I feel like it was criminal how 600's just got cammed to death and over race readied. They used to be a good sized road bike before the daftness. It comes to a point where if you want more power you're better off with a larger engine yet still they made them more and more rev-happy year after year. Fingers crossed this kicks off a new trend of longer stroke, less track focussed middleweights. They could call them sportsbikes...

What do you mean? When do you feel like things were at the correct state ?
@siraff4461
@siraff4461 3 жыл бұрын
@@Fee.1 I would say somewhere in the mid 80's-mid 90's. Since then actual gains have been poor but power gains have been high. The engines aren't being made better overall - just tuned harder for more rpm and higher top end power.
@Fee.1
@Fee.1 3 жыл бұрын
@@siraff4461 how do you define actual gains ?
@siraff4461
@siraff4461 3 жыл бұрын
@@Fee.1 You see that attitude is the exact problem. Numbers on paper are the easy way to say something is better because it makes more power everywhere. The problem comes when you don't need or want that more power everywhere or it makes things like throttle pick up, low rpm/power requirement and such worse. Even the chassis attitude of the bike - people used to use things like cbr600's as sport - tourers but the later ones are basically track bikes with lights. Don't get me wrong - there is a place for that and if you want a nice, vicious bike its great. Trouble is for most road riding it makes for an overall worse experience and it makes me wish they would just make a road version which has smoother throttle pick up, suspension tuned for bumps and corners rather than billiard board smooth tracks only and a torque/gearing curve which allows you to use more of the bike all the time without needing 12,000rpm and at least 60mph in 1st gear to do it. Twins became popular for a reason - more of their torque on tap from lower down and while they make less top end power most road riders don't miss it as they don't ride at the redline anyway. This is also why triple's are getting popular but take a minute to think - one of the most popular engines at the moment is the Yamaha triple in the MT-09. It makes as near as makes no difference the same power as an early Fireblade which also had a big torque curve and was the best selling bike for a while. Screaming 600's making similar power just aren't selling.

First and foremost the OP is correct but i think the main reason why and especially in the states for the 600s dying is cost. Plain and simple I’m not buying a 16k R6 when i can get a 1000 for a few more bucks, nevermind the fact the 1000s are getting most of the love & R&D, after 10 years the 600s are stuck in 2010 while we got engines making 200whp stock So from a performance perspective nevermind used sales the 600s are dead

Hopefully this starts a new trend of actual sports bikes. Most things on offer these days (in all classes) are either track bikes with numberplates or sports tourers. Real, usable sports bikes seemed to die out a long time ago - late 90's for 600's and early-mid 2000's for litre bikes. I don't think the power level makes all that much difference. Its more the set up and I think this is why nakeds have become so popular.

Although as mentioned before, you're probably moving the bike in to a prohibitive price range with those upgrades so I doubt a 660 Factory would be as well equiped as the RSV4. My brain was telling Honda but my heart told me Aprilia RS660 so I bought one... After doing first 300 kms I got first "check engine" light. That was quick fix with via the throttle calibration. Then I did 1st inspection and after software upgrade cruise control didn't work anymore. Then at 1600 km it literally died in the middle of the street. I was able to start it later but with limited power and "check engine". Exhaust valves have to be replaced. It has been at the shop for the last 4 weeks and I have no idea when I will have it fixed and back. 10.500 EUR is a lot of coins for such a nightmare reliability. If I would choose again, I would go for Honda.

@@marsarmory6236 to update you on my story that I commented 11 months ago. It took 4,5 months to deliver the parts from Aprilia and get my bike fixed last year. I lost all the season on my RS660 but Aprilia made kept me riding on 2-wheels letting me use their Tuono660 as long as my bike was at the shop. When my bike was finally delivered I got additional 2 years of Aprilia warranty. This season I am having no issues and enjoying every single mile I make on this bike. So if it keeps like this I will be very happy owner of this bike and never go back to Honda. However these bikes have issues, among all the people in my local RS660/Tuono660 community over 50% of them had issues like engine needed to be replaces, all kinds of leaks, cam tensioner problems, valve problems... something to consider you your Aprilia dealer is 2h away.

I like your reviews...they're always informative and entertaining. And I don't disagree with your conclusions here...I've not ridden any of these bikes. But just a couple of points I can talk about: first, yes all bikes can go the same speed on the roads...technically they can all go 70mph in the UK, but it's daft to think that they do. Also, it's not the speed, it's the acceleration that is the key...that's where the excitement is. And these bikes won't compete with litre sports bikes in that regard so its disingenuos to infer that they do . Secondly - you discount the Duc Supersport; I had a Supersport S and it was a fantastic all rounder...quick, agile, and amazingly comfortable on a tour down to southern Italy. My current bike is an S1000RR, and if Ducati made a Supersport with 50 more bhp I'd swap in an instant. So to discount it against this competition is wrong in my opinion.

