Thanks! You can also do a lot of this in any graphics program that has some similar blending modes.... and in VIDEO! I've got a bunch of tutorials planned that will show using the pattern-layers in After Effects and VJ programs like Resolume, 3D programs like Material Maker... It gets really wild, and although some of the reasons for developing these things stems from professional uses like separating artwork and making it into halftones for screenprinting, it can actually just be a great way to create these effects for visual purposes as well, or another use is to do "simulated screenprints" on inkjet printers where you can really control the colors in a sort of calibration-hack method, printing the image with larger interlocking halftone-dots of color, but you can pre-print and color-correct those values on your own to match them to a pantone or primary color points. Applying it to video is unreal because you can then like change the patterns over time while the video is playing. I was just testing it out the other day in OBS Studio to apply it to the camera feed in realtime, and the color-separation LUTs work that way as well, so I really gotta show how it works as just a layer-blending trick no matter what graphics app we are working in.

this looks fun. Makes me wonder if there is some pattern that would have a mix of different patterns in each channel to make an RGB halftone presentation of a given image with it applied on top.

That is in the upcoming videos... it already works on all three channels in RGB mode, but I just haven't shown that yet, altho I am really excited to finally be showing some of these tricks and techniques. It filters each channel of RGB with the pattern and then when the 3 channels are shown with the nature of the additive mode, it creates a 6-hue with black and white interlocking halftone separation pattern in 1 real-time non-destructive step. I wanted it to be easier to introduce and teach how it works on greyscale or neutral chroma data first before going into all the capabilities with color. But really you can try it out and see for yourself... with the blend mode set to Hard Mix and the opacity and fill at 100%. There is so much more coming soon....

Hey Alek, Here is the latest video that shows the tessellator patterns working in full color, and how it works through the channels. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKLVl4hprZVgZ9k The next question is... can we try to use this real-time tessellation technique in other color models besides RGB or CMYK? How about HCWB? :) I've been working on these things for a long time and so excited to show you what it can do!
