OKAY...regarding Colleen. *Deep Breath* #1 - I'm a performer. What Rihanna did at the Super Bowl took some serious energy and stamina. There was no half-a** about it, pregnant or not. That 15 minutes required more energy than most of us use in an entire day. #2 - That being said, this performance was in the works for months, and Rihanna had an army of people helping her prepare for it. I expect there was a medical team monitoring her along the way, and she had every resource she could possibly need. Stand-ins during rehearsals allowed her to rest when she needed to. She likely took rest time in the days before and after the performance. This is along the lines of these reps saying "You have the same number of hours every day as Beyoncé." Hours yes, but resources NO! It's not the same, folks. Colleen represents everything that is toxic about MLM and hustle culture. It's maddening.

I like the comment that points out that Rihanna has an actual team behind her. Was she an absolute boss for that show? Yup! But it’s very likely she has a nanny or childcare dedicated to her child, she has assistants, publicists, and certainly dozens of other people to get everything done. Saying that “oh if she did this, you can too” ignores how much money, privilege, and moving parts went into that show and how not accessible that is to most women- especially the type of women targeted by MLMs.

There’s a crucial thing mentioned in Colleen’s response that it seems people are overlooking. It really caught my attention and I feel it can explain her response. She mentioned her friend called her up and said “solidarity”. To me, this may be why she’s doubling down. She’s surrounded by Yes-men. People who are simply there to agree with everything she says. True friends can lovingly point out when you’ve messed up. And that opinion is going to be listened to much more than the sentiments of people online. Of course she thinks she’s right, everyone around her is TELLING HER she’s right! So unfortunately, until people in her immediate circle hold her accountable…I don’t think her internet followers are going to be able to change her mind.

there is a great book called Burnout by Emily Nagoski that expresses the issues with hustle culture within women in particular in a very comprehensive way! it breaks down the mindset of women feeling they need to work twice as hard, put others needs before their own, and as a result feel entirely burnt out from this constant cycle, and i think it’s a great read for anyone struggling with workaholic self-sacrificial tendencies and without coming off as privileged like many self-help books do (i.e. it’s not as easy as “just working less” for those who need to work to afford a living, etc.)

Yo, I LOVE that even the huns are calling out Colleen’s “if Riri can do it you can do it” nonsense. That gives me hope that maybe people in MLMs will start to see even more red flags and think more critically.

A very long time ago, I was working my first job out of college. I hated it. One day, the Mary Kay rep came in to the office and I listened to her spiel, bought a few things, and that was it. I did really like the makeup and she came in again and I was ripe for the picking. I seriously considered becoming a rep, even though the sales kits were expensive and I didn't make that much. The least expensive one was $400. She was a top seller and had earned several pink cars. She invited me to her house for a meeting with all of her underlings. Each woman stood up and gave an account of their sales for the week. This woman absolutely ANNHILIATED anyone who's sales were not to her standards. I mean berated, name called, cursed at, it was BRUTAL. I left and never looked back. This was in the early 90s. Now, it sucks because everyone harasses their Facebook friends about buying low quality makeup, over priced pizza stones or weight loss supplements.

On the Plexus reel: those are probably fast start bonus checks and are not the norm. Her team probably saw some momentum in December and worked their butts off to get those checks. But it won’t be the same every month.

And to be clear: Rihanna has a veritable army of people who work for her. Maids, house manager, cooks, assistants galore. When i was pregnant, I had none of that. Still don’t, actually. Comparing the regular American to A-list celebs is patently ridiculous.

there's a massive difference between doing a single performance with the help of an entire team for a guaranteed multi-million dollar check, vs running yourself to exhaustion hoping you'll one day break even. it's wild to me that one of the lies mlms hook people on is '9-5s will work you to death, join an mlm to escape that rat race' and then as soon as people join all these mlm crazies are like 'well if you're not successful it's because you're working less than 80 hours a week, so it's your fault'. like they can't even pick their lies consistently.

