Haven't heard the word "Lofting" in a Long time. Started in Boats & moved into Aerospace. Literally started at a Major Aerospace builder in 1979 (from which I retired after 4 stints) the day a major new Airplane cockpit section was laid out this way in the Mockup building. This was my 1st time there & surely the most enjoyable. I grabbed on to a Tom-Tom kind of guy & he was my Mentor who taught me everything.

Laying out pieces on the floor is how they use to layout plans for military ships in these huge warehouses at shipyards, so don't think of yourself as lacking in anything, your methodology is sound, and has precedence. Keep up the good work!

That is very true. I was mold loft worker around 30 years ago at a shipyard that builds CVNs. It was a great experience. I learned to layout paper molds to wrap around shaped material for making difficult cuts on steel. I have made wooden molds for shaping heavy steel and even learned how to fit steel on carriers and subs. The work at MORR is professional except when Matt doesn't wear his PPE and burns his fingers holding hot steel or uses his hand instead of a welding shield. I've done some blind tack welding many years ago in tight spots where a shield wouldn't fit and the welding facial burn isn't fun. I've also picked up hot steel with a hole in my welding glove. Also not fun. Not wearing PPE was a big NoNo where I was at and thankfully I didn't get caught doing it and written up for safety violations when I was younger. Just be careful not to encourage bad practices for viewers. Lizzy's doing a great job of setting the correct example and is becoming an excellent welder. I just wanted to mention that I have also seen the problems associated with the modern ideas of letting the CPU and 3D CAD programs do all the work. The CPU process is only as good as the designers using them and sorry digital geeks, but computers can't do everything and aren't always as efficient as some would have you believe. I'm now a designer and know when computers are helpful tools, but I also recognize that they're often used as a crutch that doesn't work in every situation. Matt and his crew have the right ideas with how they're crafting just be safe about it. I really enjoy watching this channel to see what creative ideas are brewing in off-road recovery.

Before computers were available, very difficult differential equations were solved by graphing the functions on very expensive, homogeneous paper. The paper was then carefully cut out, weighed, and the mass was divided by the paper density to find the volume and eventually the area under the curve.

Couple weeks ago we took a family trip to the grand canyon. Since we were so close to Hurricane, i made a side trip out to Matt's towing yard. Saw the morvair the banana and caught a glimpse through the fence of the wrecker. The canyon was incredible. My son and I were more excited about seeing the morvair. Hi Matt and team, just a thought on the steering after seeing the steering arms and track rod on the axles. The track rods are on the rear of the axles and hence the steering arms should splay outward not inward as you currently have. The inner wheel when turning needs to be at a greater angle than the outer wheel. Have a look on-line for Ackerman steering geometry and the diagrams should explain what I mean better than a hundred words 😂 Great project and I am really enjoying what you are doing. 😊

I do get inspired to design my own projects watching them. I prefer woodworking because steel and metal working tools are so much more expensive and I'm not crazy about the smell of metalwork. It’s a rope-in gasket. Old school way of windshield installation but currently used on some semi trucks. On a separate note, it is advise, especially with aftermarket glass, to run a tiny bead of urethane between the gasket and body and the gasket and glass. Makes it difficult to reuse the old gasket if it needs replacing again but keeps it from leaking, especially in this case where there’s a lot of body flex. Reused gaskets typically don’t seal as well either. Looks like butyl tape was on the old one which is another option.

hey, i just wanted to throw out an idea for steps so its easier to get in and out of the truck, if you use some heavy gear chain (like you would find on a liftgate or forklift) and weld one end to the top side of those rock sliders and the other end to a plate or some square tubing, i think that would make an amazing step because when you do hit it on something, it will just move out of the way, and it will still be rigid enough (in and out) to be stepped on and not just swing in, ive seen it done a lot on rail trucks which sit low to the ground when on the road, but very high when on the rails.... just an idea
@jeremyspecce

Hey, Matt, I saw you were painting on the floor with a string to mark the lines. I'd like to suggest a useful tool for the next time you do that... The Chalk Line. Stretch string, snap string onto floor, reel string back in. Refill with chalk if the line didn't show up. When done, hose out that part of the shop and you can do it all over again.

Matt, your middle school geometry teacher probably knows that you are a famous person that is still humble, and that you have helped many people grow in their business and knowledge. That you sketch out ideas on the floor and on cardboard is the beginning of many, many engineering designs. LeTourneau, the great tractor company had many ideas started on lunch bags. The EYE-crometer is one of the best math tools engineers and builders have.

Ancient Romans and Greeks drew out their monument plans on stone flooring. Your approach is perfectly valid. I recall a building contractor talking about trying to interpret an architect’s drawings. They could not make sense of the angles, so … “We just started nailing up wood to see how it worked out.”

Matt, you crack me up! You can't figure out the geometry of a plate but then you use a SPEED SQUARE as a straight edge for your headache rack brace. Don't worry, I'm 49 and just three weeks ago finally figured out how to use a speed square. Took me about 30 minutes of reading the directions and then a light went off. Super easy contraption for what seem like complicated angles. Keep up the good work, the wrecker is looking awesome! 👍

Lizzy, at least 3/4 of the guys that hobby weld, wish they could weld as good as you! Plus all your other skillz. You rock Lizzy! Nice Job on the design. Unlike most of the other vehicle fabrication channels, this channel builds things with a purpose, a job, and a meaning. So far the rack, tank, 5 winches, tool boxes, and a lot of the rock sliders all depend on those relatively small welds to the frame under the tank. That area needs lots of reinforcement. Thanks for showing, so we can watch! ! !

@ Matt's off-road recovery,matt dont know if you have heard of (grey light 14) so this is a glass that has the widow tint within the glass itself,I had a 47 Dodge truck that I had a glazier cut my door glass and back window glass then he sent it to be tempered for me,there's never any worries about scratching the tint, because it's mixed into the glass when it in it's liquid/molten state or at some point along the process,for me i loved the look and never had any of the windows break,truck was in my family since I was 4 years old ,I'm 53 now,wlofrw, is looking awesome glad to see Lizzie welding, Trevor is awesome as well as everyone in your crew, and thanks for watching.

@NBSV1
@NBSV1 Жыл бұрын
With a wrecker, and generally recovery vehicles, you want a reasonable bit of weight to them. They need to stay planted when static pulling on vehicles. With kinetic rope you want some weight so you get a good pull without needing a ton of speed. With a wrecker it needs to be stable when carrying the weight of another vehicle. Don’t want it to be super heavy. But, there’s a nice balance to it.

LMAO.... I just gotta tell you, Matt....I worked for a tool & die shop in Flint Michigan back in the 80's - 90's named Winom Tool and Die. We did all kinds of stuff but mostly we did subcontract work for GM. The last project I worked on with them was the stainless rear panel skirts for the '92 Cadillac Brougham. The owner, Tom, was a real artist...and every single part we made he first worked out by making a full scale model out of cardboard from the engineering prints.

I had an old timer teach me how to replace a window that had a rubber gasket like that. He lubed both the glass and the body channels of the gasket with Crisco before placing the rope in it. He also used a 1/8“ cord so that it wouldn't get cut by a small string.

Matt I love the way this wrecker is coming together and it should be strong enough to handle those tough terrain recoverys with no problems. In saying that there will be some issues with the build it's a given and these will be fixed and improved just like Rory had to do with the trail mater build. Best of luck and can't wait to see this beast in action!
