Update; One week on. Started of doing them as static holds just to get used to the position. Could reach the position both sides but doing continuing rep's was a mess. Day 3, I realised that as I was lifting a foot my core was collapsing as I was focusing on the moving leg. This, not only being a weaker stance, means your hip is lower and reduces the space to bring your leg through...Eureka! Once I focused on keeping the hip/butt tight, my leg went through. In a very short time I'm getting a little lower now in my goblet squat progression. My hips feel really good to. Someone has opened a window around my hip joint and let some fresh air in. Genius in it's simplicity and vice versa. Many, many (for me, immeasurable) thanks.

How about the variation where you slowly bring the knee in as far forwards as possible, and hold it there for 3 seconds (5 if you want to make it even harder) then step back and switch legs. This one is killer on the abs. Or just ring the knee all the way in as far as possible and hold there for 60 seconds. Now you have a new killer ab exercise that also works the back of the arms, shoulders and chest.

As a beat up ex college football player in his early 50's with one knee surgery in the books, I see Mark do some of this stuff and I amazed at his flexibility and general functional strength. As we age, these things get harder to work on. I do the outside lunge as a hip opener pre-workout and I can't get my foot anywhere near my hand. Guess it something else to focus and work on. Thanks to Mark I have shifted from doing sandbag work to kettle bell and I am trying to get some of this functional strength back. Keep up the good work Mark, you are a great teacher and break this stuff down into logical steps.
