Choice unown could be used as a revenge counter, it's hidden power strength isn't the absolute worst. It at least in theory has something it could do: Psychic STAB Choice Hidden Power to take down a bulky Gengar or something. Ledian can't even do that.

Re: Ledian: considering how many tokusatsu influences are in Pokemon, I honestly think that Ledian was inspired by Tackle from Kamen Rider Stronger, aka Miss Not Officially a Kamen Rider Thanks to When She Was Created (when modern era movies have even recognized that she is really a Rider and has always been without retconning her to make her officially one...). The Showa era tokusatsu bias might have crept in when Ledian was created, on top of Ledian being an early game Bug-type like Beedrill.

I'd like to point out Ledian's attack stat of 35 is especially funny when you remember it's two STABs, bug and flying, were physical in gen 2. Not that it matters because it doesn't learn a single bug or flying type attack in that generation (excluding hidden power, if you're crazy enough to breed a damn ledian for STAB). Literally all normal attacks by levelup. Can't believe I tried to beat gold as a kid with ledian and jumpluff in my party. No wonder my feraligatr looked busted by comparison, half my team couldn't do damage lol.

Beedrill and Butterfree are meant to early game power houses AND teach you about evolution. that said, Butterfree is vastly overpowered since it learns sleep power and psychic moves which are insane in gen 1, then in gen 3 it got Compound Eyes, with sleep powder... it can learn Thief too. Butterfree is insanely good for its utility for the entire game, sure Mega-Beedril was a thing but it went away and made it a powerful glass cannon but it dies so easily.

I tried so incredibly hard to like Spidops. Tarountula is pretty cute, and my first time playing through SV, I was playing with my girlfriend, who takes her time exploring areas the moment we unlock them. We spent so long on route 1 that I actually found a shiny Tarountula by pure chance before we ever made it to the school. But no matter how hard I tried, I just could get Spidops to feel like he was worth having on the team

Vivillon is actually quite a good mon lmao. In the Baltimore Regionals 2024 that just happened, there were two people using Vivillon in the top 32 of the tournament. Both ran the same set. Hurricane, Sleep Powder, Rage Powder, and Protect, Holding the Focus sash with the compound eyes ability. Compound eyes actually makes Hurricane and Sleep Powder 91% accurate and very useful as an attack option, and a viable sleeper. Redirection is also always good so it can make use of. Another detail is that rain was the most used team, so often your opponent would make hurricane better. Vivillon was used as an alternative to Amoongus that could be used against Rillaboom and Amoongus. It was also good against the common Mausape teams.

in vgc i think volbeat isnt actually garbage either, it gets prankster tailwind, tail glow and baton pass, so you can just pass your tail glow to something like gholdengo and set up tailwind, there are some huge problems like murkrow having haze and taunt, and fake out just instantly prevents volbeat from contributing anything but its not straight up trash. cant say the same for sunflora though

chatter is used in gen 4 as well as gen 5, though chatter is mainly used for rng manipulation, more specifically pid frame advancing and is used for shiny hunting. also back in gen 4 and 5 how loud you made chatter actually influenced the damage it dealt

You can't really knock on Bug types though. Beedrill (and Kricketune) evolve at level 10. 395 BST is kinda nutty at level 10. You don't get your mid evolution starter until level 16 and they have about 400 BST... And you have to sit on them until level 36. You don't even evolve route 1 Pokémon like Rattata or Pidgey until level 18/20. Every Mt. Moon, Nugget Bridge, northern cerulean, and gym trainer are sub-20. Beedrill is strong through a quarter of the game. It's an early game Pokémon.

Vivillon is actually preety solid. It has a great movepool and a decent ability that elevates that movepool. Compound eyes combined with Sleep powder and stab hurricane goes kind of crazy. If it can setup with quiver dance it also has decent sweeping potential with Hurricane since its offensive stats are decent Its certainly not the best but its actually far more useable than a decent amount of Gen 6 pokemon. Still in the bottom half though, its not average or above average.

although really its unfair to lump Beedrill into the worst of gen 1 set. Ditto itself is the worst pokemon in gen 1, redeemed not by impostor but by its necessity in breeding. the actual worst Gen 1 is probably Seaking, as the most love it has ever gotten is Swift Swim in gen 3, and megahorn in the same gen, allowing it to peak in NU. even Mega Beedrill earns a proper UU in gen 6 with its mega, as almost every other ZU of Gen 1 has spiked to UU at some point at worst or gotten alternatives. Seaking is just the worst fully evolved watertype of gen 1, and it has no campaign or pvp utility in exception able to give it hope unlike Luvdisk one of the worst fully evolved pokemon ever. Seaking has never received a moveset rework to bring it upto nominal standards either.

The core problem with Mega evolutions is that they didn’t just use it to help buff cool and/or understatted Pokemon. Because meta Pokemon also got megas and it was one per battle, the ones like Beedrill and Audino got left behind. Then you add in the precedent that megas don’t get an additional evolution, until it’s broken, stuff like Absol is left in mediocrity.

Kricketune is better than spidops. You can run a technician fell stinger set with trailblaze to increase speed. Sticky webs and leech life are good options as well. I've seen it sweep but it's definitely niche.
