25:28 Destiny, I work in immigration law. This argument you are debunking is dumb and has always been dumb. If you attempt to gain any type of lawful permanent resident (green card) status in the United States, you need to prove (and this has been in place since before ‘65) that you will not become what’s called in the law a “public charge”, otherwise they straight up wont let you in to the country (at least not permanently). It’s actually a rather convoluted and arcane process where you have to show that you will have your needs met at above 125% of the federal poverty line. Obviously, as an immigrant who has no authorization to work and no (legitimate) social security number (and if you use a fake SSN and are caught thats considered fraud which could seriously affect your eligibility to ever immigrate to the US) you cannot support yourself, you need a sponsor, this can theoretically be anyone but for most people its the person who petitions for them to come here. If that person’s income cannot be proven sufficient on its own to sufficiently support the immigrant at 125% of the federal poverty line, you need a another sponsor, and potentially another until you meet the threshold. This sponsorship is actually a very serious obligation, if the sponsor(s) fail(s) to support this person, the federal government can actually hold them liable because they have to sign whats called an Affidavit of Support (I-864).

@F.W. That’s very much not what I’m saying. My point is that if you want to LEGALLY immigrate to the US, you have to show you will not become a public charge (in most instances). If you cross the southern border between ports of entry AND are not caught by immigration officials, this does not apply to you. Those people typically work under the table for cash or work using fake SSNs. You cannot apply for ANY welfare benefits without an SSN. If you use the fake SSN to get welfare benefits, even if its in your name, that is fraud, and welfare fraud which is a federal crimes and is a crime in all 50 states. If you land yourself in a criminal case where you’re charged with fraud/welfare fraud, you will immediately get on ICEs radar and if you aren’t already, you will land yourself in removal proceedings. If you’re convicted and proven guilty, you will only have a small chance to defend yourself. There is only one benefit that you can apply for to protect yourself from imminent deportation (because of your criminal record), withholding of removal. In withholding cases you have to show that it is more likely than not that you would persecuted if you were to return to your home country, and not just persecuted, but persecuted on account of a particular protected ground, like if you were to he executed for being gay in Iran or something along those lines but 99.9999% of people that would make it this far lose and are ordered deported to their home country. So the claim that illegal immigrants are drawing on the welfare system is just patently false.
@TomTomTom87
@TomTomTom87 2 жыл бұрын
@@FifteenCharms If you really work in immigration law, then you would know that your own claims here are not accurate. First off, there are over a million illegal immigrants who are now "dreamers" and receive all those benefits. In addition, "Chain Migration" allows one family member to sponsor up to six other family members. Unless that initial person is extremely wealthy (doubtful), then there is no way they can meet the "125% above poverty line" requirement you mentioned. And, all illegal immigrants have to do is have an anchor baby and then their family instantly qualifies for government assistance.
@FifteenCharms
@FifteenCharms 2 жыл бұрын
@@TomTomTom87 If you’re referring to “dreamers” as DACA recipients (DAPA is vacated so you can’t really consider that) and the benefits of the DACA program remain extremely narrow and are currently actively enjoined such that there are no new applicants being allowed into the program. DACA is specifically designed for childhood arrivals as is in the name. A simple google search would show your own claim about how many DACA recipients there are is completely inaccurate (there are about 600-700,000 not over a million). The claim that they all receive those benefits is also just plainly untrue. Most of them are still quite young (under 30) and don’t have the demonstrated need necessary to get medicaid or food stamps. All DACA gets you is an SSN and work authorization. They still have to separately apply for those benefits. It is by no means common knowledge in immigrant communities on how to apply for things like Food Stamps or Medicaid. While it is true that they can apply for those benefits there is no guarantee they will be accepted and receive them. If their income is high enough, they will be flatly denied and the state government requests your tax returns when you are applying for these benefits. You can also just be denied as a discretionary matter (any criminal record). As to your “chain migration” comment it just bespeaks a fundamental misunderstanding of just how family-based immigration works. Your claim that they can sponsor up to six other family members is true but as I mentioned above a failure to meet the financial obligation can lead to serious civil and potentially criminal liability. You also forget that these applications have an extremely long processing time in which USCIS or the DOS examines the finances and other sponsorship obligations of the sponsor and make a determination as to the necessity of a joint sponsor to meet the public charge ground of inadmissibility. It also seems like you don’t understand just how long of a line the visa bulletin is, especially for high chargeability countries. The only family members that don’t have a decades long wait for visa availability are children under 21, spouses and parents of US citizens and lawful permanent residents. Unless the sponsor/petitioner in question has more than 4 children under 21 that are not US Citizens the scenario of welfare exploitation you are envisioning just does not exist in reality.

United States was 20% black up until the early 1900s and the overwhelming majority of them would have worked on farms/plantations in the mid-1860s when the Homestead Act started. Many of them continued farming after the Civil War and were taken advantage of via share cropping by former plantation owners. Lincoln did have a "40 acres and Mule" plan as a form of reparations which had the potential to be on par with the Homestead Act. If anything ig you could break things into smaller groups and say centrist dems were doing this to target the left and prevent primary challenges but in a way that ultimately hurts them in general elections.

