I think these are Paratroopers. The Portuguese Army has 3 Special Combat Units: 1) The Paratroopers, 2) Army Commandos, 3) Special Ops (Rangers). The Paratroopers and the Commandos have been alternating in UN missions in the Central African Republic for a number of years now. This is not the first time that they have been forced to use direct action against different groups in that country. You can see other footage here on youtube. The Special Ops are currently deployed in Afghanistan to train the Afghan Army. Note: I think this mission also has a few Air Controllers from the Portuguese Air Force and they are possibly the ones inside the Helicopter.

After the collapse of the Portuguese African colonies many Portuguese commandos and marines joined the South African Defence Force. I was proud to have fought ( I was in the SADF 61st Mechanised Battalion) alongside these great warriors. (1983-1985) They were known as "Os terrivies" (32 Battalion). One very important point. As many have said in the other comments, Portugal has years of operational experience in Africa.

He was a Royal Navy test pilot and holds (and probably always will) the world record for the pilot to fly the most amount of different types of aircraft (I think it stands at 426 - prop, rotor and jet), the most carrier deck landings (around 2500+ during WW2 alone) and he was the first person to land a jet on an aircraft carrier. All that PLUS he happened to attend the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin and saw Jessie Owens win gold. AND attended one of the Nuremberg rallies. AND interviewed Goering at the end of WW2. AND was at the liberation of Bergen/Belsen camp.

You have done a very good assessment, it’s hard for us from home to fully understand the situation. I just wonder why they are bunched together, we never do that, in case a grenade flies on our way or someone steps on a mine. They might be shielding behind the armoured vehicles. For Portugal, this included, Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe (all of which Portugese is the main language spoken there). These colonies still fall under the protectorate of Portugal and Portugal will offer military support against terrorist organisations or any uprisings , armed insurgents and/or even armed attempts of government take-overs - within reason.

And We deployed forward autonomous troops that had authority to "command" their own movements behind enemie lines. Thats where the name comes from. And today it is widely used to name special forces. Even though in this video we dont see Comandos but Portuguese Para Troopers as noted by Dario Vasco and Roberto Deus.

It's a QRF, the UN QRF on that country, so they're always engaged or ready to engaged when called into action. All equiment you see on video, except for the chopper, is Portuguese, including the SCAR 16 STD, the FN Minimi Mk3 SAW, none is provided by the UN - The SCAR 16 STD is the STD "assault rifle" of the Portuguese Army. The QRF is made of 180 to 200 man, as a whole, not all operators, and not all commandos (even if most or the bulk or core) but regular army and some few numbers of Air Force soldiers on support to the commandos (the late two not seen here on footage).

Great content I enjoy your commentary. You should check out Operation Chariot ‘The Greatest Raid of All’ Epic story that is little known of a WW2 mission to blow up the dock gates in France that was used to service the Tirpiz. They bold os brass sailed a destroyer up the estuary in view of the Germans and rammed it into the gates and then spilled out shooting anything that moved and blowing up anything that didn’t. More V.C’s and medals were given out than any other action of the war. Amazing and need to be more celebrated.

You are wright, it's a drone RQ-11 Raven. The armored vehicles are Pandur 8 x 8 or VAMTAC ST5 and total force is 180 guys, commandos or paratroopers, in 6 months missions, since february 2017, in Central African Republic. They belong to the Quick Reaction Force (QRF) of "blue helmets" force MINUSCA. Commandos or paratroopers are professional soldiers and in CAR they operate by air or ground. MINUSCA is a peacekeping mission but the portuguese QRF operates too in peaceenforcement missions and conducting long-range patrols and domination operations, in bush or towns. Imbed with portuguese QRF there too a team TACP with 6 or 8 air controlers, from the Portuguese Air Force. It's a very dificult task, because they work with helicopters to suport the guys on the ground, but the pilots are from Senegal or Pakistan.

Would be interesting for you to do a take on the Australian Commandos and the upcoming war crimes prosecutions for war crimes in Afghanistan. Even more interesting to contrast it with the New Zealand forces that refused to work with the US or Australian forces after witnessing too many war crimes and nothing being done about it when they filed reports.

Why the Portuguese Comandos are in Africa?Cause most of the African countries are Palop´s , (this stands for Oficial Portuguese Speaking African Countries)! Most part of Africa was colonized by Portuguese, later Portugal gave independence to some of them, like Timor! We been also doing missions for UN and Nato!I was deployed to Bosnia in the 90´s for 9 months for NATO!And did survilance in one Nato base! Check out the Portuguese P.A. Air Force Police,GOE´s,Rangers and what is called as Comandos its our recent Brigada Aero Transportada (Air Transported Brigade) they mixed together the old Commandos with Paratroopers. P.A. vet here! Cheers from Portugal!

Sorry mate, What UN uses its one thing, what Portuguese armed forces uses under UN "flag" operation, its another thing, we went ther by UN "special" request, Guterres actual UN president, is Portuguese, and asked Portugal support on this This is Pandur II, initialy bought to a Austrian conpany (dont remember the name) and almost all units were build in Portugal, under licence from Austria. Then general dynamics bought the Austrian conpany, thats it.
