@@peachybiscuits The F-111 did interdiction better than the A-10 (much better) but not CAS. The F-15, F-16, and F-18 were all better CAS platforms but that's a different discussion. Desert Storm was 95% interdiction and 5% CAS because aviation destroyed the entire Iraqi army before the very brief ground war. Therefore, the F-111 performed better in the conflict overall, but in the specific role of CAS the purpose-built A-10 was better - at least in the 90s before the proliferation of MANPADs.

@@paint4r Ok so I went into a deep dive into the performance of both aircraft in desert storm and the numbers are extremely confusing and don't quite match up and give a concrete answer. basically all the sources I saw credited the F-111 with around 1500 TANK and ARMOURED VEHICLES destroyed compared to the A-10s around 980 TANK kills and 1300 COMBAT VEHICLE kills. The problem with this is that 'Combat Vehicles' could literally be anything so ofc it would make the A-10 seem like it was more affective the F-111 stats are more specific to armoured vehicles, stuff like APCs and I cannot find anything more specific for the A-10. So seeming as the only comparable statistic I found was tank kills and in that case the F-111 was better. But overall I cant really say the statistics of the A-10 are a lot more vague but it does suggest to me the F-111 was used to take out heavier targets while the A-10 was used more against lighter-skinned assets as its also credited with the destruction of around 900 artillery pieces. So in a tank busting role the F-111 was better that's concrete imo, but overall I'm still not sure for certain whether the F-111 or A-10 was better OVERALL as a CAS platform. That's up to your interpretation Ok that's me done with talking about my special autistic interest

@@paint4r Indeed. But the F111 did the A10's job better in desert storm, despite not being a "tank hunter". The 30mm wasn't punching through tanks, and the A10 lacked a good sensor suite to identify ground targets. The pilot had to do it with his eyes. The F111 killed more tanks, flew more sorties, and had fewer friendly fire incidents. I also want to point out that MANPADS and SPAA were issues in desert storm since day one, weapon systems like the Igla had been in the middle east for a very long time by that point, and the A10s suffered because of it.

9:20 No weight doesn't change how hard a turn is for the same amount of G's, G force is an acceleration result not force input so 24G will always be a lateral change of 235m/s regardless of if the missile weighs 1kg or 2000kg. What does change how sharp the missile can turn though is speed, so a missile travelling half as fast will take the same turn as a missile pulling twice the G.

This is espeacially noticeable when comparing the same missiles in different jets and airspeed. an AIM-9L launched from an A-10 or in a stallshot will have a way better time tracking a close offbore target than a 9L launched from an F-15 at mach 1.1. Despite being literally the same missile Think of the old F-16A flight model. Even if you pull the same 9G turn at both 800kph and 1100kph it would feel like the turn at 1100 kph is more 'stiff' because the turn rate and radius would be worse than the lower speed turn.

F-111 might have been a successful aircraft but the F-111 program (aka Tactical Fighter Experimental program) was absolutely a failure. F-111 was supposed to be the everything plane, but only ended up being an attacker/tactical bomber. Yes, it was very good in that role but it doesn't change the fact the US set out to develop an aircraft that could fulfill all roles to cut costs and instead ended up developing two different air superiority fighters (F-14 and F-15) and a very expensive attacker.

That's not how Gs work. A heavier missile won't pull more Gs than a lighter missile doing the same turn. However the faster a missile is going, the more Gs it needs to pull to turn at the same degrees/s.