Large scale immigration to the US definitely happened before WW1 and WW2. The 1800's were actually when a lot of the Non British and French settlers came to the country. German and Dutch farmers relocated to the American mid-west and south during the earlier part of this century and during the Irish potato famine, begging in 1845, a huge wave of immigration from Ireland occurred, many of which ended up fighting in the civil war for the Union. In the late 1800's a lot of immigrants from the south of Italy made their way over as well and landed on the East Coast. This is about the same time Polish people started arriving in the East and Mid-West in large numbers. By the time WW2 had started there were already a ton of Irish, Italian, Polish, German and Dutch immigrants in the country, many of which were 3rd or 4th generation and didn't even speak their native tongue anymore.

The Kkk groups were certainly not putting as much focus on prosecution of specific European ethnicities as they did towards blacks and other non Europeans. Sure, and that was well & good. Crowder’s point was they came for the right reasons, to work & for freedom, back when there weren’t tons of handouts available willy nilly. Also coming from Europe meant they had a lot of values in common with the early American settlers - hence integration was a natural process (unlike some cultures)
@interstellarlapisthecccp4946

@@robertweekes5783 yeah, just that his point that most European migrants came after WW1 and WW2 was wrong. A lot of European migration outside of the British Isles and France happened in the 1800's. Also, yeah you can characterize the migration during that period as 'for the right reasons' in the sense that people came looking for opportunity and not handouts but that is still true today. Most people that legally emigrate to the US are skilled labourers/educated or they are bringing money into the US economy. It's really only illegal immigrants which don't have to pass this process or the family members of those that are already here legally.

Destiny contradict himself a lot in the first 15 minutes. First he claims that the left and right haven’t moved more left and right but that populism has rotted minds. He draws multiple parallels between Trump and Sanders in an effort to show how they are similar in policy and aim which efforts to show that the real division is extreme populism rather than the left and right moving further from center. However Destiny then proceeds to contradict himself at numerous points by referring to the “extreme left” and “extreme right” with specific reference to Sanders and Trump respectively. You just spent your entire effort noting that neither were extremely left or right and that both were populist, only to immediately walk that back by referring to these figures as extremes in a left/right dipole. Frankly this makes no sense and I think even Destiny on some level knows that left and right populism are entirely different and that populism isn’t the real issue. There’s likely no more populist a figure than Joe Rogan, but right and left populism are entirely different beasts and that’s why a figure like Rogan will make discernments such as allowing Sanders on their platform but not Trump. Right wing populism is nearly an oxymoron at the offset, as actual populist policies are dialectically opposed to right wing policy on most economic fronts. A “right wing populist” is therefore just a mouthpiece for populist rhetoric that ultimately serves right wing causes in the culture war while reinforcing institutionalism at every other (more meaningful) level.
@mattreigada3745
@mattreigada3745 2 жыл бұрын
@William Snow That conclusion doesn't follow from the premise. In terms of policy, populism and the right wing have virtually no overlap as they contradict each other on most values. The same is not true of left wing policy. Public option healthcare? Affordable higher education? Regulation of corporate overreach? All populist and all left wing. Right wing populism is fundamentally castrated because while right wingers love to screech about evil corporations like large tech companies, they also refuse any form of regulation because "SOCIALISM REEEEE!!!"

The characterisation of Populism at (12:45) was pretty poor IMO. There are legitimate concerns with the power structures of modern Western society. From the mass surveillance states exposed by the likes of Snowden, to the large Corps maintaining the status quo through media control, misinformation and political lobbying. All while the working class see massive transfers of wealth to the wealthiest in society, while witnessing a degradation of their own standard of living. Waving off those concerns as unfounded or misinformed and that "they follow their favourite KZbinr" is an infantile a characterisation as it can get. Similarly to characterise the establishment candidates as altruistic, studiers of political theory & data is just patently false. There are power structures and agendas at play here. We don't need to be lunatic QAnon followers to state that. There's a reason why many feel apathetic & disengaged from big party politics and it isn't because they're all just brainlessly following their favourite KZbinr like they're the Pied Piper.

I'll say something... The strength of the US as an immigration destination, yes, is propaganda. But the idealism as a destination was based entirely on the fact that the working culture of those third world immigrants was comforted by the culture, as Destiny says, of "swim or sink". No one immigrates for welfare, unless they are refugees, most of the immigration is based on that relationship of "High profit in the US system" and "having the work culture of those born in the third world" But, the irony of the situation is that... That relationship is being destroyed. And that's because of the rising cost of living in the US. Every immigrant knows that if you want to emigrate to be comfortable, you must go to Europe, if you want to have money and work, emigrate to the US.