I cannot speak of the RS660, but I have a 2015 Shiver 750. I took it on track days, later on I upgraded to an MV F3 675 for trackdays and my father started riding trackdays on the Shiver. The only issue there has ever been with the shiver was a side stand sensor that stopped working. It arrived in like 4 days after I ordered it online. Otherwise has been great. Regarding the MV also zero problems (I have done around 800km on the road and one year of trackdays). Parts that I needed (because of a lowside on track) came in around 12 days during the first covid lockdowns, so seems pretty ok to me as well. The MV and the Aprilia might be a bit more expensive than the competition but if you take them to a track they can be used as is no problems. I see everyone with japanese bikes immediately going for different rear sets, because they scrape too soon, and they upgrade all sorts of other things that you dont have to upgrade with a bike like the Aprilia or the MV. They are very capable out of the box.

The Aprilia looks great in theory but beyond the test ride, what about reliability, availability of parts and dealer support. After getting bitten by the KTM 790 (great bike... if it actually worked for more than 5 minutes straight), these things would definitely make me think twice before buying a bike just off the back of a great test ride. Although this looks like a great bike in isolation, unfortunately, Aprilia have fallen very short of the mark in these departments historically but if they raised their game, I would be very interested.

I bought a 2018 shiver900 for 7800€ + around 150€ extended warranty (Aprilia warranty). After two years and about 20k km I had one problem. The electric throttle was faulty. They replaced it without any hazzle. Other then that nothing wrong about it. Still enjoy the bike... Could have a few horses more up top.... But well I guess euro4 had not allowed for it... But yes, take a look where your dealers are and what reputation they got... Best bike wont be much fun if the next dealer is an big wide A hole... Things can go wrong on any bike...

I recently just bought the naked CB650R it’s a wonderful bike for daily and I do feel the lack of sportiness when I push the bike a little harder. Is it worth for me to get the rs660 as an additional bike for the weekend or are they still too close?

A bike with the same power but doesn't rev is hardly going to feel sportier. Plus the Aprilia still has high bars, not sporty clip-ons. Get a proper sports bike if you want something sporty.

I paid that for a monster 1100S back in 2009. I suppose that’s the price of money printing. Noticed that most people now seem to prefer a PCP deal, they never own it outright.

Yup .. ya gotta compare it to what else is available brand new in the same £10-£10.5K bracket .... MT09 SP, 890 Duke R, Street Triple RS .. sure they are all naked but they also all come with higher quality suspension and brakes and a fair bit more torque and bhp. If bang for buck is what ya class as value for money then the RS660 loses out to Yamaha, KTM and Triumph 🤷‍♂️
@TheTinheadUK
@TheTinheadUK 3 жыл бұрын
@@MotoGoato slightly disagree. Figures wise it probably doesn't stack up. But you ride one and by God you'll realise how good they are. I reckon with a better rear shock it would piss all over all them bikes you've just mentioned on the roads. It's light and the electronics on them are something else. Overkill if anything. But I've ridden a street triple rs and 890 Duke and the Rs660 would be my choice any day of the week.
@MotoGoato
@MotoGoato 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheTinheadUK Can't say I agree with that at all ... the Aprilia is hugely lacking in torque compared to the others ... the little 660 only makes 50 ftlb .... the 890R makes 80 ftlb ... and they weigh the same. I'm fairly certain that fancy electronics (which they all have now - 6 axis IMU, multiple ride modes, multi step TC, switchable ABS etc etc) is not going to make up for a 30 ftlb deficit.

RS 660 must be a good road bike, but for me there is no replacement for displacement. I love the big force of the 1290 SuperDuke at low revs on the road 👌 Big dose of pleasure at every little twist of the thottle. And the comfortable riding position to make the ride fatigue free.

I find it quite inconceivable that manufacturers aren't bringing Supersport 600's into the the UK any more, I guess the market has changed over the last few years, the UK use to be the biggest buyer of Sports bikes in the world, now it seems it's all adventure bikes, I'm guessing Ewan and Charlie may have had an influence on that. Having owned pretty much most of the big Sports Bikes over the last 20+ years, I suppose I can see why, 200bhp+ bikes are pretty irrelevant on the UK roads now, too many pot holes, too many speed camera's... blah, blah... etc,etc. Currently I'm riding around on a 20 year old FireBlade, which tbh, is powerful enough to have fun on, on the crappy roads we have here in the UK, but I have to say the RS660 does look interesting, perhaps I should get a demo on one in the new year, which will probably lead to me spending money.... ;-(

I feel like this would be a great comparison if money was not a factor, or at least the basis of the video would make more sense. The price differences are just too great. Think I’d take the aprillia if It was a gift option but common sense would point toward to the Honda. Could get a whole set of riding gear, quick shifter install etc for difference in price. And still get most of the same bike. Similar power numbers, and sexy inline 4 . Although 660 has the weight advantage too .
