Del, just a note: Although Im not in the field anymore I am a fully qualified Electrical Engineer and Yes lithium batteries are able to produce the Cranking Amps and in almost all cases much more than their same physical sized counterparts but they do lack the capacity, as in Amp Hours, so if you were to leave headlights on with a standard battery and with a lithium battery the lithium would most likely last 1/10th the time (motor off). This is why I never use lithium on my bikes as a courier because the constant start stops would probably only ever give me one shot at starting the bike by the end of a day, I use AGM type batteries and they are usually higher in amp hours and come in at 1/3 less weight than the lead acids.The downfall to lithium batteries is once you run them flat they damage really badly where the AGM will not and will hold their charge for months on end without needing a charge. Lithiums dont like being left at full charge over an extended long period. Also on some bikes you may end up with a run away heat issue as lithiums take more amps heat up and take more viscous cycle, regulators etc on older bikes and even the alternator can cook and damage or worse case the lithiums catch on fire and dissipate all the energy stored in a few seconds pretty horrific and hot.

VlogBiker . Most lithium bike batterie's today has a build in BMS, so no overdrain problems, besides dead.
@Vlogbiker
@Vlogbiker 6 жыл бұрын
yeah true, but if I was going on a remote road trip I'd rather have 10x the capacity rather than the weight difference to an AGM battery and besides it is barely what you would drink to keep hydrated in weight..... I would agree if you do track and every little amount of weight would make a difference but this is a street fighter

I've been catching the build less recently but incredible the number of days and hours you've put into the bike...never mind video production. Though not a quick result it is a reminder that steady effort and quality work will always yield satisfaction. It's looking great Del! Must feel great to come into the garage on days between the build where you can check it out and dream the next steps. In a way it's what we are going for - to finish a project. Sometimes you don't want it to end for the joy it's been. Then it's time to remember the intention you had in starting. You and Penny take care!

Hi Ali, Thank you so much for those kind words, ON average the Post Production is about the same as the pre production work.. 5 hours filming in this build nets about 2 hours of footage over maybe 150 clips... and that can take between 4 and 8 hours to edit and render.. but i dont count that in the build time.. thats just time on the bike only.. You are right, often ill grab a brew and go stand in the garage and stare at the bike searching for the next inspiration.. its a great way to guess your new moves aye.. Thanks so much for your kind support my friend, all the best.. Del.

Hi, (finally took time to change google user name) I recently passed driving license. Motorcycle school next door to mine had 3 on their Honda and they died within 9 months. Might be linked to specific usage but had similar feedback on forums with cruiser bikes...now it may well depend on the alternator and its characteristics. Another point is that I used similar battery on drones (much smaller) and they are sensitive to hot temperatures and do not bear well at all discharge during prolongated non-use periods. To finish I think that chargers have to be specificly compliant with such batteries, I would check twice before wintering it. I do not want to alarm since they have advantages, I never had one myself but I thought to share those thoughts, they worth at least a check. Thanks again and keep us posted, I do learn scores of interesting stuff here!

Good to get real-life feedback! Not sure about LiFePo in comparison to Li-Ion, I hope/guess this does not make a real difference. As mentioned, only real-life feedback I had some doubts about the fact that usage was not adequate, it looks like - VlogBiker's comment - capacity might be an issue. I guess this is easy to control depending on face-value capacity of the battery.

welds are looking nice Del. I got a welder for Xmas which I have not used yet as I can only use it outside and as you know the weather has been crap so far, looking forward using it and learning. one question I want to ask is why didn't you draw out the template and then bend the sides and weld rather than cutting individual pieces then welding them together?
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Matt... Its because its not just regular sheet metal, im using thick 3mm steel plate.. you can't bend it mate.. certainly not sharply enough to make a nice fold.. with plate you have to weld them together individually.. You'll see in the next video that i do bend some to make the fuse box plate, but i had to score it twice with the grinder, and even still the bend was wide and shallow.. more of a targeted curve.. Good luck with your welding mate.. keep practicing, it's just a knack, and once you get it, you'll really enjoy it..! take care and let me know how you get on.. Del.

