for whatever it's worth, when I was 12 we moved to the country and dad got a cow to milk. she came with her three day old bull calf which we raised for the freezer. the cow was half holstein/half hereford (however your spell those lol). let me tell you she gave the best milk I've ever tasted, and nearly half of it was cream. mom skimmed more than half the cream to make butter and the milk was still very creamy and delicious. we only took a gallon each morning and let the calf have the rest. we kept the calf in the barn overnight so we could milk in the morning. I tell you this so you know having a milk breed mixed with a beef breed is definitely NOT a problem...congrats on you first cow!
@ArtByKarenEHaley
@ArtByKarenEHaley 2 жыл бұрын
agreed! we had full bred Herefords and their milk made great ice cream. We didn't use their milk for drinking, just butter and ice cream. Very thick and not a huge amount like a dairy cow, but their main purpose was to breed them for meat steers so the milk was more like a fun bonus.

I remember growing up milking our cow, on our family farm/feedlot/ranch. Had best milk, butter, cream & ice-cream. Fresh beef, pork, chicken always every meals. Took a while to get use to store meat (Yuk) when I left & got married. Life style was a Major change but now 3yrs ago we moved out onto an acre of land. Have rescued 6 potbelly's girl's & 5 dog's fell like I'm getting back to my roots were my life was @ peace.

We always fed our horses and cows a little grain in the morning and evening. It was our social time. We never had to chase them or anything if they needed medical care. All we had to was holler at them and they would come into the corral. And they always had to check to see if I had something special for them. Cleaning out corn or apples or carrots. If they saw me in the garden they would keep me company.

Just sitting back in awe at all the growth, change, blessings and dreams realized of your wonderful family in a relatively short period of time!! I truly love how you plow ahead despite naysayers and all the "you can't do it like that". It's easy to tell someone they can't do something. Far harder is figuring out how you CAN. If you go with how you CAN do something, and then figure it out as you make mistakes, and perfect things as you go, then you're getting it, whatever *it* may be, done. If you wait until everything is perfect, there's a good chance you'll never even get started in the first place, and that does no one any good.

I supplement my animals with just a little grain for two reasons. One, I give them a natural dewormer and it's a lot easier to give that to them if it's mixed in with a mouthful of grain. And two, my pasture is not the best so I'd rather give them just a little grain and keep them in a better condition then to only feed them on pasture and have them to be closer to being underweight.

Congratulations on getting your cow. So many people think animals (goat and cows) can live off brush and pasture and than blame the animal for not giving enough milk. If we want the production we gave to feed them and you don't need to apologize for taking care of your animals. How you take care of your animals on your farm is your decision.

she is a pretty wee Jersey - poled and looks sweet natured - has some grain at milking I don't see it as a major problem - you could look over time in doing 1/2 grain and 1/2 alfalfa as it is the protein they are needing to produce high cream dairy and their are lots of options from cut up potatoes, corn silage or grass silage in a TMR form - I grew up on a dairy farm and my grandfather was a Jersey farmer - TMR means Total Mixed Ration

Hope is lovely :) Growing up we had a Fresian named Nancy and then a Jersey named Buttercup. Wow, that was 40 years ago and I can remember their names! I remember when we woke up one morning to find Nancy had died during the night - we were devastated as she was more than livestock to us. We used to churn butter when we got Buttercup because there was so much cream! I remember she had the most soulful eyes.

I just love that you have selected your first dairy cow. Your theory on having a mentor is the the way I purchase electronics. Everyone sells similar products and some service their prooducts. I look for the combination.

Jess, and Miah, Hope is an awesome investimate to your farm. Love Jersey cows, they are so laid back, and sweet (in most cases). I have to say, having the owner help guide you through the process of owning your first cow is an excellent resource. I have thought this way.... collect every resource you possibly can. Having resources whether a experienced person, video's, or books as a reference makes for an excellent education. Does your family prefer goats milk or cow?

Aww! Hope is adorable! And a baby too! I think what you have planned sounds perfect. And you do have the goats to supplement dairy too.

Precious Jess I know that this is off topic. But late yesterday My Precious 4 month old Baby Girl Pomeranian was playing in The Backyard with My Precious 4 year old granddaughter. The Sweet Precious granddaughter Bella accidentally broke Eva’s Leg in 2 places 💔😭. We had to drive to a vet 2 hours away. It’s my fault not My Nieta’s. I was canning Salsa from My Garden instead of playing outside with them 😔. I’ve (we’ve) been up all night and Your Video, posted early here in Eugene, Oregon (a few minutes drive from Your Now, College 😉) is just what I needed when I needed it 🤗. Gracias 😊

Ok I finally got to watch and love Hope and how y'all found her. I agree with knowing where the animals come from and even better when you can have a relationship with the previous owner. Sale barns are mostly cull animals very rarely get good animals that way. You do what is best for your family and farm. It's not one size fits all. Keep up the good work and God bless you all. I bless you till next time
