The guy is not joking. This is real. And even the methods. and no such thing as going Dutch, someone will pay, and pay for all. And will fight for the bill. The norm is the bathroom trick... pretend to go to the bathroom... pay the bill on the way :-)

@@sidPalma He didn’t mean to say it’s not genuine. The same in Ethiopia, at least up to the millennial generation. It is genuine, of course, but there’s that element of bragging, establishing “a name” among your peers or family, worrying about how people see you more than your actual check book thing to it; I would assume it’s the same in most eastern cultures.

This is very true, i have North African friends aswell as Middle Eastern and they also fight over the bill, some truly get disappointed if you pay twice. You can see the disappointment in their eyes as they argue over the bill. I guess it's not only a cultural thing but i think it's an Islamic cultural thing a good gesture in a way. They also have to accept a gift even when they do not want it or need it but they have to accept a gift because it's disrespectful if they deny a gift. Good folks.

Billie Hansen arabs are the people of the desert not the whole middle east but when islam spread so did the arabic culture even to those who didn't embrace islam the culture still spreaded due to the islamic empire and due to that there are 3 types of arabs old extinct arabs:no longer exist badou arabs:real original arabs and arabised arabs:by race not arabs but they got their culture their language they bred with arabs and basicly they are arabs the last makes the most of current arabs but never the less if islam didn't come this habit wouldn't be this extreme to middle easterns

So nostalgic! I'm Canadian, but this so resonates. As a kid, every time I went on a "fun" shopping day with my mother, grandmother and aunts, there was always a violent argument between them when the bill came for lunch, and it always upset me. Conflict stresses me. Once, as a teenager, I felt old enough and prosperous enough to interrupt and say, "I'll pay for it!". As a group, they all turned to me and angrily said, "Shut up!". No win!

Yes in my country, we fight over the bill and if someone comes over to our house, no matter who, we must be hospitable by offering coffee and fruits and if the time is around lunch or dinner, we offer the meal too and we insist on the guest to dine with us, and we have a guest suite annexed to our house as we shouldn’t let guests stay in hotels when they come from far away .... in the original Arab culture, generosity is a sign of dignity that’s why they call generosity “KARAM” and dignity is “KARAMA” ... the habit is however fading in big cities and more observed in smaller villages and amongst the Bedouin (nomads). so when I was younger on my first trip to USA, I insisted on the plumber who was sent by the landlord to fix the basin mixer to stay and have lunch with me, the guy backed up and had that weird look at me, later my friend told me I shouldn’t have done that and that the guy might have thought I was hitting at him... It was so embarrassing and I never told this to any one who knows me personally.

You MUST refuse at first then he will ask you again and again, finally analyze what he thinks deeply and if he really wants you to have it or not, then make decision to accept or not. A bit confused at first but you will learn by striving😂😂😂

LOL, my mom is half Lebanese and she has definitely threatened some of mine and my sister's friends with throwing a fork at them if they didn't let her pay the bill 😂 (Then again my dad also fights my sister and I about the bill and he's Jewish, but my mom is more forceful about it when she wants to be :P)
