Ya know Mark, this story reminds me a hell of a lot of a Dr. Phil episode about a woman who was still hung up on her ex fiance even after he callously ditched her at the altar. She was STILL talking to him after that and her friends and family were telling her that he's not worthy. And the thing that finally got to her was what Dr. Phil told at the end, and it reflects exactly to this situation with this OP. (And don't worry, in an update she kicked him to the curb) But I think Dr. Phil said it best, which I added different things to speak to the OP here: "Now let me tell you I don't think you should make your decision based on what your friends or your family wants, cuz they're not going to go home with you at night, they're not going to live with you & your daughter and whoever you wind up with. However, I do think you should weigh carefully what they say. Because, unlike this runaway Mom, they're here! They do love you and your daughter & they do demonstrate that with consistency and predictability. I said "first off; who does this?!" Well, the person that does this kind of thing is someone who's emotionally under developed. They are someone who's emotional development is stunted at like 10-12 years of age. This is not someone that is emotionally mature. This is not someone that has empathy. Empathy being: the ability to put yourself in someone else's position and experience what the impact of something might be on them. And when you have somebody that doesn't have empathy, it's real hard for them to behave in a socially responsible way because they don't understand other people's feelings. So this is clearly an unempathetic person and unempathetic act that she's done. She didn't take your feelings into consideration or your child's feelings at all! Only her own. So do I think that she would marry you? I have no doubt about that, but it would be for selfish reasons. Because based on her past behavior, she's bound to repeat it the moment she gets bored with you and your child and just up and leave you again. And that would scar your daughter and you for life. And I can tell you this; I think if you go back and deconstruct your history with this individual, you're going to find this is NOT an isolated event. And you're going to be very disappointed and I think what you're doing is you are grieving the woman you WISH she was, Not the woman she IS."

Story 1: Lucy is doing the same thing as she did when she left OP and his daughter; she's looking for the excitement of the honeymoon period of a relationship. She's addicted to the chase of finding a partner and the honeymoon period that comes after...but then...it becomes routine. She doesn't want routine, she wants excitement. Lucy 100% would have left OP and his daughter again once the lustre and novelty of their new relationship wore off. She doesn't see OP and his daughter as people, but as prizes to be won. Story #1: Of course Lucy looked great when OP saw her again. I'll bet she dressed to the nines to draw him back in. Any port in a storm and all that. She says that she regrets what she did, but there's no evidence that she actually did. She actually said flat-out that "the best years of her life" were with the guy she cheated on you with, then she cheated on him, too. When told "no," she then ignored your boundaries and turned stalker. What you need, OP, is a restraining order and some therapy, both for you and your daughter. I seriously doubt your ex will ever get therapy. Self-reflection and accountability don't seem to be her thing.

Becky and James need to figure out that Thanksgiving isn't all about them. If they need special accommodations for the ENTIRE holiday then they need to either host their own gathering or ask someone else in the family to host and they can help as they're able. I had hyperemesis gravidarum for my last 2 pregnancies, and it was hell. However, I never made demands for special accommodations other than asking that I be able to lie down on a quiet bedroom if needed. The holidays weren't all about me and my pregnancy. They were about the whole family. It's okay to make small requests if you're going to someone else's event, but it's NOT okay to try to hijack it and have it tailored to your specific requirements if it's going to ruin things for everybody else, unless it's an event planned around you specifically, such as your birthday party or baby shower. James and Becky have already started down the path of Entitled Parenthood. I hope they can correct their course before it's too late.

Story 2: I remember having smell sensitivities to seafood and poultry during both of my pregnancies. It sucked, but I didn't want to dictate everyone around me. When DH and I had dinner with MIL one time, she wanted to order the seafood bisque, but was worried about making me sick. I told her I appreciated her concern, but to go ahead. I just moved to the other side of the table so the smell wouldn't bother me. I'd also explain to friends that if I put my hand over my nose, they didn't do anything wrong, just my "stupid pregnancy nose". Being pregnant is not a free pass to get whatever you want!

Relationships aren’t like books: you can’t just throw it on the ground and walk away for years, and expect to just pick up on the chapter where you left off. 10 years of absence won’t magically disappear just because Lucy decided to grace them with her presence. They’ve learned to live without her selfishness and they’ll continue to do so. Notice how Lucy’s response to OP saying it was up to their daughter to decide if she wants her mom back in their lives was “I’ll make you fall in love with me again.” She’s not even considering the relationship with her daughter in all these talks about wanting to come back because OP and his financial stability are her real target. She lost the right to call herself a mother when she tossed her child aside for some new guy. All she is at this point is an egg donor. That call-out speech was (Chef’s kiss)!

If you can't enjoy thanksgiving dinner at all, don't come, no playing games for anyone? How can anyone think that's a reasonable request? If you are that sick you can't travel I'd think. maybe that's what she wanted anyway and this way the only way she could do it without being blamed. These days she could just facetime in, no smells, sound off button, sleep when she needs it.