Nice and beef bro! When I've done mine on my little Jawa, I needed to cut two little tabs out to allow wires to connect to terminals, as I found that the angles the wires bend around the edge were too sharp and could potentially run into a problem later on. Hope you're getting out on the bike, its still raining here. but we're out for some fun with the Collective this weekend what ever the weather. Pip pip.. Del.

Is it just me or are your welds getting better and better? Lovely job. A couple of observations; 1. Battery retaining strap? It looks pretty tight but it might be worth a rubber strap. AFAIK Li-Ion don't do well with vibrations so anything to keep it tight in the tray should help prolong its life. 2. Battery terminal access? Not sure how the loom will work with the new tray but you might need to consider how you are going to access those terminal, especially when it comes to wiring in accessories. Perhaps a couple of cut-outs? Lovely work though Del, and it's great to see the design evolving.

Hi Jonathan, Thanks so much for your kind praise.. id say im proud of maybe 50% of the welds, and maybe 30% of them are up to frame building standard now.. its been great to practice and get all the settings right at last.. With the battery box, ill cut two, half inch deep notches, around each of the back corners of the box to expose the terminals completely, and make sure the cables can tuck neatly against the battery box without rubbing on the edges.. ive still got to make the tray to hold the fuse box, and the ECU (plus all the other relays and wotnot), and once thats all mounted, then yeah, i will used the old Kawasaki rubber strap to hold it down in the box nice and snug.. also im gonna line that box with some thin foam or rubber to cushion it a bit too... Thanks for all your kind support mate.. im a few videos ahead in real time. and i know you;re really gonna like it once its all mounted.. its so small and compact its gonna look just brutal....Muah ha ha.. !!

Thinking outloud...would that battery have enough 'guts' to turn over my Victory Highball, original batt coming up to 6yrs old now and like me showing its age 😉
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
This exact battery wouldn't turn it over no.. its too low ampage, its for a 750cc Jap bike... but the 'correct' Lithium battery would do.. they have the same cranking amps as your factory battery if you buy the right one.. but TBH you dont need to save space or weight on your Victory right?.. so you could just buy a Motobatt instead.. they are a heavy duty battery, have more CCA than your factory battery, and cost about half the price of a Lithium. Wemoto sell them online if you need one buddy.. Oh and BTW... the Highball is the best Victory ever IMHO... great choice.!

Moonfleet41 Thanks for that Del, your right, I have no need to save weight or space, I was looking for options before I ordered one... it has been acting up since I plugged in my optimate but didnt switch it on...battery completely drained and took a long time to bring back to life... Agreed, Highball is a fantastic bike 35k and rides and looks great 😎

(P) youre really enjoying the welding again! Excuse the novice suggestion Del... You've done a massive weight save there with the battery. Would it be worth cutting a disc out of each face of the battery box to preserve even more of that weight loss? It might also make lifting the battery out easier too if ever it got jammed in. Or would it cost you too much in strength if youre using it as a weight bearing piece? Cheers Chris
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris.. yeah, good thought, i could well do that... im not actually bothered about the weight thing, its more a curiosity than anything else... and as it is a load bearing structure, id maybe cut some 1 inch holes.. but going much bigger could weaken the box.. remember as its open at the top, any pull in the back face of it needs the strength to spread through the other 5 faces.. so ill see what else i end up welding into it as strength and if i can spare the metal.. if i can, then i may get the cutter out again... Thanks for your support my friend , its always good to hear from you... D&Px

Nice fabrication as always but I think you could copy what factories do: You 've made a very sturdy bridge already and you could bolt on your tail structure entirely on that. The tail structure could be out of pipes in aluminum or stainless steel, bended to certain degrees and welded together. The boxes for battery and etc you could fabricate them out of abs or pvc sheets to loose more weight. I can't tell whats on your mind yet you didn't show us a sketch or something about the tail. I am just brainstorming...
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Viktor.. good to hear from you.. I like your ideas there.. sounds a lot like the way that Spondon used to make their alloy frames... With this im making the whole thing structural, the battery box is part of the chassis, it will hold my weight and the rest of the tail.. so there is no need for any frame, but it does need to be very strong and solid.. this will allow me to make it really small and hold all the electrics and battery.. then just some small bodywork round it for shape, and a seat on top of that... thank you again for your input, its great to share ideas aye.... take care.. Del.

