We had no idea what was in store for us. From insane views, epic water falls, venomous snakes, creepy campsites and Gnarly trails, this weekend would end up packed full of adventure.
This time we took on a new section of the SCAR to Lake Jocassee, Horse Pasture Rd and into the Sumter National Forest.
I’m Matt Brodie with Simply Must Go and this is Part 6 of our Overlanding South Carolina on the SCAR series.

I highly recommend picking up a couple of Exped Megamat 10’s; one for each of you. They’re pricey, but are like no other sleeping pad I’ve ever used. They’re pretty durable too.

Thank you! I bought the trailer from Tiny Camper Company out of Florida. The tent was a raptor Series Tent. You can find them on Amazon. I’ve since upgraded to a tent from Outland Motorworks that is a lot bigger and nicer.

You've found the North Georgia sweet spot, Matt! I've been Jeeping/camping up in that corner of the state for a few years now. Miles and miles of old roads, many of which are only passable with dirt bikes, maybe not even ATV's. Mostly old logging roads and/or cemetery roads that the DNR is obligated to maintain (I use "maintain" loosely). I also was disappointed with that graffiti-laden site which I was told by a ranger they'll soon permanently close. The other sites on the western side of Burrell's Ford are nicer. I'd recommend some just south of the bridge over the Chatooga on the Georgia side of the river. Not crazy private but sandy beach-like right on the river's edge. Perfect for a hammock on a hot summer's evening. God bless from Atlanta! PS, would love to see the GAIA map of your journey.

@@SimplyMustGo Just off the official route there’s an old dirt road called Beaver Creek Church Rd. There’s an old cemetery there with graves dating back to the 1700’s. That road dead ends at some private property at Beaver Creek, and you’d have to turn around, but it gets pretty technical going down hill towards the end of the road where it’s washed out so bad. Just a consideration if you have the trailer! May want to leave it up hill. Paralleling Beaver Creek Church Rd (on the official route) is Hilton Rd, which takes you over some sweet granite outcroppings, and has some great views. In Stoneboro there’s an old plantation house with giant granite columns. Paralleling 97 in Liberty Hill is a great dirt road that takes you by Liberty Hill WMA. It’s a nice long ride with some tricky mud holes. There’s some beautiful old houses from the 1800’s in Liberty Hill as well.

I've only done a small portion of the SCAR near my home. It's around Hwy 5 and Hickory Grove that I picked it up. I was able to do it in my '19 GC but not go very far when the path got gnarly. I re-attempted it in my '24 Rubi and much easier. I need to see more of the SCAR now that I have a capable rig.

@Tail_Dragger 2 жыл бұрын
Since no one else is going to say it, I’ll be that guy. Not having ANY recovery gear is not an option. For the cost of painting your top, or the solar panel, or the roof rack, you can have top notch recovery gear (unless all the items I mentioned were bartered for). Think of it this way. You decide to not crawl over the downed tree for whatever reason, you turn around only to find a tree has fallen somewhere behind you on your way back out. It can happen.
@SimplyMustGo
@SimplyMustGo 2 жыл бұрын
This is a great point. I really do need one, and I don't like not having one. I also haven't figured out which front bumper I want and my factory one isn't winch compatible. So, that's also been my hold up.
@Tail_Dragger
@Tail_Dragger 2 жыл бұрын
@@SimplyMustGo a simple tow strap and soft shackles can aid in pulling trees out of the way. Your hooks out front can easily handle situations like downed trees. Be safe

Is the campsite that got destroyed on Burrells Ford Rd? I think I’ve passed that turnoff and haven’t ventured down it yet because I’ve been by myself with no winch each time.

@KENFEDOR22
@KENFEDOR22 Жыл бұрын
yes it is, I walked down that turnoff for the same reason a couple months ago. The site is trashed and, per my conversation with a passing ranger, will most likely be gated off. That's what we get when idiots trash a campsite. FYI, there are nice smaller sites on the Georgia side of the river near the BF bridge.

very cool video, but I just don't understand why couldn't have removed that log with your bare hands? you could probably have got away with just chopping it off with an axe without even splitting it into smaller pieces.
@SimplyMustGo
@SimplyMustGo Жыл бұрын
It’s doesn’t look like it on camera but that tree was pretty big. No way I was lifting that. I could have spent time chopping it up with an ax, but I would have also had to stand in about 8 inches of water to do it and it didn’t seem worth it.