Story 2: What is it with people that think the whole world needs to bend to their whims because they're pregnant? Sure you can be princess for a day at a shower or even two if you have that large a social circle, but then get over yourself, you're neither the first person to carry a fetus nor will you be the last. And yes, I have been pregnant and given birth. I spent literally five days in labor that kept stalling once it finally got going, including one long night where I stayed up alone, walking circles around the house, sometimes weeping in pain and weariness, while trying to get a good labor pattern going, while my spouse got some sleep and I deliberately didn't wake them because I knew they would need to be rested to support me when the show finally hit the road. And you know what? Through all of that, when I had a craving, I got off my ass and went to the drive thru or the store. When someone cooked something that turned my stomach, I went into another room and closed the door. The closest I even came to donning a tiara was making my spouse clean the litter box (because it's medically recommended) and requesting my spouse get me a Coke from McDonald's after the birth because by then I'd been low-carb for eight weeks to manage gestational diabetes. If I'd ever tried to pull the demanding princess routine at a family holiday, my family's laughter and derision would still be ringing in my ears by the time I made it back home, some 2000 miles away. That said, I will admit my odor sensitivities weren't as terrible as a lot of others have described, and my heart goes out to people who DO struggle with it. However, I once almost got sick in the produce section of the market because apparently produce has an odor? Who knew? Something no one ever warned me about was the idea that your gag reflex can become really trigger-happy. If I kept ANYTHING in my mouth for very long, I could be in trouble. I made myself sick take my prenatal vitamins. I made myself sick brushing my teeth (many times.) I made myself sick MAKING MY BED by holding the edge of a pillow between my teeth to pull a pillowcase on. Pregnancy is no joke, yo. Still, no pregnant person is entitled to declare everyone else has to suffer along with them.

Pregnancy doesn't make you all that special. Pregnancies happen all over the world. And many pregnant women don't use their pregnancies to boss others around. And I can definitely understand wanting your husband/boyfriend to be as accommodating as possible, but I don't agree with putting up with mistreatment or abuse because your wife/girlfriend is pregnant.

My only question is how did the OP get from "no poultry" to vegetarian? Ham is somewhat common on Thanksgiving, as well. I get she already ordered the turkey and don't think she should have had to change, but I'm just wondering about the jump from poultry to vegetarian came from. OP mentioned other children at the party, so presumably this isn't the first pregnancy in the extended family.

As someone with BPD, that comment in story one is not it. People treat people with BPD like we're monsters and do things like this where when someone in a story is a bad person who did bad things, they slap the BPD label on it and call them crazy and tell everyone to run from them. The remarks about how we can't have any healthy relationships, that we're empty shells of human's, that we can't connect with people. Those comments are dehumanizing and disgusting and perpetuate a very very harmful stigma towards people with BPD. Stigma like this also very commonly bleeds into the mental health profession as well, with a good number of therapists and psychiatrics refusing to work with people with BPD because of those negative stigmas. No hate to you Mark, but next time when including comments with those online speculating about someone having a mental illness, please take a moment to really read the comment and see if it is portraying people who have the disorder in a strictly negative light. Comments like these are really damaging and also painful to read.

I don't even have the condition and felt that comment was a stretch. If I was to armchair diagnose I would have gone for narcissism or even sociopathy long before thinking BPD. I won't stand for this nasty stereotyping

Story 2. We hosted Thanksgiving for quite a few years. We had around 20 to 25 people show up to our house over the years and we bought almost all of the food and drinks. We didn't mind and had 2 to 3 dogs at the time. Some of these dogs were not super friendly and we put them up in a kennel over Thanksgiving. The cost of this is not trivial. I mention this because a couple of times we had people ask to bring their dog. Now we freaking love dogs. At one time we had 5 dogs, 4 of which were rescue and or abandoned at the time. We told them that not everyone liked dogs and that we put ours up in a kennel to respect that. In short please don't bring your dog. They said something like "Could we just let our dog in your backyard, as it is fenced?" I said no, again the weather can be nasty and we put our dogs up in an kennel. I mentioned I understood if they couldn't attend and I get it. Dogs are a big responsibility. They agreed.... and then brought their f'ing dog. I was a bit pissed but they just left their dog in the car, which made me angry also but the weather wasn't horrible for a dog. We then had something happen similar another Thanksgiving and I had to be more blunt and say that no dogs are allowed. In a car outside or whatever, do not bring your dog, cat or other animal with you. People were pissed. I just showed them the amount we paid for the food and the cost of the shelter for our 2 dogs for the day. This actually shut them up and people started to say that they had no idea how much food cost. I had to laugh, because did they think feeding 25 people was like free? Putting your dogs in a kennel over Thanksgiving weekend is cheap? Now we have one dog, and she is super nice. Ironically she is supposedly a mean bread but she loves humans. Humans.... you see she will try and kill any other animal in our yard or house. I say try as she is only around 50 pounds and a bit on the heavy side, so taking down a squirrel or rabbit is one thing, but a larger dog probably wouldn't happen. Now it is a bit easier as we can and do just say that our dog will try and kill any other animal, so do not bring one. Granted this hasn't been an issue for years.
