My parents used to (and still try to) talk to me about how awful the other one is. My mom liked to say that she just thought she would never be happy, which hit hard because I spent a lot of my lower school and high school life trying to find ways to make my parents feel happy. I used to look up ways to help my dad stop drinking. I used to try to find support groups for my mom. But they’d never take my advice. They’d just vent to me. I finally put my foot down and told my parents that I couldn’t deal with it anymore. My mom said, “it’s not fair that I have to deal with this alone.” I looked her dead in the eyes and said, “you don’t have to. You just have to find someone other than your already-messed-up daughter. Reminds me of a family member and their GF who are 7-10 years younger than everyone else of the same generation in the family and they are constantly trying to compete and catch up with the rest of us and then they just complain that they're not getting the things we all have and life is unfair to them. I tell them to stop hurting their own feelings by being 21 and comparing themselves to 30 y/o's but they never listen lol.