Destiny doesn't know what he is talking about. He could have done a simple google search and provided the correct information. Illegal immigrants may be eligible for a handful of benefits that are deemed necessary to protect life or guarantee safety in dire situations, such as emergency Medicaid, access to treatment in hospital emergency rooms, or access to healthcare and nutrition programs under the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Children here illegally have access to the public school system. In 2014, 63 percent of households headed by a non-citizen reported that they used at least one welfare program, compared to 35 percent of native-headed households. Compared to native households, non-citizen households have much higher use of food programs (45 percent vs. 21 percent for natives) and Medicaid (50 percent vs. 23 percent for natives). Including the EITC, 31 percent of non-citizen-headed households receive cash welfare, compared to 19 percent of native households. If the EITC is not included, then cash receipt by non-citizen households is slightly lower than natives (6 percent vs. 8 percent). How can they do both? The woman applies for welfare and the guy takes up three jobs. They lie about how much money they make and dependent's they have, if they actually do get a job taxes are taken out from, and when it comes time to file taxes they bail or get a different ID.

It's simple, white people gave women voting rights. Now women focus on their careers instead of having kids. We have to flood the country with immigration because otherwise social security would go bankrupt. If you don't want white people to become a minority you must eliminate women's rights and female empowerment so they go back to the kitchen have a kids once again. Look at any fertility rate from any western country that has empowered women, the fertility rate is below replacement. Female empowerment is a terrible idea and it will lead to our demise.

Black and Brown people do tend to be pretty socially conservative outside of the issues around race. If Republicans just bit the bullet around equality and fair immigration they’d probably find that they agree more with them than the Democrats. You might see a huge swing to the right if race and fair legal immigration policy weren’t basically non-starter issues, like if we had solved those issues, for many minority communities. They tend to be more Christian than white people and more open to religious doctrine dictating policy, they tend to be more favorable to increasing jobs than increasing social safety nets, they tend to be more okay with pro-life positions. Although less so now than in the past, but it’s still pretty close to 50/50… not even close to the. super high like almost 90% they have traditionally voted Democrat would lead to believe on that issue. Like, they’re much less aligned with the democrats than their voting patterns would indicate, it’s just that Republican rhetoric shows them that they hate them, that’s the biggest reason they don’t vote for them. It would totally change the landscape of politics if R’s didn’t cling so desperately to racist policy.

I think they were saying companies want less high skilled labor because its more expensive. And there are a lot of people who work jobs they are over qualified for but make more money than others at that role because they have more qualifications i.e degrees and experience. And people usually would rather pay more for someone over qualified for skill jobs than less for someone under qualified. Kind of like how you’ll pay more for a skilled tattoo artist rather than one who just started. Yes, its the same tattoo but one will likely be higher quality.

The only problem I see, is the American way of thinking. Because American definition are such, that any interracial activity will pretty much by definition mean the end of a "white" majority. So the entire basis of the discussion is pretty much based in racism. Even supposed left wing people argue on this basis. The entire discussion and way of thinking is based on racist thought. And because that's the case, the only solutions will also be racist and/or divisive. You guys should really stop your weird racial essentialism and stop looking at everything through the lens of 'race'. It's weird and disturbing.

Lots of historically incorrect information in Chowder’s immigration talk. Irish Immigrants were seen a toxic, poor, alcoholics and were forced to work in poor industrial plants during the industrial revolution in 1800/1900s due to their desperation and lack of workplace opportunities. Poorly underpaid and lots of work place accidents either killed or severely disabled them. Italians were facing under an economic downfall because of the newly united Italian government left the south of Italy (specifically Sicily) hung to dry. Southern Italians also had mafia wars forcing them to flee. Because of Italians darker Mediterranean completion they were called “ Guineas” and “N*gg*rs”. They were also stereotyped as lazy criminals. Immigrants have historically been treated like shit. They were not ever welcomed in the US. The reason “recess” was created in the US was to separate children of immigrant family as long as possible to assimilate them into American culture. Lunch was also used to assimilate them into American foods.

This is low-effort revisionism; "people back then weren't as progressive as I'd like, so factual reality doesn't matter"! There were issues with integration (which led to "stereotypes") in every major wave of immigration. We had fewer regulations back then which is why there were child labor/workplace safety issues and the Italians who fled were oftentimes _literal mafia criminals_ themselves who were involved in Sicilian gang wars, which is why their rivals wanted them dead in the first place-the U.S. was just the most convenient escape route. All of these people either ended up integrating after several generations (whether they liked it or not), or they went back. The modern context is the first time in U.S. history that integration as a concept has been considered a negative thing (because it's xenophobic to expect someone to learn the native language/culture!), and this has been a major casual factor re: the immigration debate. Literally no other country on earth is as liberal with immigration as the USA. You act like people treating immigrants rudely is on par with the shoa, but *literally every other country* has far stricter legal AND social requirements if you decide to move there (and, unlike in the U.S., _illegally_ moving there is simply not an option).
