The ending of this film reminds me of the ending of the movie Fresh (1994). In this movie the protagonist is playing detective throughout the movie, but the weight of the real life consequences of his detective work overwhelm him at the very end. In Fresh, throughout the movie the protagonist is playing a game of chess using the people in his life as the pieces in order to win, which results in real life tragic consequences. In the end of Fresh, the weight of the game he's been playing hit him with overwhelming emotion just like in the Kid Detective. Also in both endings the protagonist's are talking to their parents who are completely oblivious to the emotions their children are feeling.

This was one of the last movies I saw in theatre before the pandemic shut everything down. The guy two seats away had his shoes kicked off and was watching instagram videos on full volume. I have had lots of terrible movie-going experiences with ignorant patrons, but this was the first time I went to get a member of staff to kick someone out (and it took me about half the movie to gather up the courage). Instead of getting kicked out, he got told to put his shoes back on and spent the rest of the movie talking loudly to his friend and throwing skittles in my direction for ratting him out. Needless to say, my association with this movie is now rather marred. Glad to know it has the RLM seal of approval since I was so clouded by rage that I didn't know how to feel about the movie or the whole movie-going experience by the end of it.

I had the same feeling. But I guess it depends on who you watch stuff with. I remember watching the original Night of the Living Dead and there's a scene where Barbra, suffering from shock, tells the story of how she ended up in the house while Ben is preparing himself to fight the ghouls. I found it pretty tragic. Many viewings later I went to a rep theatre and watched it with a full house. That same scene with Barbra in shock and Ben preparing himself, got a huge laugh. There's a part where Barbra raises her voice, and then it cuts to Ben loading a cartridge in the shotgun and closing the breach. Still don't get it, but they found it hilarious.

Firstly just want to call out that the room-mate party scene looked like it was lifted directly from the music video for The Shoes - Time To Dance which IMO is a masterclass in short film making, so much so that I had to double check that the director of that music video wasn't the same guy who made The Kid Detective, re-using concepts or ideas. Secondly I'm not sure I was necessarily struck by the humor of the end scene of The Kid Detective so much as I was struck with sense of sadness for the lead, empathy for a sad man who's weight of responsibility for solving the disappearance of a 20 year old missing child case finally being lifted off his shoulders and being left a ruined man as a result. The antagonist said it himself during the final confrontation; "I watched you grow up with the weight of the entire town on your conscience. I always felt a little sorry for you. No child could survive that". Great movie.

Adam Brody was actually great as a villain in Jennifer's Body, back in 2009. That's probably his most notable dramatic role before this though.

Jennifer's Body Ready or Not Promising Young Woman The Kid Detective Not bad.
@intelligenceparadigm49313 жыл бұрын
@@luckyspurs Ready or Not was better than I could have expected. Jennifer's body is a very intentional comedy horror made by and for women, but a marketing team messed it up when it was released and the reception is STILL kinda poor because people keep going in expecting the wrong type of movie. Same thing happened to Congo tbh.

It's interesting that they thought the detective was doing a bad job when he actually does the best job out of anyone in the movie.

Ha, I suppose that's true. The police department in that town must be trash.

I didnt take it that he was a bad detective. In fact, I think he was very competent but his downfall was his over confidence. I believe that is part of the arc, when he decides to hide under the bed rather than the closest. The character came to terms with his fallibility with the fundraiser mistake and he then questioned his assumptions about the hiding spots
@5Detective3 жыл бұрын
I mean, the murdered kid's father does literally say why he's a bad detective. "You just go with whatever everyone tells you." And this was demonstrated earlier in the film when the punk kids just make up stuff about the local candy seller, who Kid Detective has known his entire life, and he just believes it and pursues it. He's gullible. And this is also highlighted, in my opinion, by him bragging that he always solves mystery films by the second act... Which isn't impressive when so many mystery films go out of their way to help the viewer solve the crime if they pay attention, which is just them telling you the clues, and you put them together. Unlike real life, where there's a lot of lying and useless information. And he got that other kid in trouble for the fundraising money, because he put together the most obvious trail of breadcrumbs, and fell for the killer's bait. The killer was testing him to see how dumb he was.
@lagarvikmedia2 жыл бұрын
@@5Detective Not to mention the terrible and complicated case of Grace. She was kidnapped as an indirect result of him screwing up the fundraising case. The principle pitied him for his inability to catch him.

He's not a bad detective, he's a bad adult His problem isn't the detective work, but that he's still an immature boy in a man's body, because he's been stunted by the unattainable standards of his youth and was never forced to grow up. As the principal says "no child could ever survive that". Every failure he runs into is because of the immaturity of his plan, rather than the stupidity of it. Hiding in closets, under beds, etc.

That father dude is also the UN Secretary General on The Expanse (seasons 1 to 3). Then again, literally 90 percent of that cast is Canadian so I’m not at all surprised.

I'm really curious. I just finished it too and I don't understand how the ending was supposedly funny. I liked the movie, but I must've skipped a beat where a paying off joke comes in, because the ending just felt kind of sad to me. Can you explain it without spoiling it to other people?

@@OtaconAmiibo Oh cool. I mean, [SPOILERS] . . . . . . . . I just saw someone finally grieiving after many, many years of living in denial. It was touching, but I didn't see anything funny in it.

@@gybe808 Hi i'll try to answer this as best as i can. I think think the RedLetter Team used the wrong term by saying it was the best "Payoff" they'd seen which assumes its going to be an obvious joke i.e the end of THEY LIVE where the couple are having sex and the Alien having his disguise removed and he's like "Hey what's wrong Baby!". The ending of THE KID DETECTIVE is a lot more subtle and won't necessarily be a funny moment to every one so it's open to interpretation. I think the reason that Mike and Jay found it funny is that our main character finally breaks down and has his moment right at the end of film where years of repressed emotions especially towards his parents takes place in what should be a very sad and intense moment, which is broken by cutting to Credits and the Nancy Sinatra Bubblegum Pop Song "Sugar Town" which negates his Emotional break down scene. So i guess the comedy of it is that he dosen't even get to have his "Moment".

Remember when a random person smiles and says hello to the Kid Detective on the street. This is the moment that makes it impossible for the last scene to be funny.
