Thanks again. I have a FX Dream Lite, Hatsan QE Long and Hatsan BullBoss that I normally shoot in my back yard. I normally keep a 3k psi bottle of nitrogen in my shop to gas them up with but due to being a old Vet from VN and health problems I wasn't able to get it refilled so I bought the Gamo Mag a couple weeks ago to keep the critters out of my pecan trees, and sure enough it is to loud for my backyard. I have been researching like crazy trying to figure out how to quiet it down. The only thing I saw on youtube was use heavier pellets, but I wanted it quite all the time. Finally I came back to your channel and found your Podcast on Moderators, Suppressors, Silencers, and LCD's. You educatated me considerably on the subject of silence. I am now getting in contact with DonnyFL and see what he recommends. Thanks Tons once again. Marine Corp DI SGT R.D. Williams etc etc

My experience with my HP .22 air rifle with a shrouded "moderated" barrel was pretty bad. It was making a huge bang while shooting at the backyard, which was making me uncomfortable to use around my neighbors. So I bought a DonnyFL shogun and the bang was lower now, but it was still loud. My son with the same rifle and "suppresser" went from a big bang to a quiet thumb. So I was confused. then I noticed that the vent holes in the shroud was causing the loud noise when shooting, and my son's rifle, which is same as mine didn't have the vent holes. So I covered them with a duct tape, and what do you know, the loud bang became a quiet thumb as well. Now I can shoot all day without bothering my neighbors. I was using a sound meter too. and as you mentioned in the video, the dB didn't change as much, but in reality the rifle became silent beyond 5 yards. You got a new subscriber. Cheers.

Doc knows what he is talking about. I’ve seen to many camera themes in the air gun genre. Just because we’ve purchased a camera doesn’t make us an expert. I think everyone is purchasing vlog equipment and then trying to find a niche fad that hasn’t been exploited yet. The result is at a commercial expectation. Very few individuals are putting solid usable information out there within their content. I saw a video where the actual designer of the suppressor was explaining how a certain variant of their product doesn’t not go well with a certain air gun because the fill connector would not be accessible. And so you should use these models because they will allow room for the fill connector to be accessible. Nothing was mentioned about how they will perform with that particular rifles setup. Another individual was performing a modification to his barrel because he thought the size of the barrel on that particular rifle was excessive and made it look undesirable. Do we purchase these mechanisms because of how they look ? Or is it how they perform ? According to him there was not going to be any sacrifice in performance. But as I was watching the work take place , there was no way the barrel will be true. The Doc here brings up a good point. The suppressor is designed to cut down decibels extending out in a lateral direction and not so much in a parallel direction. And most of these sound test take place in the latter. So we aren’t really getting a complete result through the testing. Maybe we should change and add that to a standard when testing suppressors in the future. Because we aren’t going to aim our barrels at our neighbors house. Most of the time we would be targeting towards the back of our property away from the dwelling’s. 👍
@russjones64974 ай бұрын
Rajj ... thanks for your input ... we agree. We also believe that more important than reducing decibels .... a suppressor changes the sound. Someone with a boom box in their car passing by your home is heard, but doesnt bring the concern that a gun shot does.... so changing the crack sound to more of a thud sound is important. Even more important is the zing sound as a bullet or a pellet exceeds the speed of sound (1050 feet per second). This zing sound scares neighbors the most and is not helped by a suppressor..... you can only bring down your pellet speed below 1050 to do that. Powder guns with silencers have to use sub-sonic ammo to eliminate the zing sound. Dr. Russ

