I almost had a Karen moment yesterday. I did some shopping yesterday, minding my business and walked past a guy stocking the shelves. As I was about directly behind him when I had a scratch in my throat. I cleared my throat and the guy looks around at me. I immediately thought of reddit and said to him, "it's okay, I just cleared my throat, I'm not a Karen" and kept walking. Don't know if he knows about Karens.

They're getting to be pretty well known. Even Google and Wikipedia are explaining it now. Wiki has the best one: "Karen (plural Karens) (slang, originally African-American Vernacular, derogatory) A middle-aged white woman exhibiting a sense of entitlement or white privilege. (by extension, derogatory) Any person, especially female, exhibiting an exaggerated sense of entitlement."

When I'm shopping and need assistance, I will first ask if they work there, unless you can't mistake them because of their uniform, name tag (and even then, sometimes I'll ask if they work there). If it's something easy like getting something on the top shelf I can't reach, I'll look around for a tall fellow shopper and ask if they could help me. I've never had anyone refuse help. Polite manners doesn't cost anything.

I used to work at Target as a stocker. When on the floor, people would occasionally ask for help finding something, but every single time they would first ask if I worked there, even tho I was wearing the uniform and usually taking things out of boxes and putting them on shelves. I don't doubt that some people are super entitled and terrible, but it must be a relatively slim minority, or at least they weren't in the small town I was working in at the time

A friend of mine tried to train a female an she claimed sexual harassment against him for accidentally bumping into her while pulling a kart. He lost his job of 6 years. If I need employee assistance my opening line is always "um, excuse me, I'm sorry but do you work here?" That way if they do work there a polite opening shows respect and they deserve you being polite and courteous throughout. If they say "no" I am still embarrassed but not as bad. As I apologize profusely they laugh a little and say something like "no problem". This does not make a funny story but I would rather have a respectful interaction every time.

This story is proof of exactly why you should press charges and also why she should have gone to the doctor just to get a medical certificate. I understand it may be different in America so it might have been too expensive. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure you can change your mind about pressing charges as well. So if she had said no at the time but changed her mind later she should have been able to do that.

Oh god Oh GOD THE WOMAN TRYING TO GET THAT BOTTLE FOR FREEEE LMAO. I'm a sommelier with a masters in business management, and oh boy. I havent even finished the story yet and I have SO MANY FEELINGS. IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY WINE COSTS MORE AT A RESTAURANT THAN IT DOES "ONLINE...." keep reading! Margins, markups and misrepresentation are the cause, but it goes a lot deeper than that. Most of it comes down to allocations, but additional reasons for markup include: quantity of production (ie: a mom-and-pop producer who make 300 cases a year, VS a megalith crap-wine factory like Gallo putting out millions of cases of wine a year); environmental factors (a "bad year" wine will sell for less than an exceptional one); accessibility (location, network, other resources), etc. So this is the most important point to address. Broadly: there are a finite number of wines produced in the world each year. Therefore, producers, distributors, governments, etc.... have to make choices about where they want to send their products, and how much they want to send. Some places get more. Therefore: supply is plentiful, demand is average, cost is either middling or minimal (ie: if a winery sells to a guest on a vineyard site visit, the cost is going to be FAR lesser than if you ordered it at a restaurant halfway around the world, for presumably obvious reasons). Other places get less. Therefore: supply is limited, demand is average --> high, with advents like going viral on IG/etc, because they're considered "cult" and difficult to obtain. Prices increase, scarcity increases, desire for product increases, price increases...you get it. Restaurants hold an interesting place in this dynamic: the interplay of allocation, trendiness, and networking all play a massive part. You won't always be able to find the bottle you have in-house at a restaurant online, even if the internet says you can. Its how they sell things. Im a little worried the karen in this story is actually going to fall for a nigerian prince scheme though because holy smokes batman.... the basic ability to navigate the internet without falling for a scam, negligent...

See? If you'd pressed charges the first time, she wouldn't have hunted you down later. They do not learn without real world consequences.

The story about the older lady mistaking the restaurant employee for the phone store tech really sounded more like a miscommunication than anything else. It is the ones who rant and rave after hearing you don't work there who qualify as jerks. I o now always ask someone if they work there before asking anything else. Last time I mistook someone for a hardware store employee the man was very pleasant and actually helped me find what I was looking for. He noticed I had on a cat tee-shirt and remarked him and his wife had found a stray kitten and didn't know what to do.I told them the name of rescue groups and low cost vet clinics. I ran into the man and his wife a couple of months later and they had decided to keep the cat. If people are just decent to each other most of these situations could be avoided. Little did I know a of mistaken identity helped get a kitty a forever home 🐈❤️

ALWAYS *ALWAYS* press charges, even if you don't want to deal with going to court. You can always drop them later AFTER the Karen spends a few hours in lockup and has to raise bail, AND explain to her husband why he had to bring it.

I have known several women who are too vain to wear glasses. So I think some "Karen" behavior could be attributed to them actually not being able to read small logos on shirts.

To the person who is feeling the need to ask employees of that logistics place if they have to wear blue pants, Why? I just don't get people who assume that just because they haven't seen something a certain way or because they haven't experienced something happening, the person must be lying. I don't get it. There is getting close to 8 billion people on this planet & obviously there will be experiences others will have that you won't. There is such a thing as different uniforms at a workplace. It would depend on if the person was a customer facing employee or a back room employee. If I had never seen a specific uniform that is different than what I'm used to & it's not Halloween, I'd just assume they either got a uniform redesign or that they may work in a branch of the company that isn't going to have contact with clients or customers. When someone is telling their story & to believe them doesn't impact my life whatsoever, I'm going to listen & take what they said as a probable fact. Granted, if I'm unsure, I probably won't repeat it as fact but I'm not going to question someone & kind of imply that they are lying because it isn't the same experience as mine. Why?

