with him and talk it over with him and he becomes nicer because he got rid of his trauma.

My wife and I still have a number of friends who are perfectly pleasant as individuals but when they come together as a group just bring out the worst shitlib tendencies in one another. The last few years I've had to endure parties and get togethers where they'll bond over their shared obsession with this awful TV show called Ted Lasso. I'm sure these guys will articulate it far better than I ever could but my kneejerk position is that it's the perfect show for lower middle class, woke 30-something liberals. They're the types that hated Bernie in 2020 and still think working class people like my wife and I are pitiful charity cases because we didn't have a trust fund or get help from our boomer parents to buy a house. Anyway, Ted Lasso just feeds into their political mindset that conflict should be avoided and a positive mental attitude is all that's missing from your life if you're unhappy. It's the perfect show for anyone who reduces politics to pop cultural signifiers complete with ham-fisted dialogue and two-dimensional characters.

@@ChangedMyNameFinally69 Early on it was. After season 3 the creator changed. It then went more scientific and, basically, a show like Superman and Lois. Very “midwestern” and the writer who took over was the best out of the group. After two seasons, though, he left and a new writer came on. This writer began writing Biden tv. To the point where he became afraid that The Flash’s red suit made him look like a Republican hero. There has been a lot of controversy surrounding his run because he was too deep into politics while writing. The whole thing became: good blue team Vs bad red team. The red are EVIL and the good are the strongest thing in the world - if they stick together regardless of which “side” they came from, or which “colour costume they’re wearing.” The whole thing builds up to a side character becoming a new hero, draped in blue, called “Virtue” to come and save them all. Once Virtue is in the show, everyone joins together and the red team loses. It really should be called “mask off” cinema, as it really is present in the mask off era. To the point where the team, during the final season, are fighting “Red Death” and her team of villains and there is a scene of literal “masking off.” Around now there will be a lot of shows and movies with midwestern/southern villains because there is an election coming up.

The boys won't like it, but the perfect antidote to Ted Lasso is Bojack Horseman (occasionally guest starring Olivia Wilde). You know why? Because in that show, being a shitty person your whole life is NOT forgiven in 30 seconds, or even 30 minutes. Sometimes, people aren't forgiven at all. Narrative cliches are avoided. Past trauma is not an excuse for current awful behavior. If they'd get off their damn high horse and watch the show maybe they'd appreciate it. Bonus: it ends.

Is there some kind of advantadge to holding on to tension as long as possible? Is it evil to have a fantasty where conflicts are resolved quickly, would it not be worse to see them take longer? This is certainly the guys at their most dirtbag, I don't care for this show. Its just, wow this is jaded listening. I supose to complaint is the positivity is the toxic kind, or forced and oppressive and resolving conflicts but sharing trama is not real solidarity? Certainly is in my world...
@BigHomieGayAss1917
@BigHomieGayAss1917 Жыл бұрын
Yes there is an advantage to holding on to tension for as long as possible. Because I recently watched The Boys recently I will use it as an example. Part of the enjoyment and *tension* of the show is about Homelander, a fucking sociopathic Superman, struggling with his place in the world and trying to get some actual human connection because he craves it so deeply. This is made more interesting by the tension of the fact they he could essentially wipe every human off the face of the earth. This is heightened by the fact that he is becoming obviously more unhinged and mentally unstable, even laying out in detail how he would meticulously destroy America’s infrastructure and start frying govt. officials with his eyes. The fact that it’s almost written in the stars that he will at some point snap and start genociding humanity is part of what makes the show so suspenseful and tense to watch. In short, just watch the brief talk Alfred Hitchcock gives about the bomb under the table and why tension is important to film, or even tv in this case.