Do those li-ion batteries get warm when charging like phone batteries? Though about one for a while but would want to put it somewhere with a bit of air flow on my little tracker as the glass mat battery I have is lighter than a lithium and can be sort of positioned on its side. The lithium ones can go anywhere Really, and it's kick start only so no worries of it being a big battery
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
"Your glass mat battery is lighter than a Lithium"?... are you sure mate?.. this weighs less than a pound... any lighter and you'd have to bungee it down so it doesn't float away....lol I read these messages this morning about heat while charging..so poked mine on charge in the garage today... and id say at worst it got mildly warm, but not hot... certainly not enough to need air flow.. plus of course, imagine the amount of heat sync from the steel box drawing the heat away from the battery...? Ill always be modifying this bike on onw way or another.. so i guess if it needs it, i can do it later.. still got so much other stuff to do...

Moonfleet41 i was supposed to say lead acid, I should really spell check my comments lol. Thanks got the reply. May see what the smallest li-ion is I can use. The glass mat isn't much lighter than lead acid, only reason I got it was so I could lay it on its side in the tail unit

Oh really Matthew.. ok, interested to hear about that... what happened?.. I know they need the right battery charger (which i already have in place), and if you fit the wrong battery spec to your bike they can cause charging issues.. but both of those are not faults with the battery, they would be misuse.. so what happend to wombat mate..?
@piper2458
@piper2458 6 жыл бұрын
Potential problem with the battery box. You made the box 'to size', on the assumption that for the rest of the bikes life it will always have a lithium ion battery. Perhaps it would have been prudent to fabricate a box to fit a regular battery, then use shims to brace the smaller lith bat. Just a thought.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Tom.. thought it all through first.. and that was a consideration, the remit was to make a tail unit that was a tiny and compact as possible.. i wanted it to look like there is hardly anything under the seat, and to show off the shock and swingarm.. so part of the reason for the Lithium battery was because of the short height, i could tuck it up out of the way.. so to fabricate the box to take a regular tall battery would kind of defeat the object..!! If for some unknown reason (at this point) i am unable to run a Lithium, (and i cant think of one yet), then i can easily cut out the base of the box, and drop it down an inch so its deeper.. problem solved..! Thanks for your thoughts matey, its great to know that viewers are thinking about the videos and not just watching and turning off... we realyl appreciate that... take care.. Del.

Is it my imagination Del, or do your garage lights go dim when you use the welder? Why are you building a battery box that could with stand a nuclear blast and must weigh 3 kilos, when that funky little battery only weighs something close to nothing. Just looks a bit over engineered to me. But I know little when it comes to such things. Not a criticism just trying to understand mate.👍🏻👍🏻😂

Hi Mike, no worries at all mate.. i mentioned it at the beginning.. im making the battery box a structural part of the tail unit, it actually replaces the frame, welded to the front support because it will support my weight as well as the battery, electrics and all the other bodywork i make the tail from.. its a "Monocoque" design.. meaning that the chassis or frame of the part is formed from the body itself... Making it this way (with no internal frame) will allow me to make it really small and compact, which is the look i want for this bike..but as it is then structural, it needs to be strong and solid.. Hope that makes sense mate... stick with it, once its all built up and supporting all the electrics, you'll see how tiny it is.. and im a few videos head now too.. so the finished item weighs 2 1/2 Kg, so yeah, a bit chunky..but less than the saving of the battery..

Moonfleet41 I’ve been out of the paintball job almost 18 months now mate, they decided I was no longer required! I’m working self employed as a First Aid trainer now, and I was getting into CBT training too, but that’s had to take a back seat lately as there’s just not enough money in bike instructing, or the Bike industry in general, as you yourself have said before! I’ll have to try and get down to see you one of these days, it’d be great to get a guided tour of the famous workshop! Best to you and Penny Pitstop buddy!