I like the first one. We have all been unreasonable and rude at moments. Stress in particular can do this. Anyone who says they have not, I don't believe them. Everyone on occasion will let themselves down to varying degrees. I have come across much unreasonabe behaviour since COVID and mental health is under much strain. This was a great example of how to diffuse. It does not matter that the other person is in the wrong it is being the better person. I am glad he put a smile on her face as clearly the pressure has got to her. Her failing though is that she did not also apologise. No matter how stressed she should have. He was owed that respect. Behaviour breeds behaviour and the chill relaxed and humorous delivery defused. Much better than escalating by getting angry and still making a point. The other day I was in a supermarket. I used to enjoy shopping but since COVID I vary from not looking forward to or even dreading it. This is due to other's behaviour, aggression towards others who are attempting to respect others' safety and disrespect for distancing etc. I have seen so much extremely selfish behaviour it makes me want to throw up. Well I walked into an aisle and saw a lady moving away so just waited for a moment to give her space to let her continue. She turned around and looked at me rather with a questioning, annoyed and rather defensive expression and was like what. I just politely said oh don't worry you are fine, I was just being polite and giving you some space to continue due to the distancing. She grumbled with a rather petulant look like a child being told they cant have sweets lol and growled I am sick of this covid. Her expression you would have thought I had insulted her or something. I thought in my head yes lady we all are and it may be an inconvenience but just get on with it and respect others. I just sweetly said back yes it is a difficult time for all and we just need to do our bit. I then left her to it. I come across those who do not respect distancing daily and it annoys me but what really gets me is when people attack people for actually respecting them and making the effort to distance from them. Now in my head I thought give it a rest entitled spoiled person, but I did not say it out loud or show any annoyance as I also thought or just someone that it is getting really down and she is having a bad day. Of course it is inconvenient but seriously it does not take much to make an effort. It is about respect and clearly some who do not show respect do not appreciate when they themselves are given it. Sad. What a self entitled world we are living in lol. In early stage of the virus when we had a lockdown except for essentials I had a much more aggressive situation and I did let it go but it seems now he could be arrested for what he did but that is another story. One thing about this virus though it really shows the contrast of the character of people, the selfish standing out from the considerate amongst us. It highlights it. Many people have stepped up and many have shown their true shallow and selfish selves.

One comment on the last story. Learning to sign can help you talk to others in a different country if the signs are similar. I spent a week in Italy and had a friend come up to visit me from where his ship had put in. He was able to sign with some of the Italians we interacted with.

You seemed puzzled at the 'I may be dumb, but I'm not stupid' sentence. I found the following and it explains it better than I can: 'To be dumb is to be unintelligent in terms of academic ability. To be stupid is to be non-perceptive and have no common sense. They are not the same thing.' The example given was something like - 'Hey, Bob - don't dump that pot of boiling water down your pants', and Bob would respond: 'I may be dumb, but I'm not stupid.'

After watching a lot of these I am starting to think a lot of these Karen's have Borderline Personality Disorder. Some of my anxiety attacks manifest like that when I am stressed and over stimulated. Cookie guy did exactly the right thing de escalated and kept things calm I hope he considers a career in mental health or nursing definitely the personality type. I wish everyone was as beautiful and understanding. Helping someone calm down especially a mentally ill person you don't know how greatful we get. Absolutely love the people who have helped me. So embarrassed about losing control and I always make that clear. Medication and therapy helps though. Maybe some people go undiagnosed and don't seek help for their shitty behaviour. I find it best to hold myself accountable and make myself apologise too. No matter how much anxiety it causes me just to really focus on changing my uncontrollable behaviour when I am panicking. I am hoping it changes my brain to "if I do this I will have more anxiety because I have to apologise to them face to face". It has decreased the meltdowns so it's definitely changeable behaviour.

I have been dealing with angry and difficult customers since 6th grade. My Mom had an actual Karen she for some reason befriended and my Dad was 6'2" and had scary anger issues so very little fazed me by then. However in 8th grade I started having panic attacks but never while working thankfully. I don't understand why they so often don't press charges on people who get physical because they will do so again either to you or someone else. You are basically enabling their bad behavior.

I have mistaken a few, 3 or 4, people for employees over the years. Usually it's been someone shopping at a place that doesn't have a uniform, and they're wearing an ID from the place they work, because they were stopping to pick up a few things on their way home. But, I always ask first if they work there, I never assume, because, you know.

I used to work as a waitress and a cashier. The amount of random people who thought they could touch me was fucking astronomical. I had a coworker who refused to serve a table after a guy slapped her ass. But the honestly worst offenders for touching are older women. They think because they're so cute or some shit they can just touch people. Like no, I have a nametag and you can address me as "miss" to get my attention, not fucking touching me. I'm so glad to be out of those places, the management would just be like "they just touched your arm/hand/back/shoulder with a flat palm and without asking permission first? So????" but would get mad if any of us touched them.

I work in hospitality and I can 10/10 tell you that your best tips and biggest rogue orders always come from the one who doesn't look the type. Two dudes in business suits? 3-4 Manhattans tops on that table, and nothing more than 20% tip because company cards have policies. Rando badly-dressed dude who looked like he worked in a Blockbuster in the 90's, and kept the shirt? Ordered a $1,200 bottle of wine from me like it was nothing. Expect the unexpected....and dont be a dick :)