@@drsrussandpaula the Taurus gives the benjamin almost double the range and power of a stock bulldog. it allows for the taking of larger game at a greater distance. the Taurus is a limited production and I received the last one. but not all is lost as the bulldozer version is plentiful. and it is a good powerhouse with 300+fpe, increasing the BD range and power by a third. The cost of the Taurus upgrade is $2150 if they furnish the bulldog. sending them your BD will cost you $1251. the bulldozer is $1559 with their gun, $751 if you furnish your own BD. Veradium Air is an excellent air gun gunsmith for many air rifles. highly recommended by Mr. Hollowpoint. you very much for your class on suppressors and silencers, two questions, I have 0.25 sumatra rifles; 9 and 12.7 mm, the three at maximum speed exceed 90 decibels, could it be that there is a suppressor that I can use that takes the noise to no more than 55 decibels? second question: does the use of a suppressor decrease the accuracy and speed of air guns? Eugenio Reyes ... Hola .... suppressors do not change the velocity ... changing the power ... or changing the weight of the pellet or slug can do that. Dr. Russ, I recently purchased a Sam Yang (Seneca) Dragon Claw .50cal air gun and had a reputable independent suppressor maker make me a 10 inch can for it. The Dragon Claw has two power settings that provide roughly 80FPS difference in speed, 680fps vs 600fps with a 210gr slug(per Pyramyd Air testing). Can I shoot this rifle with the suppressor installed on both power levels? The maker said it was designed for high power only, and do not shoot roundball through it, but with the wide variety in weights of ammo from 177gr roundball up to 400gr slugs, I can't see how a round could drop enough on low power in 10 inches to clip the internals. I trust this maker very much but I do not understand how it could make such a difference. I may very well be wrong though, you don't know what you don't know until you know :)

Mr. Rob ... it is touch for me to understand too. With respect, it is about both the sound level and the sound characteristics. If your moderator vendor tells you otherwise he is probably compensating for something. Consider the measurement of effiency ... dB/CC. That is important. How do we find that? (dB (naked) - dB (moderated))/CC(lvolume) That number speaks volumes. Great video.

Nontimebomala2267 .... thanks for sharing with us your knowledge about sound.... I am not an expert on suppressors ... but if you watch all of our videos on the subject ... Donny Du shows and describes the use of his db meter in his shop ... describing that the sound level is still part of his analyses on producing suppressors ... and being one of the largest producers of same in the U.S. ... even FX includes his suppressors on several of their air guns and they are considered one of the best in the air gun manufacturing industry. My comment is simply that if you hear a car go down your street with a boom box booming ... it is not a threatening sound to most people and few if any call the police ... and thus changing the sound of any gun from the sharp bang ... crack ... zing ... that they make is a key goal in any suppressor. It has also been my experience using a db meter myself is that few suppressors ... actually reduce the level of an air guns sound.... they just change it. Dr. Russ

Stephen ... It is good to hear from you ... I dont know of one off hand ... but if you contact Zach Matthews in Georgia ( his contact info is in several of our videos ) he might know of one since he also distributes Airforce air guns... Dr. Russ

My favorite air gun is usually the last air gun I purchased... and my favorite caliber is 25 caliber... it seems perfect for my backyard and the destructive critters that come there. Served in Vietnam during the 1968 Tet Offensive... lost a third of my 44 man infantry platoon as a first lieutenant platoon leader. Shot 3 times and still carry a bullet in my left shoulder that the doctors didn't want to take out... all over 50 years ago.... Mustang Chef ... thanks for sharing your background too.... looks like you are getting to see the world too ... and I hope you share your air gun experiences with our viewers so that everyone becomes air gun sharp. Part 2 of my suppressor video comes out later today... and another about getting into business with your air gun comes out next Tuesday ... however I hope everyone watches next Friday's video... Dr Russ

@@russjones7981 Thank You for all of that . Fascinating. Did you know Roz Sumpter or Lou Van Couvering? They taught me how to shoot. I ended up placing third at Worlds in class B piston and second in State back the day .What 25 do you recommend ..pcp and piston? Thank You

Mustang...watch my video on purchasing refurbished air guns so that you might own more than one... Two exceptions to that guidance would be two regulated air guns that shoot precisioned amount of air for tighter groups ... still in 25 caliber... Air Venturi Avenger ... or Umarex Gauntlet... if money is no object ... then consider any FX or Air Force brand... remember longer barrels are more accurate. Purchase and shoot heavy pellets ... ie.... JSB or JSB Heavy..... then keep us in your air gun info loop.... ps ... I do not know any of the Olympic instructors... wish I did ... I shot a lot in practical competition over the years... swept bowling pins off of tables.... (they represent the shape of a man's organs...as we'll as hostage silhouettes... ) Mustang... also consider one of my videos on Accuracy .... keep us in your loop.

You will have a visit from the ATF pretty soon. The feds have shut down donnyfl.
@russjones64974 ай бұрын
Robert ... the feds didn't shut down Donnyfl because he provided suppressors. He did it on his own due to a concern in another area. Many others provide suppressors today without concern. Dr. Russ