Hannah you pointed out that we give male performers accolades for doing the bare minimum and I COMPLETELY second that. Men tend to get away with doing less while women have to go above and beyond. Sucks that Colleen seems to be buying into that train of thought.
@Shudderetal Жыл бұрын
Not saying it couldn't be, but I don't think that it's a strong point without an example. Off the top of my head, I can't think of a man who is praised for his performance while not playing an instrument, not singing/rapping live, and not dancing (if relevant). Obviously pregnancy complicates things, but I also don't think people were wrong for expecting more out of a woman who is one of the top performers in the world, despite not putting out an album in years. It's not people expecting too much out of women, it's that people hold Rihanna to an exceptionally high standard.
@babyvia6712 Жыл бұрын
@@Shudderetal it’s that people hold women to a high standard and Rihanna. If you can’t find an example, go look for one and quit being contrarian if you have no actual basis to be. I don’t really care what you think of the point off the top of MY head.
@Shudderetal Жыл бұрын
Oh no worries, I figured as much. I just thought since you spoke with such conviction you may have a few examples to offer up. All I'm finding on Google is Milli Vanilli and they're hardly a comparable act.

I’m curious how many hours per week these top 1% are “working”? If you make $50k per year (before taxes) but you end up working nights, weekends, 70+ hours per week, that probably ends up being less than minimum wage. I do not understand how anyone this this is “good money”. This makes me exhausted just thinking about working that hard for commission only.

Could the Tiber River thing be BECAUSE they're beginning the online shop only thing? They were likely used to not having as much inventory (I don't know how they did the distribution to their reps) and now have much more that they need to put somewhere. Maybe there's extra costs for something like warehouse space they need, and they used money that was supposed to go to the reps? I'm an author and my former indie publisher did this thing handful of years back, where they took money that should've been in escrow, waiting to be paid for authors at the end of the quarter, and used it to some building projects. They're still in operation and signing up new authors and they still owe tens, probably hundreds of thousands to the authors who left after a long period of not being paid on time or at all. They banked on the small authors who are owed a few thousand or less not wanting the hassle of suing them because it would get more expensive than what they're owed. So maybe that's what this MLM is doing as well? I assume the money they owe to these poor reps is very small amounts for most of them? They're hoping they won't get sued because it's not worth it?

A lot of firefighters work a second job/ are members of a volunteer-only fire department, and given how their shifts are based around 24-hour schedules, I can absolutely see them making prime MLM targets. “Work on your days off!” “Post when you’re waiting for calls!” “You’re always meeting new people to pitch!” Someone definitely got fed up and fired back.

That Tiber River sounds like a company that pulled a scam recently in my area. Long story short, I and several hundred others got let go when our contract ended at my employer. A new company opened in our area, ironically enough, I seem to recall it was an employment agency. Several of my colleagues started working at the new company, and a few months later, they showed up, and the place was shut down. Lights off, building locked, sign on the door saying "sorry "! And they didn't get their last paychecks.

I find Tiber River's way of paying their reps that final time to be sweet irony. Is it legal? Probably depends on the fine print, which might say something meaning "Company reserves the right to change pay plan at any time without notice" or something like that. It is common for MLM's to have loopholes like that in the application that all reps sign.
@debramccord7707 Жыл бұрын
I’m sure they will be surprised when they examine the fine print of their contract which always works in the favor of the scheme.

Just did the math. Working at a grocery store for minimum wage ($15/hr where I am) for one 8 hour shift a week with 5 weeks vacation STILL earns you more than the top 10% of Plexus who I imagine are hustling over 40 hours a week for mere pennies. Also, they don't include that fact that reps still have to pay income tax on top of their non-living wages.

I’m not familiar with Canadian employment law, but I’m fairly certain, based on US employment law, you legally cannot change the currency with which someone is paid. Canadian employment lawyers are probably getting in fistfights over who gets to represent the inevitable class action lawsuit.
